I love seafood and…read moreyou can find it in spades here - it's worth travelling to from the city centre, believe me. Here you can find fish sustainably sourced in the form of mackerel, red mullet, line-caught bass and even sushi as well as the elusive John Dory, my favourite fish, and wild lobster and turbot. Having won an award for Best Food and Drink Outlet from the Manchester Food and Drink Festival, the fish is handpicked and purchased daily, with deliveries coming in two to three times a day. 90% of the fish is wild and the products are seasonal, meaning that you can get freshwater fish and shellfish as well as deli products, poultry and game and even vegetables, strangely enough. The value for money factor is huge here, the decor is clean and cute and it's certainly popular with the locals. Definitely one to travel for.

It doesn't end there - if you don't fancy fish you can also buy organic game and poultry Out of the Blue is a great deli too, selling seasonal vegetables, conserves, seasonings and even coffee and pasta, and the staff are happy to help with cooking and serving suggestions.

There is no other store like this in Liverpool as here you'll find rarer products that you can experiment with. It is particularly popular with students and people from foreign backgrounds. Matta's is a well known Liverpool food stockist, I'm not sure it's really a deli, let's call it a food place because they sell things to do with food. Because we here in Liverpool know so little about food - our traditional meal is not scouse as people will have you believe but Pot Noodle - there are few places like Matta's and certainly none as reasonably priced. Herbs and spices, exotic condiments, preserves, oils and stocks are the main fare of Matta's trade helping scousers to liven up our spam frittas since a while ago and now they have entered the 21st century with an e-commerce website.

Well, yesterday, whilst it rained and thundered, my friend and I chose to venture out on a hunt for something to eat. In the end we picked Salvo's, and I'm really pleased we did. The restaurant itself is extremely pleasant; the space is open, inviting, clean and has some wonderful decoration-including huge prints of the original Salvo himself, along with the chaps who set up the restaurant with him back in the day. The menus have lovely insights into the business, and it's always lovely to see where a place of such high regard comes from, and it's lovely to look at whilst perusing what to eat. The staff were all absolutely fantastic, all fully friendly, and ready to help. Each person that served us made sure everything was perfect, which all goes toward a better experience. To be fair, I should have taken the advice of our waiter, since I insisted on having chips to go with my pot roast beef (yep, being really British there) and he was sure I wouldn't need them. I didn't! I opted for the Pot Roast Beef, which was a huge slow roasted steak, with delicious vegetables -onion, carrots, courgettes, and more. There were also three huge roast potatoes, an amazing gravy, and some incredible sugared bits of fruit -like glacier cherries, or something, which worked incredibly with the dish. The only thing I didn't enjoy so much were the potatoes, since they weren't very crispy, and I'm not a fan of dry food -I should have asked for some extra gravy, to help soak up the spuds. Even so, this is a minor thing. The side dish of veg and chips were also delicious, and my friend's lasagna was a thing to be jealous of, even with a dish of pot roast in front of me! All in all, our bill came to about £40, which was incredibly reasonable considering the quality of what we consumed. I can't wait to go back and try some of the pasta, which is unusual for me, as usually it's the last thing I would want to try. As well as that they've a really fantastic range of Italian beers, so those will be worth going back for as well. Lovely staff, quality food which you can see being made freshly from their open kitchen, and a delicious menu. Those wanting to save cash can always opt for £15 meal deal on a Sunday - two courses! Check them out!

Location: excellent, just removed from the rowdy part of Headingley but near enough to allow you to hit the bars afterwards. Service: Polite, fast and informed. Atmosphere: Relaxed, casual yet lively. Good for date or for group meals. Food: Simple yet somehow the nicest Italian food I've ever had. Everything you would expect, pastas, seafood, chicken. And of course pizzas. Real Neapolitan style pizzas with thin bases, fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, gorgeous toppings and drizzles of oil and seasoning. Drink: Extensive wine menu. The owners love their wine so much they have opened a wine bar upstairs in a tribute to their mother. Sadly, I haven't experienced this yet. Italian factor: Very noticeable. The owners are two Italian-English brothers who execute homage to their heritage perfectly. I know I ended up gushing, but basically, what I'm trying to say is GO. NOW.

Hm, I hate to disrupt the universally glowing reviewing going on here but I don't think I would…read moredesignate Italian Express fine Italian dining, although to be fair I ordered takeaway pizza. The pizza was a medium standard - as others have said they aren't greasy and mine tasted pretty good, probably because it was saturated in garlic but hey, that's one of my favourite flavours. However I'd say it was a little too dense to reach true Italian pizza level status and the menu could do with some more authentic topping options, This is a place I would order from again because I know it will be of a decent standard, but it isn't your local I wouldn't go out of your way to try it. One thing they do which I irresponsibly decided to try is a Nutella and marshmallow calzone. It doesn't quite come off - perhaps because the dough is a little too thick to get the balance of bread to sauce right - but it is thoroughly laudable in concept. Value wise it's not bad: you can get a very big pizza for one for £8-9 and delivery is free after £10.

Wow. Just... wow. Who would have expected that a takeaway establishment peddling fine Italian food…read moreon par with San Carlo would be hiding away in the student accommodation round the back of the Oxford Road universities? Not me I tells ya. But there it is. And for me, this was important. Why? Well, when my parents still lived in the UK we had an Italian place situated in the Lindley Hotel up the road. It was both a restaurant and a takeaway, and I adored it. I'd always find excuses to order from it. Delicious salty goat's cheese and juicy sundried tomatoes on crisp thin pizza bases, supreme pastas, exceptional salads... heck, the only thing it was missing was that beast of dough, the calzone. Well, it's around six years later and I've found its replacement. Italian Express is not to be ignored, I cannot stress this enough. When I first ordered from here I plumped for my old favourite which I used to order from the Parbold takeout... yup, goat's cheese and sundried tomato. Only, this one came with bonuses. Roasted red peppers and mushrooms. And the mushroom haters in your household will have an absolute nightmare. None of your pizza will be stolen because they stick those bad boys right in there under the cheese so they're impossible to pick off. Ree - sult. Oh, and a garlic pizza bread, 10" pizza and a chicken calzone all came to a measly £17 thereabouts. Er, can this place do no wrong? It's genuine, it's fresh, and it feels as if you're eating in a fine Italian restaurant - only you're in your own home, you can cosy up in your PJs and stick 4od on the laptop and no one will judge you. Happy New Year everyone, I've found another for the top five takeouts.
