Recently whole sections of the forest had to be cut down but I've been told new trees will be planted. Situated in Newcastle the views from the top of the hills are magnificent....you can see right down to the town and the sea. It costs £5 entrance fee for a car, however we have a yearly pass which is £50, this allows unlimited visits to Tollymore and also Castlewellan and Gosford country parks if I remember correctly. There are several toilet blocks, lots of car parking and usually a chip van and Ice cream van (more so at weekends and holidays). There is also a caravan/camping site which is reasonably priced and who wouldnt enjoy waking up to a view of the Mournes. Definitely worth a visit if you fancy a change from busy shops and towns.

There are plenty of trails around to go walking, running, dog-walking, etc. We probably saw at least 10 people with dogs as we were walking around, and, yes, we wanted to play with all of them. The dogs, not the people. The area is obviously very scenic (it's a forest!), but there are also some cool ruins, lots of bridges, sweet stepping stones, and flowing water throughout. We spent more than a few hours here, I think, and enjoyed every bit of it.

When it is sunny however this place gets very busy, especially by the lake where people don't just picnic - and indeed BBQ - but kayak, fish, walk, cycle, and bring their dogs for a swim. There are plenty of amenities on site or very nearby, such as plenty of parking, clean public bathrooms, a small cafe, and a large shop within easy walking distance. There is also a huge maze for you to try and find your way out of and that alone could take up a good hour. Entrance fee per car is £4.50 - a bargain for a full day's outing. Tip: there are some rubbish bins but not a lot; people tend to take their rubbish with them. The grounds are kept exceptionally clean.

The walk along the estuary which stretches from Swords to Malahide is a haunt for walkers, people that enjoy a quiet day out with promise of a decent coffee in the picturesce village of Malahide. The day that i was there the weather was a wee bit overcast but certainly not too cold to sit on the rocks and watch while my dogs dipped their paws for a while.

This is still a great campsite. The lake, campfires being allowed etc etc…read more But on two occasions our visit has been marred by other campers being extremely loud. On this latest occasion, earlier, they had their own loudhailer to direct the party games they're playing. Now their bass heavy music is so loud two other groups of campers / caravaners just upped and left. We've got earplugs, so will persevere. Other things to note: firewood has gone from a bag being 3 EUR, to the option of a 4 EUR bag or a 5 EUR bag. The wood is pretty great though, for burning. I wouldn't come back again if it was just the two of us. But we will be back when other friends come here... like next week :)

Our tour guide for the North Belfast walk bought us by this lovely park and told us some cool…read morethings about it: - Stephen Rhea (Oscar winning actor of the Crying Game movie) grew up in the house opposite the park. Look for a bright yellow door near shop called 'War on want" and that's his house. - in the early part of the century, if you are rich enough, you could buy an annual key to get into the park - glad it's free now! - this area was supposed to have been ''mistakenly" bombed instead of the ship building harbour during the first blitz but recent archives from Germany revealed that it was deliberate as they didn't want locals to have access to water for fire fighting the next round of blitz attacks. I loved the two lakes - reminded me a wee bit of the Serpentine in London's Hyde Park. It's a gorgeous bit of greenery, very calming and beautiful with the mini-waterfalls. Hiring equipment is also reasonably priced. Perhaps the best activity is hiring a mountain bike from this centre and doing the 10k mountain bike course around the lakes (great fun)!! Great fun day out
