This was such a great find in the HafenCity district of Hamburg. We originally were looking for a German restaurant. I know this sounds odd, but we couldn't find one on Overseas Blvd. What we did find were some very unique tapas type restaurants of Thai and Indian nationalities. We selected Cardamom for its innovative menu items. It turned out to be a great decision.
We were greeted right away and seated at a prime booth table at a window overlooking their outdoor patio. First of all, I have to tell you about the elegant interior décor. It felt like a fine dining atmosphere, yet it was totally unpretentious & comfortable. I love how they've made it so welcoming.
The menu is divided into categories that make it easy to read no matter what language is spoken. We cheated by looking at the English menu that's posted near the entrance. I wanted something light. I was immediately drawn to the "Small Plates" side of the menu. The description of the Grilled Malabar Scallops sounded enticing even though I'm not usually a fan of scallops. I just had to try it. I loved everything about it. The presentation and the combination of flavors and textures really made this dish a winner. I'd never had Malabar sauce and worried that it would be too spicy. Our waiter assured us it would be fine. He was right. It was so tasty with the orange caviar, fried curry leaves, coconut, and green banana chips.
My husband was so happy with his Chicken Biryani. They made it spicy for him. He kept commenting on the long grain rice and the saffron. I tasted a little of it, and it was so full of flavor. The raita that was served with it was perfect with the garlic naan. Although, I actually needed it to cool down the spice after tasting his rice dish.
They make specialty drinks & cocktails. They actually have a full bar. The Cardamom Lemonade was presented like a mojito. It was very refreshing & non-alcoholic. It was perfect! I'd go back again in a heartbeat. This location at the Westfield Center in HafenCity is their second one. The original location is in Hohe Bleichen. Don't pass this one up when in HafenCity. read more
