Up until recently I had rarely stepped into this chemist, mostly because I would normally end up going into a chemist in the town while making other stops. But after having put up with a particularly poor experience, going forward I'll not be visiting again.
Earlier this Oct 2019, I thought I had lost a ring and was really anxious about having dropped it without realising it. On a particularly grey, crappy rainy Saturday morning, I felt so desperate about finding it that I decided I'd retrace my steps as far as I could remember, and stepped outside into the rain to do it. I walked slowly and was scanning the ground and pavements frantically, half hopeful and half disheartened. I eventually made my way up past this chemist and I decided to step inside and ask whether someone had maybe turned it in to them as a lost-and-found.
More desperate then anything, I stepped inside drenched, dripping wet in a black raincoat with the hood over my head, in soaked trackies and trainers.
There were some people waiting their turn at the counter and in front of me there was a tall security guard with a shaved head and goatee. I stepped toward him just as an older man, a local, walked up to him and said hello and started chatting. I walked up and stood in front of them - I was very conspicuous by my dodgy appearance, and tried to make eye contact to get the security guard to acknowledge me so I didn't interrupt their conversation. He did see me, but he just blanked me and ignored me. I stood there and noticed it, and shifted in place making it obvious I was there to ask something, but he just kept ignoring me and tried to pretend I wasn't there. He made small talk with the old man and I became conscious right away he must think I'm some random strange person wanting something or up to trouble.
After what seemed like maybe 5-6 minutes of awkward standing, I just gave up and went closer to the counter and after a few moments a girl at the counter asked if she could help me. I sighed in relief and exasperation, and I explained about the ring and that I was hopeful someone may have turned it in. I purposely spoke in my best, polite American accent with a clear loud voice so that the security guard could hear me and become aware I wasn't some vagrant. The girl was sympathetic, offered to take my contact details in case someone did turn it in, and then I thanked her and stepped back towards the main door to go out and continue my search outside.
That experience made me feel very self conscious and I felt that security guard went out of his way to ignore me like he did. I normally wouldn't be bothered about something like this but on this occasion I was really anxious about finding that ring and I was really just wanting a bit of help, but to be straight-up ignored was just not cool at all.
If this chemist reads this review and just shrug it off, then that's fine and it won't matter a jot to me now. But that experience really left a distinctly uncomfortable and kinda humiliating mark in my memory. I'm happy enough to make the longer journey into the town centre and even all the way to the Marshes than go back to this place. I did eventually find my ring, and by that stage I'd firmly decided that would be my last visit to Castletown Pharmacy. read more
