Especially with Cardiff Council's new responsibility to parking fines. Parking in Cardiff can be very costly if you do not adhere to road markings etc and even if you do, the car parks can charge quite a pretty penny depending when and where you are parking. For this reason, why not simply park here and ride the bus. It's only £3.00 to park at this facility which has ample spaces free throughout the day and then you can ride the bus into town for free. It doesn't really take that much longer and there is a bus every 15 minutes so you never have to wait too long before the next bus. The busses are all very new looking and this service is in operation 7 days a week. Monday to Friday the services start at 7am and on weekends the first bus is at 9am. The last services from the city centre are at 8:30am Monday to Friday, 7pm on Saturdays and 5:30pm on Sundays. If this ties in with your plans to visit Cardiff then it really makes more sense to use the park and ride as you would probably spend more than £3.00 in petrol whilst sitting in traffic and if you consider that, along with the parking fees, it makes it excellent value for money for the sake of a 20 minute bus ride.

For a long time you had to kind of fend for yourself here, but now at rush hour they actually have people helping out and employees and what not. It's literally right in the middle of a development of housing, and surrounded by businesses and whatnot which is pretty cool. In fact when you pull up here you will notice that a little shopping center is right next to it - although you have to kind of cross a bridge and walk back down to it. But it's good for your cheap shopping if you need it. They've also made some colourful admissions to some of the buildings here. It's very convenient for anyone working or studying at the University, which surrounds the station, or for those living in Cathays, as it offers a good alternative to a taxi if you want to get into town quickly without the walk - particularly if you have heavy bags to carry.

The Pontprennau busses are the most popular and busiest of busses, which I use to get from town and Albany road to Penylan and back. They have a ticket office where you can buy such monthly and weekly tickets and other tickets for things. From the bus station the Pontprennau busses do not travel from any more as they go by John Lewis, near to the NatWest bank in town centre, by the Capital building. It is right by the train station and near to the VUE Cinema, and plenty of shops and cafes. The Taxi's tend to wait around outside the train station. I was really impressed with the guy who dealt with me, the breadth of his knowledge seemed endless. Every new bit of information he delivered in his quietly enthusiastic manner, increasingly made me want to take that National Express bus whenever he told me to. I was sold! The only thing is that when we got to the price, it was only about a pound less than the train. Unfortunately, I am one of many people who can't read on buses, but I can on trains. So despite the level of service (which, in anybodies money, was exceptional), and the fact that it was marginally cheaper, I opted to hop on the train instead. I do prefer them to coaches!

It was about £12 return which was booked a couple of days in advance online. Long story short, I though I lost my wallet in London, cancelled my card, found my wallet again, explained the situation to them and was given a new price of £25 to get home to Cardiff. Online the price was the same, but as I'd cancelled my card, I couldn't actually book it. I thought charging the higher price was a little unfair but couldn't really complain too much after a sleepless night in Victoria Station. The trip there was fine and more comfortable than the Megabus and only slightly more expensive. The whole system of taking your printout into the Cardiff office, where they give you a boarding pass to carry the short walk to the bus is absolute insanity, as I'm sure the conductor letting people on is just as capable of reading a printout. I queued for a good 15 minutes to get that pointless boarding pass too. Ah well on the whole I can't really complain. They run a decent service, the staff in the Cardiff office are efficient but a little wooden and impolite and they got me from A to B alive, in one piece and in good time for a fair price. On the way there anyway....

If you are anything like me then you can't always be sure of your plans until closer to the time and therefore you cannot know if you are going to be travelling until you know what your plans are. For this reason you can't always get an awesome deal on a rail ticket and paying the usual price can be highly costly. This is a budget service and the price is reflected in the quality, the services can get quite packed but at the end of the day, it's a bus, it will still get you where you want to go ultimately. Last time I caught a Megabus I was travelling to London an instead of it costing me over £50 one-way it cost me under £20 for an open return. I always book in on the earliest service of the day for a few reasons. Firstly, there are fewer people on the coach so it is quieter which leads me to my next point. Less people means more space, more space means more comfort which means I can stretch out and get a couple of hours sleep then wake up (here comes the third point), shortly before my destination and it's still pretty early on in the day. I was on the coach at 6am and we got to London well before 10am. If you are willing to get up early and not fussy about travelling conditions, this is an ingenious method of travelling low-cost.

On the London to Cardiff route - did I mention there is air-con, free wifi and plug sockets on the double decker buses. Only bad things - the bus toilets but then again I have the same issues with train and plane toilet so yeah not anything anyone can really change.

There's no ticket barrier here, so you can hop on the train without paying, though it is probably best to catch eye-contact with the conductor at some point during the trip into town because there are barriers in both Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street which you won't be able to get through without a ticket. The train conductor has a fancy box that produces the tickets that accepts cards nowadays so he's unlikely to accept any form of excuse for not being able to purchase one.

Cardiff Bus has no interest in accurate timetabling for customer, and is only interested in average times regardless of how that affects driver behaviour in skipping stops - the stats look good. I was informed that their advice (though not written anywhere) is to expect it 5 minutes earlier. If only their buses all had a 5 minute waiting time between them. On time is on time. Late is late. Early is early. To fob me off with an excuse of it's not a timing point' indicates the level to which the customer is reduced to less important than statistics. It shows where their priorities lie. Getting really tired ofsuch poor service across the board with nothing being done due to some piss-poor excuse. This won't change anything either, but at least you know now not to rely on them and give yourself a wide margin for their error. Cardiff should be embarrassed by the association.
