It's a shame that I didn't get…read moreto spend more time in Cadiz; it was by far one of my favorite cities in Andalucia because the tourism is less commercialized and the city is just less congested overall. Never once did I feel like I was getting ripped off for dinner or had to wait in a long line at the entrance of the museum. Spa Senator, on the other hand, is a different story. I paid approximately 95 euro a night for a single occupancy room; by European standards, Spa Senator is probably a 2 or 3 star hotel (but is advertised on the website as something much fancier - a 4 star hotel). The lobby has a kitschy Andalucian vibe, with faux-arches, a fountain, and azulejos tiling. The furniture and upholstery in my room felt old, but I managed to get a good night's sleep. The room was spacious for European standards and had an (overpriced) minibar and a TV. At least the fan and ventilation system worked - Cadiz in July can be best described as oppressively hot. All of the employees that I interacted with were hospitable and friendly. Hotel Spa Senator's location, however, was perfect for my short visit and the primary reason why I booked this particular hotel. The hotel is about 5-7 minutes away from the Renfe station, which made my arrival and departure hassle-free. Most of the sightseeing (the cathedral, the museum - which I would highly recommend!, and the various oratories) is about a 10 minute walk away. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in the area, so there was no need to partake in the hotel's overpriced breakfast and because Marypaz was having a sale, I may have bought a pair of shoes (oops). Hotel Spa Senator was just right for what I needed - a bed to sleep in and a convenient location for a quick visit.

The hotel was okay…read more But beware, if you are contemplating using the Internet for any reason (including email) while staying here, and want to have access to Wi-Fi, you will get absolutely horrible service. You will be given, if working, free access, such as it is, to Wi-Fi for 48 hours. It works so poorly that you would think you were using the Internet from the old AOL dial up days of 20 years ago. You might was well forget it. You will have access to Wi-Fi, but if you try to open a page, send an email, download something from the web, it might take five minutes or more. It's a total rip off and is inexcusable -- the hotel is obviously trying to save money on the Internet access it provides to guests. This one aspect of the hotel's so called amenities almost ruined my trip. I had brought my laptop with me on my trip to Spain and was counting on getting work done during the nighttime hours while in my hotel room.

The bathroom was smallish and the shower a bit claustrophobic, but the water pressure was forceful. The liquid soap dispenser was full of water, not helpful, and there was no shampoo or conditioner available, so a small bar of soap would have been the only option had we not brought our contingency shower gel with us. The restaurant is 100 meters away on the plaza which is also where we checked-in. Ristorante Italiano Tuscana has an extensive menu of antipasti, pastas, meat dishes, desserts, and a full bar. They have an indoor, air-conditioned dining room and tables outdoors on the plaza. The food was very good, the portions appropriate, and the prices fair. We ate there twice and enjoyed our meals along with their resident dog, Rocco, who was very sweet, lingering near outdoor diners, but not begging or being a nuisance at all. Our dinners, a starter, main and wine/water ran around €50, not bad for good meal for two. The first night we has l'insalata caprese €8 and tortelli 4 formaggi ai burro e salvia €15 for my wife and the lasagna bolognese €10 for me along with a bottle of water with gas and a liter of sangria €12. My lasagna was delicious and HUGE, but my wife's tortelli had not been properly drained, watering down the rich butter and sage sauce, but my wife still enjoyed it. On the subsequent evening, we forewent the starter, my wife ordering the tagliatelli con funghi €10, me the spaghetti carbonara, and sharing the cotoletta alla milanese €12, a bottle of water and two glasses of house red wine. All were very tasty, especially the carbonara which was prepared in the traditional way by adding egg yokes just before serving with plenty o' pepper ... HOOAH! My one complaint...the beds are soooooooo damn hard! It affected how well I could sleep. Am I a weird American because I don't want my bed to feel like plywood?! Regardless, for the money, we really enjoyed our stay here. Jerez, in general, is a fantastic town. So laid-back!! Get to a Bodega and taste some Sherry wines!

The room was clean and tidy, the laundry worked fine (although the washer did take what seemed like forever), and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I cannot say enough about the staff. From the front desk to the fleet of cleaning ladies. Everyone will greet you with a "Hola, Buenas Dias." The housekeepers usually stop by everyday to see if you need anything, even on the weekends. The attention to detail that the staff shows to the hotel is incredible. From wiping the elevators down with stainless steel cleaner, sweeping and mopping the entire stairwell, and wiping down the fake plants in the lobby. They truly make you feel at home here. The little mini mart in the lobby comes through in a pinch as well. Great job Navy Lodge.
