The gnocchi was good, but the least impressive, since it was largely relying on cream for flavor. The spinach didn't really come through. We went with the ribeye, which had a delightful crust yet was still juicy. The mushrooms were a mix of chanterelles, morels, and scored trumpet mushrooms sauted in a lovely wine sauce. We went here for our anniversary dinner, and it was amazing! We saw recommendations of this place on TikTok and in several guides when planning our trip to Carmel, and it definitely exceeded our expectations. Casanova is soaked with history. Charli Chaplins cool lived here until she passed and the property was purchased and remodeled by the current owners. Not much to look at from the outside it is full of romantic charm inside. There is a large tree growing right in the middle of the restaurant making the establishment mostly open air. Casanova has the largest wine selection in Carmel and also has a sommelier. Unfortunately the wine cellar was having work done so we could not see it. We reserved Van Gogh's Table. Yes it is the table Van Gogh had meals at during his last days. No it's not just a room named after Van Gogh. The table was acquired in 2002 and can be reserved. Eating at the table was far more rewarding than looking at a piece of art or walking through a historical building. Service was fast and courteous we had no complaints. Our meal was excellent. Food is very good but doesn't have the traditional vibe that it has had in the past. Prices have risen, portions have shrunk and menu is smaller. I've been coming here the same time every year for the past 3 years, the dinner before my Monterey Half Marathon. It's always been such a treat to myself. For Father's Day, I decided to take my husband for the 1st time for Father's Day. I asked for a spicy margarita and the waiter said, "The kitchen has not peppers." I asked, "If instead of the sides that come with my steak, could I just get a naked simple salad... just a bunch of leaves?" He said, "They do not do substitutions." I told him that they've done it before. I told him I was just there last November. I asked the waitress. She said she'd ask the chef. When she came back, she said it's one of their normal salads that are premade and if that was ok. I said, "yes. Thank you." There was no charge. The waitress made me feel like she wanted to help and actually did. Our waiter last night said that if I want a salad, I'd have to order salad for the regular salad price. Then, he said they found peppers in the kitchen and could make my margarita spicy. Admittedly, initially, I was shocked the kitchen didn't have any peppers, a Michelin Guide restaurant. This waiter was terrible and acted like he did not want to help. I ordered brocollini instead bc it was cheaper than having to order an additional salad. The waiter apologized and asked if I read the no substitution rule on the menu... Really? The waiter said we have never done substitutions before. This surprised me bc they did for me last November. My toddler is sitting next to me. I don't have the luxury or want to read an entire menu. He said the chef would come out to talk to me. I was find with that in fact wanted that to happen. It honestly pains me to write this because my husband and I have loved Casanova for years. We first dined here in 2023 and have talked about it ever since; so much so that we chose to come back to celebrate our anniversary. That's why this experience felt so disappointing. We were especially excited for the bone marrow, but within the first few bites, we found a hair in the dish. I tried to brush it off, but moments later, we found another long hair tangled in the food. At that point, I felt completely unsettled and honestly couldn't continue eating it. When we let our waitress know, she apologized, but then left the dish sitting on our table for the next 15 minutes while we just sat there, uncomfortable and unsure of what to do. There was no offer to replace it, no reassurance, no real attempt to fix the situation. Eventually, she came back and simply asked if we were done and took it away. What made it worse was that we then had to awkwardly ask for the dish to be remade ourselves--something that, in our experience, should have been immediately offered. For a restaurant at this price point, the lack of care in handling something so off-putting was honestly shocking. My husband and I genuinely think that if we had not said anything, this issue would not have been resolved and we would have ended up paying for a dish that was inedible due to poor preparation. Thankfully, the refired dish and the rest of the meal (spinach gnocchi, prime rib, cannelloni, and rice pudding) were delicious, and the atmosphere is still as warm and charming as we remembered. But the way this situation was handled completely overshadowed what should have been a special anniversary dinner. Mistakes happen. The way they're handled is what defines the experience. This was the most horrible experience I have ever had at any restaurant, ever. If you look at my other reviews, you'll see that I rarely give any place 1 or 2 stars because I am always at least moderately satisfied. First of all, we didn't even eat, we left shortly after being seated. We had this reservation for over a month now, and we had specifically requested indoor seating. When we arrived, they let us know that they wouldn't be able to accommodate that request. I fully understand that requesting indoor seating does not guarantee that we will get it. HOWEVER, we came about 10 minutes early, and once we were seated and realized how cold the breeze was despite the heaters, we kindly asked our server if we could get a table inside, and that we were fine with waiting however long. He went to speak to his manager and came back to let us know that we would not be able to get a table inside due to it being fully booked out. I asked if the inside was fully booked by the people who requested indoor seating. He responded yes.... Did we not also request indoor seating? Why are other parties being prioritized in their requests when we also had a reservation since 5 weeks prior and we even said we were willing to wait however long? Our reservation was at 7:45, we arrived at 7:35, and the restaurant closes at 9:30. What do you mean you can't give us a table inside for the entire remaining 2 hours of the night? We were going to just suck it up and eat here, but this is one of the most expensive restaurants in Carmel, and we could not justify spending $150+ per person given the circumstances. I would have felt much better about the whole situation if they had been even just a little apologetic or at least explained the reason for their inability/unwillingness to accommodate our 5 week old request in a way that actually made logical sense, but their attitude clearly showed they could not care less. Even when I went to the front to kindly let them know we would be leaving (even if I was upset, because I did not want to complain since we'd be leaving anyway), there was ZERO regard for the way they practically drove away their guests, and not even a fake apology. Just an "ok" from the lady at the front. I didn't place the highest expectations in the first place since I had never dined in the area before, but I expected way more from a supposedly renowned restaurant. The Dover sole was also underwhelming, as it was bland and desperately needed seasoning. I was going to ask for a recommendation but after that, I chose the Fairybird 95. I thought it was just okay. We started with the bread service & mushrooms. The mushrooms were the star of the show, but moreso the oil dipped in the bread. My partner got the cannelloli which he really enjoyed, and I got the gnocchi. The gnocchi to me, after seeing so many raving reviews, was just okay. To me if you've had Italian food in New York, I don't think this will be a stand out place. I think you moreso go here because it is beautiful and very vibey. They also had a very extensive wine list, which is great if you partake. The cocktail menu was quite short, maybe seven drinks total. We ended our dinner with tiramisu which I do think was delicious. This was recommended by our server & I'm thankful he did. I had made the reservation a month prior letting them know i was celebrating my fiancés birthday, everything was great until the end when mentioned to the server if they could bring desert at the end with a candle, to wish her/sing happy birthday. Told the server what desert i wanted, so that i could surprise her. Towards the end i noticed the desert never came, so i asked for the bill to see if that was my cue. When I got the bill, I noticed the dessert was not on there so I called the server over and I had to ask him again for dessert right in front of my fiancé which was no longer a surprise, it happens. When he brought the dessert, it came in a brown paper to-go box. I will admit I was a little upset so I mentioned to him that I had asked for the dessert with a candle because it was her birthday, and he asked me if he wanted me to put on a plate. For the amount of money spent i would expect a bit more attention to detail from the server and not feel rushed for me to leave, which took the magic away from this place almost instantly. We had the Fromager D'affonoise (cheese plate), lobster bisque, crab cake, gnocchi, cappelletti (with kale and chanterelles), cannelloni, chocolate mousse, apple pie/tart, and tiramisu. I've never had anything like the cappelletti, but if returning I'm not sure I'd re-order it (I have had the cannelloni several times). I didn't realize that patio reservations include the front patio, I thought it was just for the courtyard. Next time I'll be sure to reserve inside in the fall/winter. It took me a good long while to warm up outside, and I was cold even with heaters and blankets for quite a while. That was the only negative.
