During our recent hike on the Camino Ingles, our end-of-the-day experience at Our welcoming and kind experience at Casa Avelina - Bar Estanco was perhaps the most memorable and heart warming. We were finishing up Day 4, which was a fairly hard 27.8 km (~17 miles), including lots of elevation and rain. We were supposed to finish up at As Travesas, and then take a cab to our hotel (the really nice Casa Rural Costa da Eqoa).
We weren't quite sure where that was, and before walking too far down in the direction of Bruma, I suggest we stop at the Casa Avelina, especially since were were tired, wet, and a little cranky. As it turned out, this was our As Trevasas stop! It's also the first bar/restaurant we encountered for a least a few hours, so this is a natural place to come in for refreshment and to get your Camino Passport stamp. They actually offered 2, one for the restaurant and another for a nearby chapel (which we missed).
If you read enough postings from Camino-related websites, Casa Avelina comes up frequently and with many compliments. And they're right! That's largely because the woman (and her crew) that run the place treat their customers like royalty. In our case, immediately upon entering she found us a seat, placed stools in front of us to put our feet up, gave us towels to dry off, took our beer orders (which taste really really good after a long day), and offered us bocadillo sandwiches (ham and cheese) cut from a round piece of bread, of which we got to pick the size. She even helped us call the cab to the hotel (both of which she knew personally). That certainly helped a difficult day melt away into happiness and appreciation towards such kind people.
This is a locals place as well, of which we greeted when we first came in. We were one of the early Pilgrim arrivals (as Gayle and I were focused on getting the pilgrimage done for the day, with a few nice stops). The locals knew when it was time to clear out as more Peregrinos arrived and largely filled up the place. And every person received the same amazing treatment, as the laughter of happy hikers in multiple languages filled the room.
As to keep our Camino distance integrity, we took our cab (the same guy) back to Casa Avelina the next morning to start our next segment. And that nice lady was there to send us off. That goodwill stayed with us through Day 5 and beyond. read more
