It gets absolutely chock-a-block, but full of friendly people who all just want to have a good time, and a few drinks with the rugby. Other than during these days, there is plenty to keep you going. A skittle alley, a pool table, darts, sky sports on the television, karaoke... what else could you really want? AGAIN, it's a Brains pub. The bar staff are really friendly and there's a pretty good community spirit which comes from the mingling of locals and students. They do also serve food, though I have never eaten here.

The Crwys is a popular local pub that sits on the edge of Cathays and Roath, and gets particularly…read moreheaving when there's a rugby match on (with plenty of big screen TVs). it also attracts quite a few on their regular quiz nights, and you see quite a few diners in there, too. It's divided into different areas, one of which is raised a bit and more geared towards people who are eating. Most of the customers seem to be mainly local residents and a few groups of students. To find it, walk to the crossroads between Woodville Road and Crwys Road and it's on one of the corners. In fact 'Crwys' actually means 'cross' or 'crucifix' in Welsh, and its position on the crossroads could well explains the pub's name - although of course the road itself also has the same Crwys name, so perhaps there's something else behind the meaning. This pub does a 'Famous Five' menu for £3.85 from Monday to Friday, but I've yet to find out exactly what this involves. Hopefully some other Cathays or Roathside Yelpers will enlighten us!

A genuinely historic pub serving real ale and food - with a real fire in winter…read more The Old Swan Inn sits in the old centre of the ancient town of Llantwit Major, across the narrow street from the 15th Century town hall. The pub building may be almost as old - it is thought to have been built as a substantial house in the 16th century, although it is not clear when it became a pub. Records show that in the 1650s the owner was allowed to mint his own tokens due to a shortage of coinage - usually a sign of a pub or other business. Anyway, it has now been a pub for at least 200 years, and feels like it: the stone-built exterior is fairly plain, with a low door giving on to a small, cosy room, with another room (with the bar) off to the right. The interiors are exactly what you would expect: flagstone floors, stone walls, traditional dark wood furniture, and low beamed ceilings. There is an attractive beer garden outside for use in the summer, as well. The pub is known for its real ale, and has three or four on at any time - usually local or interesting small breweries, which makes for a nice change. They serve food as well - roasts on Sundays, with a slightly more adventurous menu during the week. The food is fine, though not outstanding, but service was prompt and very friendly - as were the bar staff. On my visit, there was a roaring fire in the main dining area. The main downer is that it does get very busy, and is worth booking a table if you want to eat. The crowd a mixture of locals (coming to drink) and well-heeled Vale types coming to eat. There's no car parking at the pub, (the streets are far too narrow for that) but there is a municipal car park over the road, just behind the town hall.

The food was excellent along with the service, the bar staff were engaging and professional which added to the welcoming ambience. Located right across from Cardiff Castle well worth a visit.

Here is a bit of history the name is taken from the Mascot of the Royal 41st regiment of Wales. They carried a live goat on the Russian front line in the Crimean War. The goat survived the War and was introduced to Queen Victoria back in England. Originally simply called the Goat, the pub was renamed the Bluebell in 1813, and finally the Goat Major in 1995. To this day when the Royal Regiment of Wales names a new goat as its mascot they get several column inches dedicated to them in the Welsh press. I've never eaten here - nor would I want to as it strikes me a strictly drinking pub with lots of real ales on the menu and wall to wall dark wood panelling. Wednesday is Welsh night by the way and apparently the pub offers a range of Goat Major memorabilia - I can't say I'd noticed.

Even though the pub was dark and dingy with a low ceiling, it was still well-cleaned and didn't smell like musk. You could tell the employees here took care of the place well. Even if you prefer something lighter, there are a small amount of seats near the window with a lot of light coming in so it does cater to a variety of tastes. ~ Variety: There were plenty of great ales here that my friends enjoyed. I had a whiskey in coke and it was well made at a fair price too. My server was very friendly and personable, which added to the home-y feel of this pub. --- I can't fault Ye Olde Murenger house. If you're into something more quiet, this is the place for you. Even if it wasn't my own personal cup of tea, there is definitely a place for a pub like this. Back in the 1300s, it was where local legal cases were heard. It was built after a violent attack on the court at Caerphilly Castle in 1316, when rebels led by Llywelyn Bren stormed the area. We both had Fish & Chips (Hand-battered cod served with proper chips, crushed peas and char-grilled lemon), which was good. Very friendly staff!

They are both great over spill pubs for rugby internationals and they both attempt to accommodate the burgeoning drinking population come international rugby days. I have had food at The Cayo and it was passable if you are enjoying your time their but can't be bothered to go elsewhere for a special meal. So match days its a fun happy welcome all. Week days it tends to be a different animal with quite a cliquey regular crowd - or that was my feel. Not that the staff change attitudes they remain friendly whatever the day.

Selling real ales with good cheap food and a warm welcome, they can't really do much wrong by me. A fiver for a freshly made sandwich and a pint at lunch time is perfect. It may look a bit like an old man's pub, and maybe the crowd is slightly older but you aren't made to feel like an outsider and the staff are usually quite chatty. Its also got a nice outside space which made me late back to work on many occasions and a Pub Quiz most Sunday's. Upstairs they have a Bed and Breakfast, and while I've never stayed it would be a great choice for proximity to the Cricket grounds and the rest of town.
