Parking is available for guests but keep in mind that spaces are quite tight. Check in was fairly quick and easy. Our room was quite large and included a double queen bed, a couch and large bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and received the approval from our dog, Felix (who has developed an appreciation for 5 star hotels, although this hotel is really more of a 4 star) We ordered room service and it is handled online. Upon ordering, it said that I would receive a confirmation but I didn't. I tried to contact the restaurant but no one picked up. I then contacted the front desk who "transferred" me but disconnected the call. The food was OK. The neighborhood was noisy. It was Friday night and there was an event inside the hotel, as well as in a neighboring building. I was able to close some doors in the hallway, which helped with the noise from the party in the hotel. Breakfast was very impressive. There was a large selection of pastries, fruit, fresh juice, two coffee machines, bacon, sausages, etc. Hot items were available to be ordered. There was also a selection of local specialties that was impressive. The three women who worked in the breakfast area were extraordinarily kind and attentive. Some of the hotel's interior showed the remains of the palace and my husband noted that it would be a lovely spot for a wedding.

We stayed in this branch, in Burgos, and another in San Sebastian, and both were well above average. Clean, good service, good breakfast. This one is apparently a restored palace, so roughly comparable to a Parador, though not quite as elegant, but also not as expensive. Not much English spoken away from the reception desk, possibly because Burgos doesn't get that many English-speaking tourists. But if you're driving up to the Basque region (as we were), Burgos is an excellent choice for a mid-trip stop. Their cathedral is quite spectacular, and worth a visit even if you're not Christian - maybe the best Gothic-style church in the world, now that Notre Dame won't be accessible for awhile. Take the audio tour, which is included in the price of admission.

Most parts and people as I asked for directions, were kind of uninviting. The AC Burgos,is in the part of town you want to be in. It's situated on the tree lined Paseo de Isla which runs along the river, where you can enjoy a stroll, see the Cathedral de Burgos, and walk to the Plaza Mayor, from which a lot of great restaurants are reachable. It's easier to park on the street in Burgos than in other places, though at ~10E for the hotel parking, I thought it was well worth not wasting time looking for a public parking spot. The decor of the hotel business oriented, but was very nice.

The nearby Parador de…read moreSanto Domingo de la Calzada is a bit more luxurious and located right at the Cathedral and the Camino de Santiago. However, we weren't complaining as we had a wonderful time during our stay here. The Parador is located in the former Convent of San Francisco, an easy 800 meter walk to the historical centre of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The Parador itself is located in a former pilgrim hostel and has 3 different and unique segments (the Church, the Museum, and the Hotel). One Tour book mentions that this Parador is a hospitality training venue for the entire chain. Folks were certainly nice here, as Gayle and I not only enjoyed the service, but felt at home and comfortable in their nice Lounge, Bar Area, and Breakfast Room. The room was nice, the bed gave us a great night's sleep, and I particularly enjoyed the view into the Courtyard. Gayle's only "complaint" was that the bathroom was somewhat utilitarian, that the SWAG wasn't as good as this Parador's 4 and 5 Star Cousins, and that she left her pajama bottoms behind. We would both love to come back and retrieve it!
