The only surprisingly nice thing is that it's a lovely family business, the son who runs the place is an intelligent, excellent english speaking (rare here!) guy who has excellent tips about town. The rooms are below average but above "pilgrim standards " , which in our case, is enough.

MUST STAY: If you happen to be in Spain, this place is an absolute must to visit even with a few…read morehour drive. It is just east of the Valladolid area. This area of San Pelayo is where time has stopped. The village has a few tapas bars, a church and the Castillo de Torrelobaton which you can walk through the entire castle with spectacular views of the rolling mountains. The 3 story stone and wood house has a beautiful terraced garden in front with seating to enjoy. The interior is stunning. It has traditional and warm décor highlighting the interior stone walls, wood floors and thick wood ceiling beams. It has charming décor on every inch of this place. The entire common area has a lot of seating around the fireplace as well as dining areas which were all very clean. The tables had fresh white linens and roses with mint leaves on each one. Our room had a double bed and single bed with armoire; sofa, coffee table and seating chair; and full sized bathroom. The beds, pillows, sheets and towels were all in very good quality and were very soft and pleasant smelling. The bathroom was accommodating for 2 people if necessary. Breakfast is included with the room fee. We had hot chocolate, coffee with steamed milk, crepes with fresh raspberry preserves, almond cookies, toasted banquette drizzled with rich olive oil and quality parmesan and prosciutto. The lady of the house speaks Spanish only and runs the entire place and is always pleasant and accommodating. I would highly recommend staying here even if you have to drive several hours. This is one of the most charming, romantic, relaxing and pleasant places to stay. We would have stayed longer if our itinerary allowed. We did not speak Spanish and used google voice translate which was fine for us.

I should start this review by saying that we were introduced to the owners of Casa Zaldierna, Pilli…read moreand Antonio, by a mutual friend who lives in Ezcaray. We went for lunch and ended up staying for three days, such was the quality of the food and the warm welcome we received. We began lunch at around 3--standard in Spain. Before lunch, we chatted at the bar and geeked out on vermouth with some very good Spanish selections from small producers. Lunch itself was focused on seasonal and hyper-local products: Boletus mushrooms (foraged that morning by a guy in the village) lightly sauted in olive oil and garlic; sweet bell peppers (again from a garden in the village) stewed and served with a fresh poached egg. The main course with a massive porterhouse steak (again, local) cooked by Antonio over a wood fire. There is some serious ceremony around the beef at this restaurant. Antonio first brings out the cut--in this case a beautifully-marbled, super thick porterhouse--to present at the table. He then cooks it over a huge, wood-fired grill. It arrived a perfect medium-rare with delicious crust. Memorable. Given Zaldierna's location in the Rioja region, the wine list is good and everyone who works at Casa Zaldierna is very knowledgeable about the producers and vintages and more than able to point you in the right direction.
