Having been in another facility where her care fell short of her needs, I searched the local area to find a facility that I thought could provide the care she needed. That led me to Poet's Walk which has turned out to be the right choice. From the moment that my family and I toured the Poet's Walk facility, seeing the staff at work with the patients, I was left with a feeling that they knew what they were doing and the level of care that my wife needed would be available. The staff works well with each other; each residence is assigned to a specific Care Partner. They assist each other as necessary for the proper care of each resident. In watching the care partners at work, most really show care for the residence. The building was thoughtfully designed. There are two U-shaped wings for the resident's rooms with a dining room for each wing. Each wing is connected to a central area that is called the Main Street. From the Main Street area there is an outside courtyard that allows the residents to enjoy being outside on nice days, surrounded and protected by the surrounding building. My wife and I often sit outside in the courtyard and enjoy being outside among the flowers, many of which are taken care of by the residence that have that ability. The Main Street area allows the residents to gather and enjoy the many programs that are designed for their abilities and pleasure. On my daily visits to my wife, I often watch them play games of different types and see the enjoyment they get from the entertainment often provided. Although my wife is unable to participate, she does enjoy watching the activities. My wife and I eat together daily at lunch. I really enjoy feeding her and look forward to our time together. She eats breakfast and dinner with the assistance of a care partner. The food is good and might be considered excellent for this type of facility. It has improved considerably over the past few months. Organization in the dining room has gotten better but patients is required by all as the staff must assist the residence to get to the dining rooms and then sort out the correct type of food for each resident. This all takes time sometimes causing a wait to eat. Poet's Walk is well managed. I see and talk to the different section directors, almost on a daily basis. They are always open to suggestions and strive to find a better way to do things, evidenced by the changes that have take place, always to the better. Is Poet's Walk perfect? But when we drove up to Culpeper Baptist Retirement, we just had a feeling this would be the right place. It is surrounded by acres and acres of beautiful land...and has a beautiful driveway with ample parking (not a ton of spaces, but there are never too many cars in the front). We met with Rose and Tammy and immediately my uncle felt at ease with them. They were forthright and easy to talk to. My uncle has been with them for two months and, so far, everything they said about how they operate has been true. They are easy to reach and they don't hesitate to contact me with any issues my uncle may be having including any time he visits the doctor. For someone who lives in another state, it gives me great comfort that I can call and reach someone at any time and that they, too, call me consistently to give me updates. The people who work there have all been kind and all seem to work together well. My Uncle has enjoyed the varied menu of food offered at meal times (he loves not having to cook). And there are PLENTY of activities offered to the folks who stay there. There is more to say...but more than anything, we feel they are a place of integrity and they treat their clients well. He experienced "transfer trauma" which is common and could become angry and aggressive, which is also common for Alzheimer's patients. Their response was to add medications and keep adding them until he was in a chemical straight jacket. This included the use of benzodiazepines. I was terribly concerned, especially when the prescribing nurse practitioner proved uncooperative in meeting with us. I set up a virtual meeting with his neurologist during which he was unable to open his eyes he was so drugged. She took him off drugs or lowered the dosage and he came back to life. So did his unruly behavior so they kicked us out. Staff is under trained but doing their level best. The leadership is not looking to care but to manage their patients.

However, most if not all of the staff is very caring. Advocating for your loved ones is a must as it is possible the staff might be too overwhelmed to keep up. When I asked if someone could help change my dad's shirt as it had not been changed in three days (there was a food stain on it), I was assured it would be changed that evening. Every day after, he was in a clean shirt when I arrived. Someone needing significant care who cannot self advocate might not be able to have their needs met due to the staff's workload. They have unfortunately taken TVs out of resident's rooms. Not sure why -- maybe to encourage social interaction? Bummer for anyone who might be bed bound. Activities staff is very kind and fun. Always smells clean and the courtyard out front when you walk in is very lovely.

This place is amazing!…read more We needed to move my father into an assisted living facility when his physical and mental health made it hard for my mother to care for him alone at home. A typical nursing home would not have provided the best fit in terms of a living environment for him. My mother had a company help find my dad Golden Years and More. My mom toured other similar facilities but this one stood out from the rest. It wasn't the cheapest or most expensive place, but the "right" place. They also came to my mom's home to assess my dad's condition to make sure he was the right fit for their facility too. There is a family that lives here and cares for up to eight patients. They currently have four, I believe. The family is medically trained and three to four people are there to assist residents 24-7. They cook meals, wash laundry, assist with bathing, provide activities. This family has truly found their calling! When my father needs assistance in the middle of the night, someone is right there for him. At home with my mom he was getting up and falling down - requiring my mom to call the rescue squad to help get him off of the floor. We no longer have that problem. He is cared for by a team - a family! My dad is happy there. He moved in approximately three months ago. My mom is comforted knowing he is there. My sister and I wish he was closer to us but we know he is getting better care than he would at home. His new home is welcoming. I visit weekly and it's always a pleasant visit. Plenty of private parking. Obviously the facility is handicap accessible. Nicely decorated. Private rooms.
