I'd discovered it recently as something that can be made to look pretty despite having no technical art talent whatsoever. The stock is mostly Mont Marte, which one can find in most $2 shops. I don't know whether it's a good quality product or not, but it works for me. And if you're not especially fussy/doing it for money, then what's the harm? Great for beginners, and great for people who want to paint a large canvas like a tardis for a costume.

The front section is an art store that sells discount supplies, and the back section runs introductory and intermediate drawing and painting classes. I have done two series of classes here and both the main teachers - Ignacio and Ben - are enthusiastic and nice guys to boot. I have definately seen an improvement in my drawing/painting whilst I have been a student here as the art direction and instruction is of high quality. The venue itself is not particularly shiny, but it'll do. It's not an interior designer's dream, it's a working art space. It's hard to find decent art classes southside. Hey, not all arty people live northside y'know. Some of us are south of the Yarra. It's even harder to find art classes that also supply all materials. This makes life so much easier. You don't need to lug everything there and back every time, all paper, canvasses and brushes are provided when you rock up to class so it ends up being cost effective. Currently doing Saturday afternoon classes here and plan to continue. It's a nice chilled way to use the creative part of the brain with other like-minded souls.

Locally themed and published books, prints of classical illustrations, postcards, notebooks and other literary themed art are all displayed on dark wood tables and bookshelves. There's a whole shelf of different Alice in Wonderland illustrations on postcards in pigeon holes for $2.50 each, but not everything in the shop is directly associated with Lewis Carrol novel. Small prints of fairy tale stills and tarot deck illustrations go for between $15 and $30 each, it's a good place to stock up on things for your walls that aren't just band posters stripped from poles around Melbourne. Alice & Co also plays host to exhibits from illustrators, readings and book launches, as well as classes in humanities and languages. It's also been known to host puppet theatre. The proprietor is friendly and obliging, and lovers of literature will enjoy the general feel of the place.

The last time i managed to swing past Alice & Co was when they had an exhibition from a much admired photographer Ari Fainchtein. The small space is quaint and cosy but after a while in Alice & Co, it was time to move on, a coffee just around the corner finished off the visual feast. It is a studio space that empowers people to confidently create in a sustainable way. Young teachers share their knowledge of sewing, knitting, screen printing, macrame and stamp carving amongst many other skills. Alongside their workshops, handcrafted tools, supplies and other items are also on offer via their online store. The studio space is run by the gorgeous entrepreneurial Nicola Prested. This morning I took a three hours long workshop in making a macrame plant hanger. I found free parking easily on a Sunday morning. Booking the class was easy via weteachme.com, and if you book with a friend you get a discount. You may think macrame is just about tying knots but it can be quite meditative. It was a small class of five women located in a bright homely space. We were greeted by two friendly faces, hot cuppas of tea, homemade chocolate zucchini cake and anzac biscuits. We learnt to tie a noose (definitely useful in getting out of life imprisonment) and square knots. Our arms hurt from all the tying but we were persistent. Lots of knots later and our bellies full of goodies, we had gorgeous maiden's fern pots sitting on top of our well tied ropes. We even got an instruction sheet to take with us. Hello etsy here I come. :) Definitely coming back for macrame part two.
