Communication was virtually nonexistent. After the initial conversation with Charles, we never spoke to another human being until I picked up our returns from the receptionist -- and this involved a business, a trust, and four separate tax returns. Not once did anyone contact us with questions, explanations, or comments throughout the process. The end result was that we paid more in taxes this year than we have in the previous 35 years combined. If you prefer no communication and want to feel like just another file number, this may be the firm for you. However, if you expect responsiveness, guidance, or even basic interaction, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Keep in mind that any conversation with a staff member will cost you $350 per hour, even for something as simple as correcting a misspelled name , with billing applied accordingly. I told many people about this experience with Carothers and Associates. I am now interviewing new CPA's. Upon telling my story and showing the email correspondences between myself, the office and Charles Carothers, I have been told by multiple people, including other CPA's how absolutely unprofessional they were in this situation. They were literally appalled and not all of the ones I spoke to, but several were completely aware of what the Covered Ca, thresholds are, since so many people in CA are on it and our income directly effects our ability to use that program. A CPA who claims to care as much about their clients as Charles Carothers and his office do, why would they so flippantly disregard my concerens about Andrews lack of Covered Ca knowledge and then act like I am the issue when I have in fact been screwed over and lost my insurance. The fact that he acted like this was my fault, when it was not actually communicated to me that no one in the office had any clue and then what I was worried about actually happened (and it's very serious) is so incredibly shocking to me. As well as the fact that several other CPA's do know this or would communicate that they don't know the thresholds, confirms to me, that I was not asking too much of this office. Honestly, unless you are on no government programs and perhaps are just w2 this office is ok. ANything more complicated than that, these days they can't seem to manage and then slap back with an attitude like it's the clients fault instead of taking any responsibility. I'm so happy that there are other CPA's out there, who really do seem to care about their clients and the clients needs. I learned that if I am not comfortable with someone doing my taxes (as I was not comfortable with Andrew), I shouldn't use those services and find an office that makes me feel comfortable, especially with something as important as my taxes. read more

I started my business last year, with absolutely no prior business experience. I got Carothers and Associates on referral. I have them do my monthly bookkeeping, as well as my yearly taxes. I spoke to Charles on Saturday, and he said he was about to review my taxes and that I could expect to owe about 5k. My husband and I were looking for a good CPA to do our taxes last year, since we just got married in the fall of last year (woop woop) and bought a house (triple woop!). After first contacting Charles I was highly impressed with that fact that he meets his new clients in person at a location of their choice, for us it was at our home after work hours. This was of course a plus, convenient and personal. The day we met he took his time looking over our hard copy tax documents then systematically went over all aspects of our taxes. I originally found Charles Carothers on Yelp, in 2011 before tax season. He initially came to our home and did a consultation and took our tax forms with him and we scheduled a follow up appt. at his office to go over our tax return. He was friendly, courteous and knowledgeable and advised my husband and I what to do with my self employment taxes. We used him again to process our 2012 tax return and were also happy with his services. We then referred my in laws to him. They are seniors and had just moved back to CA and had a lot of questions about there tax situation and he helped them to put there minds at ease and advised them how to handle their tax predicament.
