These non-profit orchid societies are made up of hard-working people who appreciate the beauty of orchids and wish to learn to grow the pretty flowering orchids. They hold annual shows that highlight the orchids that they are growing. The 67th Annual Kunia Orchid Show & Plant Sale was held March 22-23, 2025 in the Leilehua High School Gym. As with other orchid shows, the Kunia show features various orchids clubs showcasing their very best blooming splendor, with judging done the night before the show. Orchid clubs use a small "island" to create a wonderland of orchids, displaying them in a manner that appeal to the eye. In addition to the orchid displays, there is an ikebana display. Ikebana is an ancient form of floral decorating with a philosophy of "less is more" and following basic geometric shapes. There are educational sessions for beginner orchid enthusiasts and the more experienced orchid growers. Sessions are at 11a and 1p each day and may include how to grow orchids with factors of water, light, and fertilizer; best type of orchid media for growing; and transplanting orchids. Local plant vendors bring their seedlings and blooming plants to attendees. The Kunia Kountry Store has a variety of plants available for sale for home garden, gardening supplies, and homemade baked goods. The orchid show is the main fundraiser for the non-profit Kunia Orchid Society. Proceeds support its monthly meetings by having guest speakers giving tips and lectures in sharing their expertise in orchid culture. The proceeds from the food and drink vendors specifically located at the entrance of the show benefit school athletics, Tech Education Program, Tech Images, and the Class of 2026. I don't normally attend the Kunia Show as I don't live nearby; however, I was in Wahiawa for an errand, and just so happened that the orchid show was going on. The Kunia Orchid Show is similar to other orchid shows put on by the various orchid societies geographically located on Oahu. The Kunia Show, as well as other orchid shows, is a sight to see, with so many colorful and beautiful stunning orchids, arranged beautifully on an island, with different varieties of orchids complementing each other with Spanish moss adding to the decor. So much to see with a wonderland of pretty blooming orchids everywhere! Kudos to the many orchid societies for presenting such stunning displays! And I saw a good friend whom I haven't seen for a number of years, Dave F, who is a member of Aiea Orchid Society and was assisting his orchid plant seller friend. Yes, he reminded that the 41st Aiea Orchid Club Show & Plant Sales is at Aiea Elem School Cafeteria on June 6-7, 2025 from 9a to 4p. It was good to catch up with him! Attending an orchid show as this allows me to interact with other growers to share info that we may not have. And what better way to learn if you're a beginner! Plus, connecting with professional orchid growers allows you to know the different orchid varieties and determine the ones that you enjoy and knowing how to grow them. Or just appreciating the beauty of orchids! Free admission and parking. Many people have not attended these shows because they are unaware that they exist, as most are held in school cafeteria and gyms during school breaks. I've always wished these orchid shows were situated at busy shopping malls where there is a lot of foot traffic, but understand that there may be cost expenses to the societies. In the meantime, we encourage the public to attend these shows to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of orchids! Support local!

I had not realized how many orchids are air plants, needing very little daily care. I'm still not brave enough to bring one home, but I did end up with a few other treasures.

We don't have to drive far to see Christmas decorations and we can sit on the side walk to watch and enjoy! I'm really glad they came back this year! There's many houses that have decorations in their cul-de-sac on Anapau Pl. It's really nice and enjoyable to see them all. I can't believe all the hard work they put in to set everything up because they enjoy it and they know we all enjoy it. Their show hours are 7-9:30pm and each show lasts about 45 mins with a few mins in between. I wish I remembered how many songs were played but I lost count. It really is enjoyable and I hope everyones gets to experience it at least once! :)

There is even a booth to find out more about visiting and studying in Korea! Friday 1/5/2024 held at the Windward Community College from 10-5pm. Saturday 1/6 and Sunday 1/7 to be held in town at the Kawaiahao Church grounds. A round of applause for these young adults promoting the Korean Culture!

Okay so, my son and I came out here yesterday for the Dita Holifield's All American Rodeo. Look, I've lived on Oahu for 7 years and only recently heard about this! I've never been to a rodeo before, but I will definitely be making this an annual family tradition ;) My son (age 5) and I had so much fun. The events take place over three days, but I chose Saturday evening (the last day) because it worked with my schedule. Gates opened at 5, but we showed up 7 when the events started. Honestly, I wish I had showed up at 5 so that we could have walked around while there was still daylight. There were events for the kids, but since we arrived at 7, we went straight to the stands. I felt my son didn't really get to enjoy the entire event like he could have. Lesson learned. This event was packed, and lasted approx 2.5 hours. I love that it's located in Waimanalo...AWAY from town. I live in Honolulu, so this was a nice change of scenery. Yes, there are a lot of people who attend this event, but parking wasn't bad. They have police and staff guiding the way, so parking was quick. Surprising, cuz parking always sucks in town. Okay, keep in mind this was my FIRST rodeo. The only expectations I had were: Beer, food, horses, bulls and fine looking cowboys. Welp, they delivered on that! Don't ask me about the specifics of the events because I'm totally clueless on points, level of expertise, and what should be happening. I just went to have a good time. However, the last event was my favorite: Cowboy Hula. I believe there were 6 competitors who signed up for this crazy ass event. No they didn't dance hula. These 6 competitors are given a hula hoop and must stand, or squat, in the middle of the hoop. The object is to STAY IN THE HOOP! If you run out of the hoop, or the bull knocks you out of the hoop, you're out! lol It's like musical chairs, but with bulls. I'd come back just for that! Fun to see who the last man standing is gonna be. The winner this year was a woman, I believe she might have been from Georgia. So overall, they get 5 stars from me. This will have to be updated next year when I experience more of the attractions for the kids, food, etc. Again, I arrived later. We aren't rodeo people, but after seeing those fine looking cowboys, a girl might have to learn, up and relocate to Waimanalo..ya feel me ;)

Cowboys, Cowboys, and Cowboys!!!! Need I say more????…read more New Town & Country Stables has hosted the state's largest rodeo for the past 3 years with over 11,000 in attendance last year! I usually hate going to big events because parking is always a hassle and I tend to get lost in the shuffle. But New Town & Country Stables does an excellent job with managing traffic, in and out of their huge parking lot-even to cross traffic and turn left onto Kalanianaole Highway! And never mind the large crowd. I felt like I was walking into my auntie's house instead of sea of rodeo groupies. Everybody-from the parking attendees to the ticket booth workers to the food vendors-greeted us with warm smiles, offered to take pictures of us, gave my kids gifts, and even fed us bites of fresh sweet funnel cake. The show is loads of fun and guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat cheering and rooting for cowboys you don't even know. But the daytime shows are long and HOT with no shade. I suggest you bring a blanket or pad for the butt scalding cement seats, an umbrella for shade, and get yourself some refreshing 'Nalo Made Lemonade. And when that doesn't work...take cover in the stables and cuddle up with a bunnies, feed the goats, pretend to be a cowboy and go for a ride, or relax on miniature horse drawn carriage ride. I attended The All American Rodeo last year and this year and definitely will be there next year! If you can't wait that long there is a Stars-and-Stripes Ranch Sorting event on July 2, 2016 http://thecowboycalendar.com/venue/new-town-country-stables/ that is open and FREE to spectators. What I liked the best were low costs for quality orchids and other plants. My partner found some amazing, rare species worth triple the value. Also, it was just great to meet professional growers from nurseries throughout the State, including the neighbor islands. Apparently the best Orchid Show to visit is the Hilo Orchid show first week of August - so FYi and mark your calendars if you're interested and did not know.

Welcome to KALIHI home of the KALIHI Christmas parade that happens on the FRIDAY the day after…read morethanksgiving day. And it starts at 6pm starting from North king street near Nissan car dealership / Kalihi union church. This YEAR 2024 has welcomed back KALIHI Christmas parade with Santa, I believe the last couple years it didn't happen with Covid times and a year or two after Covid. So I'm GLAD that The community members who are in charged of this Kalihi Christmas parade has welcomed & brought back the parade for the community and people and kids of KALIHI. The parade course it self has taken a change of route due to city rail construction on dillingham, so believe now it starts from North king street all the way down to houghtailing street going north towards the mountain then all the ah till left on north school street and ends at Kapalama elementary school is woild say but not really gurantee. One thing I wish they would add to the parade is more Xmas floats and more passing of the candy and goodies for the Keiki in attendance watching the kalihi parade. So probablly next year will have more people passing out candy & treats. Can't wait till next year 2025 again to attend the Kalihi Christmas parade.
