This place FAR surpassed expectations in terms of hotel, service, and blew our minds away with the food and drink. This place is like getting a luxury resort experience but with the familiarity of a family run place where everyone knows you. No one asks for your room number, you don't have to ask for any extras, it's all provided for you.
HOTEL: This place was slightly pricier than a neighboring hotel we wanted, but with a travelocity deal coupon, became slightly cheaper. We later got a call asking if we wanted to upgrade to a nicer room - for anyone else who gets this call : DO IT. The nicer room has a private deck with hammock overlooking the beautiful bay which was once a pirate cove. 2 ceiling fans, air conditioning, a fridge, a safe, a beautiful walk in shower and pleasant LED lighting. The other room is great too - but the deck and view are shared (although there are only 6 rooms total, and hardly anyone else was there).
FOOD: The food was incredible, and is becoming known as the best in town. We actually tried and tried to find better food and kept coming back and being amazed here. Three other guests reported the same thing. They have fresh ingredients delivered multiple times a day, and they get to keep the quality high and cook only for the few guests and visitors each day.
The other review mentioned horribly slow service and overcooked food - which either they completely fixed, or was an anomaly because they were slammed (there were only 1-3 other tables occupied every time we ate here). The service is certainly paced slowly altogether, but that's the natural pace of a place that does a single seating per table each night. We had no delay anytime we asked for anything! Just get some of the amazing appetizers to eat (the BEST ceviche and BEST guacamole/pico de gallo we found anywhere in town) while you wait for the main meal to be cooked.
BREAKFAST: For guests, breakfast is INCLUDED, and it's fantastic. We could not bring ourselves to go anywhere else for breakfast. The omelets are wonderfully flavorful; the huevos rancheros is delicious, and they server fresh fruit and several other things to order as options.
FOOD: For guests, they have food all the time; we would come home and order ceviche and guacamole anytime. Chips were fried fresh; veggies chopped fresh each time. They use more flavorful jalapeños than any of the other places we tried. We asked for fresh young coconut juice, which they don't normally have -they actually sent someone down to get a bunch of huge young coconuts, and then macheted the top off and served them to us with straws!
Also, the prix fixe dinner is an AMAZING BARGAIN for the night, try it at least once. Includes 3 appetizers, a bottle of wine, a cocktail, and an incredible entree. Discounted for guests.
DRINKS: When we first arrived and walked over the rope footbridge, before we were shown to our room, they carried our bags to the reception/bar area, and asked if we'd like margaritas. They are the best margaritas in town. They shared the recipe, but it comes down the the fresh ingredients, high quality liquor, and they take the time to know what they are doing. We had some good margaritas in town, but none this good. Piña Coladas were also excellent, but I only had that once.
ATMOSPHERE: More paradise-like than any place I've ever been. They have a Koi pond (and you can feed the Koi!) adjacent to the beautiful Infinity Pool that looks like it extends out into the gorgeous bay far below. The entire place is a spectacularly gardened terraced tropical paradise, with sweeping views of the bay, city, and ocean. The sound of frogs, crickets, Koi splashing, and other unidentified animals are all around, as well as the occasional vulture(?) call from above as they swoop above the city. You'll see a gecko here and there, and there's a few iguanas that like to lay in the sun with you.
SAFETY: It's pretty remote and far away from the city, so that makes it feel pretty safe. There are very few staff that all know you and seem to be a close and friendly family. There's a small safe in every room (not big enough for laptops).
SERVICE: Incredible. There was always someone looking to help. The only issue we had with the place was that our safe started beeping randomly at night, they replaced it before we asked the next morning! Maids are so efficient and great, and Ricardo at the bar/restaurant was always there, friendly, and helpful. Terry was great when we booked!
WIFI: Free wifi all over with access points in every room and on the deck and bar. it's decently fast for a hotel, but has some latency (I think it's satellite).
The only disadvantages to this place are (1) you will have no good reason to leave, so you might miss out on feeling inclined to hang around the city and beach more (which are also very nice, but not as nice); our bathroom had a slight smell of mold, it could probably use a vent fan.
