We…read moregot here only 50 minutes before closing, so we had to see it fast, but we would not have missed it for the world. First, the exterior is amazing. Then the interior! Glass and crystal chandeliers. Gorgeous period rooms (carriages on the first floor!) Fabulous paintings- both framed and on the ceilings. Tiles, Vases, Mantel Clocks, Statues, kitchen ware- you name it, you will see it here. If you are familiar with the Decorative Arts Museum and the Romanticismo museum- this is like a combination of those two Madrid museums. It's 5 euros, but free if you have the National Museum Cards for Spain- which can be bought at many of the National Museums of Spain, and which we found to be a good deal, since we love museums. You can take pictures here- but NO flash. We were so happy to be able to take some pictures away to help us remember our experience.

Given the retro vibe of the swooping, skeletal design of the entire layout, I would've guessed it was designed in the middle of the 20th century when the Jetsons ruled the Saturday morning airwaves. Designed by local architect Santiago Calatrava, it was actually built over a 13-year period between 1996 and 2009. We knew the City of Arts & Sciences was a must-visit in Valencia, and we took a local bus to disembark at the most visited component, L'Oceanogràfic (Photo 7). It's Europe's largest aquarium, and by far, we spent most of our time here (review: https://yelp.to/WiK7NyEDnr). Our experience with the other key structures basically consisted of strolling the expansive grounds and appreciating the sophistication of Calatrava's organic design. We walked the length of the science museum, Museu de les Ciències (Photo 2) which was followed by a look at the eye-shaped L'Hemisfèric, which houses a planetarium and an IMAX theatre (Photo 3). On the opposite side of the reflecting pool was El Umbracle, an elevated open-air garden (Photo 10). We ended our urban hike at the striking opera house, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (Photo 9). I really appreciate the cleanliness of the building, the attention to detail within each exhibit, and most notably, the interactive experiences. Each exhibit I visited had multiple interactive opportunities to help engage the audience. Great way to capture the attention of young and old alike; not just walking through looking and reading copious amounts of explanations on the art presented. One star off because some of the exhibits felt disjointed between one another, signage could be better.

There is also a reduced rate of 1€ for retired persons, groups, etc. + An audio guide is available, for a fee, in Spanish, Valencian, English, French, or Italian. + On the main level, there an area with seats that shows a video that gives a brief overview of the Falles Festival and shows the process and detail of how the monuments were created + Ninots, monuments that were saved (chosen by vote of the people) from the fires of the festival are displayed in chronological order, with the older ones on the first floor, and the newer ones on the second floor. + The second floor is accessible via stairs or a small elevator. Definitely worth a visit. You could easily go through the museum in 30 minutes, or more if you take time to take photos of all of the ninots, which are extremely detailed.

Each year during the big festival they vote on the best falle and save part of it and keep it in this museum. It does not take much more than about an hour to walk through this museum.

It seems to be geared for children, but many of the children I saw didn't look entertained. The actual building is beautiful and the grounds are gorgeous. Price for admission is 8 Euros. The museum is ENTIRELY interactive, with exhibits just haphazardly placed throughout. There were a few interesting exhibits, but that's about all I can say. If you only have a short time in Valencia, I recommend the Aquarium- it's incredible

Most modern art to me is like a hot drink on a hot day, it just doesn't make sense to me, but to some, it's just what they love. So I'm going with a three since I know I'm rating it lower due to my own preferences. I found the displays to be limited in selection and it really didn't take long to get through the whole museum. Granted, for the whopping TWO euro entrance fee, it's pretty good. If I were to estimate, I'd say there are about 5-8 exhibitions at any time. So there's something in there worth seeing. There were a few pieces in there where you could definitely see the inspiration or the time period (pieces that reflected influences from Picasso or Andy Warhol). But... yeah. The museum itself is nice, the building in clean and well maintained and fairly well air conditioned. What did confuse me was that I wasn't allowed to take photos from too close, but I'm allowed to take them from further back or panoramic views (according to security). Ummm... did they not notice my zoom lens? So it really doesn't do much to stop someone from taking a picture, but I just don't get why. Sure I understand the no flash thing or even no photos at all... but panoramic or far off photos only? Overall... I'm not a big fan, but if you're in town and you like modern art, why not?

The museum contains the archeological ruins of Valencia which were discovered underground. This was an amazing discovery to be able to see preserved for our viewing. To think these ruins are underneath many of the buildings and streets of Valencia is baffling. I would defnitely stop by and check it out if you are interested in archeology and ruins.
