La Casina del Bosco serves delicious piadines which to North Americans is essentially a freshly made tortilla bread with different toppings. This particular spot is also popular for drinks and has a huge patio for outdoor dining.

I made the right choice of venue. What an absolutely gorgeous outdoor cafe with charming, efficient and totally on the ball staff and the fastest service I've had since arriving in Italy. I even had a few language lessons with the waitstaff who humoured me as I practiced my very beginner Italian on them. The first thing that caught my eye and consequently ordered was piadina alla porchetta. A spectacular choice. The piadina itself was light, slightly toasty, with a nice hint of olive oil but the main attraction was the pig. Delicious, sumptuous, well seasoned porchetta made this dish a massive hit for me. And for just €5 I was suitably impressed. I happily spent a solitary hour here soaking up the atmosphere, sipping on coffee and reflecting on my delicious meal. Thumbs up from me. Next time I'll be trying their gelato desserts too. They looked delicious!

In the summer the place has a lovely outdoor space to eat, however in the winter is when the Nonna Gelsa's is at it's most alluring; with a roaring log burner in the centre of the room that instantly warms you up from the crisp chill of the biting Umbrian wind. The menu is simple and delicious. Antipasti; a selection of home made pasta; a selection of sauces; a wonderful meat menu; amazingly fresh cooked contorni to accompany; a daily updated offering of puddings; then coffee, grappa or vin santo to finish. All in any combination you like. No fuss, no frills, just great food, the best local ingredients, cooked to perfection by Nonna with no mucking about. Oh and its next to a vinyard from which much of the wine comes from. Friendly, welcoming, delicious, great value. This is a place so good, we have returned many times over the years even booking one of our weekend breaks around a Saturday lunch there.

I attended a remarkable harvest dinner which included a simple plate of tagliatelle with butter and white truffles likely never to be exceeded. Have also popped in for a quick lunch served with grace and warmth. Excellent reliable consistent!
