Trips to España aren't complete without flying home with a new pair of espadrilles. Casa Hernanz was on my to do list for Madrid. I happily stumbled upon them while on a walking tour with my bff. I was at best, only marginally interested in the tour as the guide wasn't able to hold my attention (Hemingway was right on the money with "I drink to make other people more interesting" as maybe had I had a drink he wouldn't have bored me to pieces within the first 2min) so I spent most of it wandering off and exploring nearby because the entire point of a walking tour is to actually walk while learning fun new things. For instance, I learned where this shop was without directions. I walked right in and there were several people inside but no queue upon my arrival. They have so many options, but being petite I typically rarely if ever wear flats unless they are my tennis shoes. I tried on a few different pairs and sizes since I'm typically a 36 or 37 depending on the style of shoe. A couple color options weren't available in my size but I did find a really nice neutral brown I can pair with plenty. Service was great! My pair cost 25 euro which I felt was extremely reasonable. I only fly with hand luggage which definitely helps limit my spending due to space. Trust me when I say you'll want more than one pair! There's very little I love more than supporting a small buisness with incredible products. The store feels really special, very pleased with my experience. Went back to my favorite shoe store in Spain. Bought three more pairs of espadrilles. I own 6 pairs from here. Service is always great and quick. The shoes seem a little more expensive, but everything has gone up in price. Be realistic - know what type of shoes you would wear, what your price point is, and what you like. If you live in a warm climate these shoes are perfect. The store can be overwhelming because there are alot of options, but please do not waste their time. Don't let the line intimidate you. I waited about 40 min (came at 5:15pm). It was totally worth it! I'm not sure why people have complained about the service. Everyone was very helpful and understanding. Spend the time in line to check out colors and styles to narrow the choices. I didn't feel pressured to rush and tried on a few. The alparagatus planus (basic unisex style) is 7€. Very competitively priced and a great excuse to support a family business! They accept credit cards and there are enough tourists that they can understand some English. Taking pics of the style you want and writing down your size is the fastest. What an amazing store!!! I came here the morning of my flight back to New York to pick up last minute souvenirs and ended up with another pair for myself. I arrived right after the shop opened and I had their undivided attention. Their workers speak minimal English but you can definitely communicate with them. They are so attentive and willing to help that language was really not a barrier. The prices are phenomenal. For the basic espradrilles, it was only 7 eur!!! I paid 12 eur when I was in Barcelona. Boy, did I regret not waiting until Madrid to buy my shoes. They also had more sizes than La Manual Alpargatera in Barcelona as well. All the styles were definitely cheaper. Shoes, glorious shoes! Casa Hernanz is a family-owned shoe store just outside the Plaza Mayor. As others have noted, a line builds up quickly once the store opens, so get there early. Shoes are comfortable, cute, and affordable--my two pairs cost me around $50 USD total. There are dozens of styles to choose from and a rainbow of colors. Beautiful and cheap espadrilles. This is a small shop near Plaza Mayor and usually there is a line outside the shop. There were no lines when we went one evening. There were few people shopping inside but we were not kept waiting. The girl who was helping me spoke a little English and was very patient and helpful. There are rows and rows of shoes displayed in different colors and style with the price written. You can pick the style and color and let them know your size and they will bring you a pair to try. You need to try every pair as they are hand made and may not fit even if they are same size. There is no right or left side to these shoes. They were very patient with me as I tried to decide the colors and styles. They were all very lovely but I did not have much space in my bag so had to make decisions. The classic espadrilles without heels were 7 euros and some fancy ones with little bit of heels were 12 euros. I got about 4-5 pairs and they are so comfortable. I've read about Casa Hernanz on the internet and decided to pay them a visit. I was not disappointed. They have a lot of espadrillas to choose from. This place made the coolest shoes I've ever bought! All their shoes are hand made and look so unique. And their ridiculously cheap! If you don't want to waste hours waiting in line, definitely get there early. We got to the store 15 minutes before it opened and there were already a couple people ahead of us. A quarter after opening there was already a long line. It's definitely a no frills shop. You walk in, they ask the shoe you want and the size, you try it on, you buy it, you walk out. No small talk and no smiling. I would give Casa Hernanz five stars but my shoes ripped after a couple months! I was so sad because everyone loved them! Once I knew I was going to Spain, I HAD to do research on where to buy espadrilles! This was one of the places that popped up in my search as one of the places that you must go to when in Madrid. The New York Times even wrote an article on this place and raved about it. We waited for about 45 minutes in line, but it was totally worth it! There are 3 windows full of shoes next to the front door, so you have lots of time to decide what you want to buy. When you walk in there's a long wooden counter and then one of the guys will ask you what you want. There's a wall of shoes inside and you point to which shoe you want with this wooden stick. I couldn't reach so I had them point for me. I've worn my espadrilles to work and they are not only super cute, but pretty comfy too! Also, the prices were very reasonable considering almost everything was handmade. I paid about 10 euros for flats with the cotton straps. Talk about decision fatigue. Oh my goodness there are TONS of shoe options. They range from $7 to about $80. I went early in the morning so there was no line. There is plenty of employees to help you and they are very patient (thank goodness)! I ended up getting 2 pairs but had an extremely hard time narrowing it down. There are also authentic hand made goods in the shoe store or another separate store next door which has nothing but baskets and other goods made with the signature rope. Casa Hernanz is THE place to buy your espadrilles in Spain. They've been an alpagatería since the 19th century, and it's a family run business, which makes this place even better. Also, everything is handmade, beautiful, and so stylish, especially back in the US! They open from 9 - 1:30 and then 4:30 - 8:30P during the week, so keep that in mind when you want to visit. It's always good to know what sizes you need beforehand because the lines can get crazy, especially around 7. The classic alpargatas are 5 euros here, and they have the most colors - 30+, I believe. When I came, the people were really nice and I, unfortunately for my wallet, ended up buying 7 pairs of shoes from them. But it was so worth it! Oh and they also accept credit cards, which is very handy for bulk shoe purchases. So if you ever want to turn some heads with your new espadrilles, you have to check out Casa Hernanz! Great cheap espadrilles but do not come in here expecting English speakers and friendly service! The service varies greatly on who services you. The first time I went, I had a lady who answered me shortly and was not helpful in finding espadrilles I would like. She was so bad, I left without making a purchase and not wanting to return. The only reason I came back was because my friends really liked how comfortable the espadrilles were. Upon the next visit, I had a younger woman who spoke English (helpful when you don't know all the colors in Spanish) and I found shoes that I liked and could comfortably fit. A word of caution though, they do not hand make these shoes, I presume they get them shipped in from different artisans. The first time I went in, I was a size 34 and the second, a 35. I'm normally a US 6 in flats. My friends and I looked at the bottom of the soles and saw that the espadrilles they bought on each visit were made from different people. If you're looking to buy these as a gift, be very wary of this. read more

We arrived there around noon and the line was quite long with locals and tourist waiting to shop. after around 35 minutes it was our turn we were taken care by a older lady who was efficient but far from friendly but who cares I got some cute shoes for cheap. Now make sure you know exactly what you would like to try on and the color you want it because it expedites you getting out of there faster since the place is so tiny. me and my mom left with our shoes and they are so comfortable. It's pretty famous... there's always a long line, despite the other espadrille shops. Plus they have so many choices.

Shoe shopping at Casa Hernanz is like no other. First, you will see a line snaking out of the small shop. The line to get inside can take up to one hour since they can only assist a few customers at a time. The filthy windows display hundreds of handmade espadrilles. When you get inside the shop you will notice the store is very small with only a few sales people working at the counter. The fit is unique. The size seemed fairly true but you will most likely have to go up one shoe (euro) size unlike most manufactured Spanish espadrilles which you usually have to go up two sizes. They do not have half sizes. The associates say the shoes will stretch. The associates behind a counter have to fetch each pair from the back stockroom as you try to find the perfect fit. Just allow a lot of time and patience. Many shoes featured on the outside displays are not located on the inside displays. Take a photo into the store of the pair and color you desire to show the associate to save a little time. There is a bit of a language barrier. We stumbled upon this place by renting the flat directly above it! We were wondering what the constant lines were for and when we entered the shop we found out it was well worth the wait (prepare to wait between 30-45min). The best thing is the variety (every color and style imaginable) and the prices (adult shoes start at € 6). I would suggest taking photos on your phone of exactly what you want before you walk in (all the shoes are displayed in the window) and be ready with your exact color and European size. The shopkeepers do not speak much English so it is best if you can let them know your shoe size etc in Spanish. Know that you cannot merely drop in- going here is an excursion and be prepared to spend between 1-2 hours on the entire process. But it is WELL worth it. read more

The lines are long and it is difficult to see all the inventory, but it is definitely worth a trip! I bought two wedge espadrilles for very cheap. I'm always getting compliments on them.
