My girlfriend and I were having drinks at a pub about 1.5 miles outside of Arundel. It got dark while we were there, so we called a taxi from Castle Cars. The dispatch said our car would be there in 5 to 10 minutes. It took a bit longer but soon we were on our way back to the centre of Arundel. The driver must have been in a hurry even though it was a quiet Saturday night in a quaint village, because he was speeding... REALLY FAST.
I wasn't paying too much attention, but my girlfriend was on edge, staring out the front of the car window, to see what the driver was doing, speeding along a poorly lit country road.
Suddenly there was a bump and a swerve. The driver started saying he was sorry and that had never happened before, and my girlfriend was quiet. I hadn't quite clocked what was going on at that point. By the time we neared our hotel, however, I'd gotten the gist of the situation.
THE DRIVER HAD HIT AND KILLED A MALLARD DRAKE.
My girlfriend paid (and even gave a 40p tip) and we went off to dinner. It wasn't until we were seated and talking about it that anger really started to set in for me. Like...
1) We were REALLY lucky that it was a duck and not a larger animal. I'm from Canada and I've seen the damage deer can do to a car. I think even a fox would be quite horrible for everyone involved.
2) We were really lucky that the driver was able to correct the car after the impact and the swerve, since the road is surrounded by trees and edged along water. Also there was only one other van parked on the side of the road, so there were fewer humans to hit.
3) We were lucky that we hadn't decided to walk home along the dark country road and encounter a similarly reckless driver. We were lucky to not be the duck.
4) I cannot believe that in the end we PAID A MAN £5 to drive recklessly; put himself, us and others in danger; AND kill a duck. And we TIPPED him! If I were that cab driver I DEFINITELY would have apologized profusely and said the ride was on me. If I had been in the right mindset when my girlfriend went to pay him, I DEFINITELY would have fought it because it just seems SO WRONG to pay to be put into a dangerous situation like that.
I didn't get the driver's info, but if you were the driver who drove two ladies from the Black Rabbit pub near Arundel to the Swan Hotel in Arundel around 8:45pm on the 9th of April 2016 and hit a duck, you should be pretty ashamed. :( read more
