What a fantastico restaurant! Very clean and pretty dining room and the staff here are beyond wonderful. So happy and friendly. This meat platter is huge! Supposedly, it serves four but this is what the platter looks like after three very hungry adults ate our fill. The platter also comes with four bowls of weirdly delicious soup made with beans and....I think, hotdogs. Sounds horrible and I normally would push the bowl out of sight but then I tried a bite. It was great. We split the meat platter leftovers and I will have food for every meal for the next 3-4 days. Then the staff found out it was my birthday and brought out a huge tray of sopaillas drizzled with chocolate syrup, chocolate sprinkles, sugar, and whipped cream. Oh my. This is a review for the restaurant, not the store. I went here for the first time. I passed by this place many times but the building didn't look so inviting (to me). But let me tell you I liked the experience. They serve chips and salsa first, like any other Mexican restaurants but the salsa was not the typical one. It was green one and a red sauce and they were both very spicy. I saw something similar in a restaurant in Mexico City before, so it felt more authentic. they have GOOD tacos! I tried the asada tacos and they came with a lot of cilantro, onions and limes (just how I like it) and they were so delicioso! I was sad to see that some things like barbacoa were weekend-only. I feel like Carniceria Guanajuato would be an excellent place to find the individual components to make a great Mexican meal. More than half of the building is a grocery store, with lots of produce, a carniceria (meat counter), Mexican goods and a bakery. But I didn't visit to go shopping to make my own meal. I visited the restaurant portion of the building to sit down and eat. And the food was fine. It's definitely a Midwestern Mexican restaurant that caters to Midwestern tastes, as is evident with the ubiquitous lettuce and sour cream in the burritos (and on almost anything on the menu, as a matter of fact). We got a bean, rice and cheese burrito (BRC burrito), which we had to order off menu. We also got a carnitas burrito, an order of paella, and a cheeseburger. The cheeseburger was all my child. But I should mention: They do have a kids menu with a variety of different foods -- like cheeseburgers and chicken tenders -- for those kids who just don't want Mexican food. It happens with kids sometimes. Anyway, all of our food was fine. But all of our food was also under-seasoned and was quite bland. The only thing that had any real oompf to it was the salsa that came out with our tortilla chips. They give you both a red salsa and a green salsa, and they were both very good. The green one is very spicy! I ended up adding salsa to my burrito, which I guess I should have done from the beginning. The dining room here is huge. It's like cafeteria sized. First of all, how have I not know about this place and I've been in Indianapolis for over 10 years. Everything was perfect. I was extremely full after eating one taco. I ordered one steak taco one chicken taco and one Al Pastor tacos. The El Pastor taco was so delicious. The meat was so tender and it was marinated and you can taste pineapples. It was really really good. I would've just got all 3 tacos like that I know it's gonna be that good. I've been to both the Pike Plz Rd and Oliver Avenue locations, but never dined in at the restaurant until this evening. I'm not sure why I've waited, because I've been missing out! My pastor enchiladas rojas were delicious, though I probably should have used the verde sauce to compliment the pork. I also ordered a "side" of rice and beans that could have easily been an entree in themselves because it was massive. Altogether, the meal was $14 and lasted me 2.5 meals. Fantastic value for the money. It helps if you can speak Spanish when ordering at the restaurant or at the meat counter, but staff are always friendly and polite as we work through any language barriers. The grocery store aisles are always organized and well-stocked. Burrito is the bomb I couldn't finish it even though it was so good Its a lot for one person. They have The best quality meat so juicy and chewing. Awesome, authentic tacos. This place is in a grocery store and it's full service. Today, my son and I were able to walk in and be seated immediately. Our server was very gracious explaining to us our various options. We each ordered: shrimp, beef tongue, AlPastor and Barbacoa. Authentic tacos are served dry (no sauces) they only have cilantro and onions... my favorite of these was the Al Pastor. Pork marinated in pineapple and an aromatic Chile sauce. This place is an absolutely amazing find. If you want authentic and fresh food....go here! The avocado was extremely fresh and abundant. The arroz con Pollo was solid but the fresh corn tortillas was what really made the meal. I also enjoyed some horchado which was creamy and delicious. Oh and make sure to give the tortas a try. Service was friendly/ welcoming and pretty quick! The only thing is when we walked in, we couldn't anyone in the front to seat us. It seemed we went at a very slow time. Either way it wasn't much of a wait as soon as we got someone's attention. Would be helpful to have someone waiting in the front area at all times so when guests do walk in, they're greeted correctly. If you want a to-go order and you're coming in from the grocery store, you need to walk to the back, otherwise you come in the side door (L side when you're facing the building from the parking lot). There will be a counter to order from. I got an American taco with everything and an Asada taco with cilantro and onions. They're super generous on the meat, and it's absolutely delicious. This size small guac is absolutely massive, it's a small takeout container filled. Chips are fresh. Order took maybe five minutes at max. Total was $20. For the quantity of food and the quality?? Nice grocery store on the west side for items that you don't find in your "normal" grocery store. I picked up some churro mix, some piloncillo and a nice little ginger beer. A good place to go for Mexican food. I wouldn't quite say it's authentic. Over the years they've Americanized the food. I'd recommend to bring more seasoning back to the meat. The rice is sometimes over cooked (mushy). They offer a great variety of food. Ex. Tacos, tortas, burritos, sopas, gorditas, huaraches chimichangas carne asada plates and soups like menudo. They have A bunch of different meat options to choose from. Ex. Steak, chicken, tripa, chorizo, tongue, cabeza, carnitas, al pastor, shrimp, fish. They have a good variety of seafood dishes like fish dishes, shrimp cocktail, seafood soups. The alcohol beverages they offer are worth what they charge but beware the drinks are very strong, so mention to them to not put so much alcohol if you are a light drinker. The service is great. They are fast and easy to get ahold of they don't hide behind doors from customers. The languages I know they speak are creole, English, and Spanish. They haven't really changed the design ever since I was a child so about 12 years everything has been the same except the bathroom was updated and commonly cleaned. read more

I was blown away by the meat counter and bakery in the grocery. But we came for early dinner on Sunday. The restaurant in the back was packed with Mexican natives which was a good sign. I really wanted to love it because of the reviews. I selected the steak nachos and my husband ordered the brisket burrito. I also had one of the specialty margaritas. The margarita was good but not cold. In fact it tasted watered down. The brisket in the burrito was very good but the burrito was otherwise bland. My husband struggled with the plastic fork provided to eat the burrito. Finally he had to flag someone down for a real fork. The nachos were almost perfect except the steak was tough. There was very nicely sliced avocado on top. Maybe we just ordered wrong and need to try something else. The meat and seafood platters looked great that other tables ordered. Mexican cuisine at its finest and most authentic! I dropped in for a super late lunch on a whim. Was in the area and remembered that my friend Sigi has been here and given the place a decent review...so I figured, why not? When you enter the store you walk to the far rear left corner to find the restaurant. It's a lot larger space than I imagined and very colorfully decorated. Despite the fact it was 230p, there were several tables of patrons. I took this as a sign the food was good! I was seated promptly, and my waitress arrived in just a couple of minutes. I ordered water to drink as well as one of the daily specials (huevos con verde). Upon being seated I was served with tortilla chips and two different salads, a roja and verde style. They were both very tasty and spicy hot just as I like them! My entree arrived in record time...seriously it took maybe five minutes! The eggs were served with rice, refried beans and corn tortillas. Again, spice level was hot, but I prefer this so it was a non-issue for me. I expected the eggs to be served huevos rancheros style, but they were fried and sort of chopped up in the verde sauce. I enjoyed the dish, despite not being exactly what I expected. CG also offers a full bar with seating, as well as a bar menu at your table, if you're interested. The restaurant is very large and could hold a crowd if necessary. My waitress was very efficient and friendly (spoke English as well, so we had no communication issues). Carniceria Guanajuato, or for short, la Guanajuato, has become a self imposed colossal chain of supermarkets/restaurants boasting of colorful foods, murals, pillars, and people. It is now a giant staple in the community and has a few other locations sprinkled throughout central Indy. The supermarket lines are agonizingly long during peak times and have 0 sense of direction sometimes yet it always seems busy. Not bad Guanajuato! Countless aisles of merchandise from household items to produce. They now have an app for savings, which is a great tool to see implemented. Most of the staff tends to have Spanish as their first (sometimes only) language, but there is always plenty of employees so I'm sure anyone could find their way around if needed. The restaurant itself is colorful and large, no detail was spared, meticulously crafted tables from wood, chandeliers, high ceilings, but nothing overdone. Some places tend to look like the colorwheel exploded all over. On the weekends the buzz and chatter of busy servers and diners is like electricity, both a good and bad thing! They are famous for their humongous "tablitas" large assortments of specialty meats and such, while also having a pretty traditional menu consisting of tacos, burritos, sopes and tortas.
