Peck Lake Park is located south of the St. Lucie Inlet. When you drive in to the park there is a…read morepaved loop road lined with picnic pavilions and grills. There is also a restroom. At the back of the loop is a hiking trail that leads you through mangroves to the intracoastal waterway which runs between the park and the Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge. The walk is about 15 minutes each way. Part of the path is gravel and part of it is an elevated wooden boardwalk that takes you over the wetlands. The 1/2 mile trail takes you through mesic flat woods, hard woods, mangrove swamps., and brackish slough. You cross over a spoil island that was created from the dredging of the intracoastal. There are interpretive signs along the way providing information on the Ais who were the Native people in this area thousands of years ago, and the plants and animals in the park. The park is a good place to spot birds during the spring and fall migration. You can find American Redstarts and Common Yellowthroats and Spotted Sandpipers along the shore in the winter.

Construction of the park began in 2005 at which time the county added mangroves to prevent shoreline erosion. It was decided that the park would be dedicated to passive recreation. Fishing piers were installed along with a picnic pavilion, benches, restrooms, and a quarter mile long paved trail and a .4 mile natural earth loop trail that runs through the park. Throughout the park are the burrows of gopher tortoises which are listed as a threatened species in Florida. Gopher tortoises have been hunted for meat, run over by vehicles, and sold as pets but the greatest blow to their population has been the destruction of their habitat. It was so nice to see so many safely protected in the park. The view of the water from this park is stunning. I wish I could have hung around until sunset and I plan to go back for that. Other than just sitting back and relaxing this park is excellent for fishing, a picnic, or just tossing a frisbee around. You can combine a trip to this park with a visit to Maggy's Hammock a half mile away where you can hike and see even more gopher tortoises. I love Martin County. It has so many beautiful parks like this one to discover and enjoy.

The park has two wooden boardwalk paths that cross over the mangroves to a 30 foot boardwalk and observation deck. The boardwalk is green. It is made out of recycled materials with a solar lighting system and thermoplastic handrails. The observation desk can be rented for private events. This is a very popular place to fish and I saw many people with their catch of tarpon, snook, and redfish. Humans weren't the only ones having luck with the fish. I had a wonderful time watching the wild birds swoop and dive into the river to grab their dinner. This is the perfect place to get some exercise, take in the beautiful view of the river, or watch the sun set.

The crew busted their butt running around unhooking fish and helping out the full boat with their fishing.. Dolphins followed the boat. Someone on the boat saw a shark. Lots of people caught fish of all kinds. These outing do depend a lot on weather and the nature, so we knew that we may catch nothing. Fortunately, it was a very productive trip! If you are prone to sea sickness take dramamine BEFORE getting onboard. One person got sick and didn't even apologize to the crew who had to clean the mess up.

We were able to catch 3 decent sized snapper that we kept. The crew were marking the fish so that everyone would be able to claim their fish at the end of the trip. When we got to the dock, there was no kind of order to be able to retrieve our fish. The staff of the boat put all of the fish out to take pictures (I guess for promotional purposes/advertising). But then, people started taking fish. By the time I could ask for our fish, they had been given away. All we were told was "sorry". Needless to say, we were not happy about the experience.

The park only has three picnic tables and a dirt parking lot. Although the view is stunning, the real reason to come here is to launch your kayak. This park is part of the Martin County Paddling Trail. If you have your own kayak you can launch from the sand beach and head east across the 3/4 of a mile intracoastal to reach the St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park which is the northern tip of a barrier island, ending where the St. Lucie River meets the ocean. It is one of the few undeveloped barrier islands on the east coast of Florida. This state park can only be reached by boat but it has restrooms, a free tram, picnic shelters, a 3,300 foot boardwalk, and an unspoiled hidden beach, From Cove Road Park you can also paddle south to Pecks Lake or north to the St. Lucie Inlet. You can have a lot of paddling fun launching from the park but note that the small parking lot fills up fast.

The park is completely surrounded by water providing stunning views and access to water based recreation. The boat ramp is one of the busiest in Martin County and is the closest access to the St. Lucie Inlet. There is a boardwalk that circles the perimeter of the park for fishing, walking, running, and biking. Other park amenities include a playground, outdoor fitness equipment, restrooms, finger piers for fishing, and pavilions available for rental for parties and events as well as personal picnics. This was the first park I have seen with open playground and fitness equipment since the shut down. The proximity to the water makes this a great place to view birds like seagulls, herons, pelicans, crows, and even parrots. During the year the city holds different events here like nights with movies and food trucks. This park is a great example of why I love Martin County. It is the perfect place to put your feet up and just watch the boats sail by. Beauty abounds with access to the waterways and recreational activities. Renew your spirit at Sandsprit.

You'll find lots of pavilions that offer shade for said pick nicks or to sit and watch the world go by. The park itself is surrounded by water with lots of waterfront walking paths as well as some beautiful tree canopied spots to get out of the Florida sun. There are some outdoor workout equipment as well as bathroom facilities that are clean and tidy. SCW and I were there during the week and parking was easy and it wasn't very crowded.
