Fried Okra, Fried Hushpuppies with Cornbread!
Curtis D.

After hearing several locals rave about Caroline's Kitchen and Barbecue, my family and I finally decided to see if the hype was real. As soon as we walked in, the family-style seating made us feel right at home--which was a huge plus for our group, including three growing young men with serious appetites. Being a country boy with a deep appreciation for savory comfort food, I went straight for the Carolina Sampler Platter. For $17.99, the value is unbeatable: 3 wings, two ribs, a half portion of catfish, two homemade chicken strips, and a literal mountain of fries. I also couldn't resist adding the fried okra and hushpuppies to the table. The food was outstanding. The smoked ribs were succulent and fell right off the bone, and the cornmeal batter on the catfish was so crisp it reminded me of my Southern Louisiana grandmother's cooking. Having a variety of sauces--like the Moonshine, Spicy, and Hot and Honey--was the icing on the cake. I left with a full stomach and plenty of leftovers. If you're looking for authentic southern comfort, this is a local gem you can't miss!

Pulled Pork Sandwich with tots, chip, and coleslaw. Fried Catfish with collards, krinkle fries, and cornbread

We have been to Carolina bbq on so many occasions I can't even keep track. Recently tried the fried catfish as well as the pulled pork sandwich. Everything is made to order, so there is a little bit of a wait, but food is brought right out to you. Fish was light and crispy served with tartar sauce. You get to choose what type of sauce you want for the sandwich. There are no bad choices here when it comes to sauces! For the sides, recommend the collards and the tater tots.

If you're into real, smoky barbecue with that classic vinegar-based kick, Carolina Barbeque absolutely delivers. The meats were cooked right and had that deep, smoky flavor. The dining area is spacious and comfortable, which makes it easy to enjoy your meal without feeling cramped. The staff was genuinely nice and helpful. If you appreciate tangy, vinegar-forward sauces and solid barbecue done the right way, Carolina Barbeque is definitely worth checking out!

Ribs , chili and tater salad!!

Hadn't been here in a while but I always remember really liking their ribs and they did not disappoint. Best ribs in Reno/ Sparks, so good that BBQ sauce is totally unnecessary , the dry rub and beautiful smoke ring are sooo tasty!! We had two sides chili and potato salad , chili was tasty, potato salad was a little sweet for my taste but not bad. Service was very good, nice folks down there, not much in the way of atmosphere but i kind of like the simplicity because it reminds me of my youth when most restaurants didn't have 10 tvs in them and you were going there to eat, not to be entertained . In conclusion , i'm giving 5 stars for Carolina as a killer ribs destination, their sausages are also really good , none of the other BBQ joints in the area can touch these ribs , so if you love ribs ..... this is the spot!! Cheers!!

Carolina sampler. This was so so good. I got 3 meals from it

Another amazing trip. We have only eaten the catfish and brisket. On this trip, hubby ordered his usual of fried catfish with fried okra and potato salad. I opted to try the Carolina sampler. It had 1/2 a catfish filet 2 smoked ribs (OMG fall off the bone tender) 3 dry rubbed fried chicken wings (crispy and delicious) 2 huge hand breaded chicken tenders (They are amazing) I opted for potato salad instead of the French fries. Staff here are wonderful, it's always packed with customers. We literally had to park at the end of the street that it's located on as they were so busy. The food comes out hot and fresh and plentiful. GoGetYouSome

So we heard about this place and wanted to try it out glad we did. The parking lot is little small. Slowly starting to warm. But the food is so big! It's kinda like a dinning hall. You order at the window and they bring it out to you. They have sodas and beer and wine in cans. The food was so delicious you can taste the in the meats and the beans and coleslaw is so yummy. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend this place. Cheers

Habanero bbq sauce. A must!

Favorite lunch spot in Sparks. Always great service and awesome food! Old school southern bbq vibe.

The Korean. This is one BIG ass, #sirmixalotapproved sandwich!

Consistently one of the best chicken sandwiches in Reno! I usually get the Korean and it's 1000% Tots are good, but the old barrel style were a gift from the heavens. I know it's the same seasoning, the old ones just hit better. Staff is always great, dining room is cleaned often. We have always left here very, very happy after a team lunch.

Ribs
Chris S.

Amazing. Those were some competition ribs, dry rub was perfect and they were bite off the bone ribs. No tough ribs or gristle. Beans were tasty and had pieces of meat in there with a nice kick. Coleslaw was perfection. Cornbread was excellent southern style with a little bit of sugar but not super sweet. Outstanding overall and truly hands down best bbq in Washoe County. Can't wait to go back

Issa no for me. Let's begin Catfish looks amaze balls and had the perrrrrfect crunch right! Fish was not fresh! Nor was it seasoned! Now it looks seasoned lol yes, but there was zero amount of salt on this fishy fish The rib. Smoked so that's an automatic no for me. It's like there's only smoked here. Adding the sauce made this A LOT BETTER The collards were tolerable. Super duper soft and the flavor was just tolerable The baked beans were disgusting. They tasted like they were seasoned with ketchup and vinegar. Highly upset about that one. Like I threw that completely away Peach cobbler has a lot of dough. Maybe look into adding nutmeg and cinnamon like typical peach cobbler has? Maybe?

We had a combo and the Dixie dog. Dixie dog is a hot link with brisket and slaw. My wife had fried catfish and pulled pork. The mac was bland... always a bummer. Always fast and friendly service here from a good crew. We arrived with only a few other tables eating and it shortly filled up. Whenever I'm in the area here for lunch it competes with the other great spots nearby. Thanks Carolina Kitchen!

Old thick mac and cheese

This place is renowned for its brisket. I have tried it when family members brought it home. I went in for the first time today. The lady got my brisket conbo right, but she messed up my side order of mac and cheese. The wait was short. I got home, and the mac and cheese was not the size I ordered. I ended up with a smaller size of old mac and cheese. It tasted really bad. None of my family liked it, and we couldnt even stomach one bite.

Oh gosh, savory and crispy fish and chips!

We've been wanting to try Carolina Kitchen for months now, and since we were at the vicinity doing errands, well, I'm driving for my husband, as a reward for my labor of love, he treated his meat-lover wife to Carolina Kitchen! It was an old Southern restaurant vibe, and when you are inside you would know that "yes, they are serving good ribs or any grilled meal. I ordered ribs with sides of rice and beans, and Mac and cheese. Since it's dry rub, the skin or top of the meat was a bit hard, but the meat inside was so tender, so it is still a must try. Also, the meat is tasty, there's no need for you to put some bbq sauce. I didn't, but they provided one in case you want to have sauce on your ribs. I do like my rice and beans. I shared my meal with my son, and he ate much of the Mac and cheese, because they tasted better than the other. My husband ordered fish and chips, and oh boy, its batter was so crispy and felt like they use new cooking oil every time. I like the fries too, you can tell that they didn't serve those frozen fries from the grocery. For beverage, we ordered its homemade iced tea and lemonade, they are good. We've been refilling it a few times. They put a world map by the door, and asked you to pin your home country, to see how many diners from other countries who visited the place. I took a photo of the map of my country, the Philippines. I won't be surprised if Filipinos love this restaurant, because we are born meat lovers! I also took a photo of the map of North Korea, because it was interesting that a tourist from a very strict communist country came to visit the place -- or maybe someone pin it just for fun. Anyway, everyone will enjoy the food, whether you are a meatlover or a fish lover, both were great! Next time we dine in, I will try their grilled chicken.

Ask the Community - Carolina Kitchen & Barbeque

Someone mentioned they use tallow to fry their wings, is this true?! If so, wonderful!

Do they have the chicken wing nachos?

Yes, they do. My son says they're great!

Does the restaurant also sell the loaded fries and loaded Mac & cheese like the food truck?

I'm not sure but I would think so , hope this helps 🙂

Is the restaurant still taking to-go or pick-up orders?

As far as I know yes , they are taking orders for curbside pick-up

Do they not have crawfish?

I have never seen it on the menu

What an absolute banger of a find. It's next to impossible to find a good southern biscuit this far…read morewest, but Pine State has it figured out. I tried the McIsley (fried chicken, dill pickles, ground mustard, honey) and nearly passed out from pure bliss. The biscuit is golden brown on the outside while warm and pillowy within. You'll need a fork and knife, but the menagerie of sweet and savory building blocks will come together any which way you deconstruct it. My wife tried The Chatfield (fried chicken, cheddar, bacon, apple butter) and was equally content. The Oregon Marionberry jam was a tart yet sweet customized side, and I much enjoyed the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese to round off the plate. The breading is evenly blasted with seasoning and the tomatoes themselves are plump but not the least bit soggy. Without a doubt though, the service was unmatched. They handled a line going out the front door with class, getting us tables before we even ordered to remove the burden of seat searching and our food getting cold. They checked on the dining area promptly though they didn't have to. The staff's hospitality matches the southern inspo of the food! We sat outside and enjoyed the slight breeze as the heavenly baked aromas of the kitchen wafted outside. Overall, an 11/10 experience. Love biscuits? Run, don't walk!

For context there were multiple areas for parties of 4 and I found that a little annoying. I think what they should have done was sit us at a party of 4 table and move us if there was a party of 4 waiting and only a table for 2 available.

Yes, some of my friends and relations have found it amusing, but since there weren't any locations near my home, it was a fun addon to my itinerary. So, I was inordinately pleased to discover this Cracker Barrel now so close to home! I've enjoyed a visit at this location a handful of times, and since at least a month or two has passed since the last one, decided it was time for a chicken and dumplings dinner. Things started out a little rough, and got rougher. We arrived 30 minutes prior to closing, and waited and waited to catch anyone's attention to seat us. Finally had to interrupt a very lengthy transaction at checkout to ask if they were done seating for dinner. The hostess immediately apologized and got us seated. But then we had to go back and ask if anyone was going to take our order after sitting again unnoticed. The manager came out and took our drink order followed by our long-awaited waiter. The food arrived pretty quickly, but sadly, this was the worst part of the visit. The chicken in the dumplings was so incredibly salty I actually couldn't eat it. I hate returning food, but I had to ask if something could be done. The waiter consulted with the manager, and they brought out a freshly cooked chicken breast made "without any seasonings." This is surprising since I've had bland chicken before, but here there must have been so much salt left in the cooktop, this "unseasoned" version actually came out pretty perfectly seasoned. Three stars instead of two because of loyalty to the brand concept, as well as because of the excellent customer service provided by the hostess and manager. Both did their best to ensure a good experience, and the manager also asked for feedback after the meal. I'm pretty nervous about ordering from here again, but I hope some changes are reflected in the seasoning levels, and that there's a return to the former well-loved recipe.
