Arriving back from Iguaza Falls, we decided to risk a very late dinner here without reservations…read more The uber ride dropped us off and a pleasant employee guided us to the location as we were a bit bewildered as to where the flower shop storefront was located. We loved the florist- yes plenty of fresh flowers in the shop, They opened the walk in fridge door and we walked downstairs to the speakeasy amid the dj spinning records. We were seated at a table and a very pleasant server ( who spoke English) dropped of our menus and took our drink orders. My aperol spritz was refreshing and hubby enjoyed his cocktail too. Our preferences for seafood or veggies allowed our server to make recommendations that were amazing. The complimentary sourdough bread was devoured- it had been a long 24 hrs without much food - another story! The crab empanada was large enough to share and was AMAZINGLY yummy. No wonder it is one of the most ordered dishes. Hubby loved his anchovy crostini, the BBQ shrimp - delicious, and we shared the argula salad- also a winner. Not much wait for an Uber back to our Airbnb at 1am- time to prepare for tomorrow's departure. Hope to return in the future!

We had a phenomenal experience at Verne Club last week while visiting Buenos Aires. There are a…read morenumber of "speakeasy" type of bars in BA and they love the secretive concept. But Verne Club was the single most authentic feeling speakeasy type of bar we visited while in BA. It's not hard to get into, and it's not hard to make a reservation. You can do it right from their website. But the bar itself is completely unassuming and if you're not careful you would walk right by it assuming it's a house on a quiet neighborhood street. Not so. Once we walked in we were seated immediately for our reservation. It was a Sunday night and relatively empty at 10pm, but by 11pm the place had filled up to a decent amount. While not every cocktail was perfect (the wine cocktails were a little weird) - they have two special cocktails that are complete slam dunks. The opium old fashioned was one of the best drinks I've ever had (and it was with Jim Beam of all things!) and the Jazmin Blanco was possibly one of the second best drinks I've ever had. Both are amazing. Try them both. The opium old fashioned comes smoking at your table and the inhale experience on your first sip is unforgettable. The food is also very good and the hot dogs were excellent. While my friend and I left around 1am, our husbands stayed on and ended up staying and chatting with Samurai, the owner, after the bar closed for the night. Verne Club was by far one of our most memorable experiences in Buenos Aires and one of our most enjoyable nights. If you're into craft cocktails, and a cool and chill vibe, this is the place for you.

Unfortunately, the drinks didn't quite live up to the hype compared to other cocktail bars we tried that day. White Jasmine ($11,500 ARS): Heraclito London Dry Gin, Cardamom, Lemon Honey, Jasmine Tea (ABV 18.8%). Better than the 1869. You can pick up the flavors, but the lemon honey aftertaste was a bit too strong. 1869 ($12,500 ARS): Havana 7 Rum, Zuelo Torrontés Vinegar, Dates, Pomegranate (ABV 19.6%). Sweet, but the alcohol flavor overpowered everything else. Also, the foam topping was too heavy.

Of course, we had to try their lamb empanada - which, as you'll see, visually pales in comparison to pretty much everything else we had. But, not in flavor - great filling, great dough. 115 pesos. Grilled chorizo, poached egg, french fries tossed with a tasty pesto. What's not to like? The most brunchy thing we had, and, I think, the best thing we had. 360 pesos. Pan-fried sweetbreads, charred corn, all over a potato rosti, and a sort of sweet and sour vegetable medley highlighted by candied carrots with star anise. Although the overall size of the dish was great, we kind of thought the sweetbread component was a bit skimpy for the price. 530 pesos. On to our main courses.... Great rib-eye steak, and a decent portion too (400 gms, just shy of a pound). Maybe a touch short of the medium rare requested, especially in the center near the bone. They don't season their steaks, which is a little odd, and we had to ask for salt, as there wasn't any on the table (a legal thing here in BA - saltshakers only on request). 725 pesos. It's hard to cook a steak as thin as an entraña, or hanger steak, to a correct temperature, but they nailed this one at medium rare. Again, unseasoned. They have an okay chimichurri, but it's made with all dried spices and herbs, better was their excellent salsa criolla. 655 pesos. Good flavors, but slightly disappointing texture on the garrón, a "forearm" of lamb - it just hadn't been braised long enough and was still chewy. Good couscous. 740 pesos. And one of the selection of "casserole" side dishes for the table - roasted cauliflower with lots of cheesy bechamel and a spicy "brava" sauce. 260 pesos. Not a cheap outing, especially adding in a bottle of wine (with a wine list that runs about 70-80% over retail prices, and the cheapest bottle on the list being 620 pesos). But a tasty one, and a place I'd go back to - though a pricey outing, at 1700 pesos apiece with tip, almost $30 each.
