Often, pistachio goods have almond flavoring, which overpowers the entire dish. This cake slice looked appetizing and moist. The cake texture itself is incredible, but there was an overwhelming flavor of almond and soap. I don't know how that happened, but I got a few bites in before I had to throw the whole thing away. I was able to try like five different samples of their cakes via the TooGoodToGo app. It's nice that they participate in that app! I have to agree that the cakes here taste more sugary/sweet than the actual flavor of the cake. Example: the German chocolate cake, I mostly taste the sugar and don't taste the chocolate or coconut hardly. That said, everyone has their own preferences, mine happen to be for a less sweet cake with more of a flavor profile. I've bought off of "to good to go" on more than one occasion. I can't speak for other reviewers, but I've never had bad cake or bad service here. It's day old cake. From a local patisserie. Cassandra is a lovely lady who makes lovely cakes. I've only had one issue ever because I happened to come by while they were at lunch, and that's on me for not planning on coming by earlier. The cakes are always soft and delicious even though they're technically not fresh, but being stale should be expected when purposefully purchasing leftover trimmings. There's always an assortment of different flavors so it's especially good if you don't know what you want/like and want to try a lot of options. I highly recommend trying her carrot cake and my coworkers (whom I share with) adore her pistachio and German chocolate cakes especially. She used to pack 3/4 small boxes into a paper bag, but now an order (less than $5) of cake trimmings is a pie round case full of trimmings. This is a cake I ordered for Father's Day. It is a yellow cake with chocolate frosting. When I called I was told that it was called a Mellow Yellow and they would decorate it specially for Father's Day. I marked off the name but this is not what I was expecting at all. I commented that the frosting was very dark because I asked for milk chocolate. I was told it was "African Chocolate." The cake was leaning and the frosting was not uniform and was clumpy in spots. The glitter and plastic decoration...well what do you think? If this was a cake that I purchased from a bake sale I would not be as picky but I really was expecting more from an established bakery. W H O A for the *first* time ever, this ever-elusive baker/gumbo-maker was spotted... with her shop OPEN?!!!! (and I tutor at the local library, which means I do pass by this a fair share en route) i cannot recount how many # of times I have driven past Cassandra's shop (have had occasion to talk with her at a local fundraiser for the city, and have spotted her goods sold in individual plastic containers at Seabreeze in Berk., at a market in El Cerrito, and at a BBQ place), and wondered, "When does this woman keep shop anyway?" It's more likely to see the closed sign than you would ever the open. And yet, literally one hour ago, I saw her shop open, with screen door propped open to enjoy the breeze, with the antiquated store window adorned with a rare sighting: the oval sign lit, stating OPEN. Though i did not stop and patronize, Cassandra's red velvets are something else. Done quite above average (but sorry, quite inferior to Marita's!!!). She also makes a coconut cake; one friend I know would love it. Don't judge a book by its cover; it's the best advice I can give you with regards to the aesthetics of her store versus the goods that materialize from her spatula. Heard she sells gumbo around town as well. Having made some myself in my past, I pass on that...but if the whim hits, I know where I'm headed! read more

Cassandra's is a long time family business that I remember well from my childhood. They are still around because they make awesome baked goods! I go to Cassandra's faithfully at least 3 times a year; Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those holiday meals just aren't complete without a pie- or two or three, from Cassandra's.
