The atmosphere is unique and they have a lot of rules for eating there, but that is what gives them a reputation I'd guess. Enjoyed breakfast there, they have a lot of specials and everything I had was great. The service was fine, they were polite and efficient. The entire restaurant has a antique look and feel which can tend to make you feel like you are paying too much for their food, but again the food is great so I'd recommend this place to anyone! read more

Food was pretty good. Quick and friendly service. The fact that the waiting area is on the same small stairway people use to leave is awkward and the tables are a little scrunched together. We love this place for the consistency in their food, hearty portions, great service, and tall mimosas! If you are looking for a satisfying meal, mom and pop funky spot in downtown Bozeman this is the spot. All the cat jokes and decorations make the joint kinda fun. Saw them voted #1 for a Bloody Mary online. First of all they don't have a liquor license so a white wine Bloody Mary is not my idea of a good Bloody Mary. Decided to try a Mimosa instead and got a pint glass of orange juice with a splash of flat Prosecco. They don't make omelets...I thought all breakfast places served omlets?! The burrito is gigantic and 90% canned beans, 5% sauce and 5% eggs. Not impressed. Lastly they have a list of restaurant rules they are likely intended to be funny but are actually just ridiculous. "You will he asked to leave if you hang out after you are done eating" "pay cash"...there are about 20 "rules". Would not recommend. read more

We were passing through Bozeman and chose Cateye Cafe to have breakfast. It was a warm lovely morning, so we ate outdoors on the patio. I just had "The Smidge", fried eggs, "taters", & toast. I asked for the eggs "over medium well" as I like a runny yoke but no gaggifying runny whites. The waitress told me that I would want them "over medium" then. I figured she knew her cook better than I, so took her word for it. And I got the eggs with runny whites. Really? Anyway, I just mashed them up, tried not to think about the gelatinous, mucousy whites, and ate them anyway. It had taken awhile to get our orders and I just did not want to hold up the table while everyone else ate and I waited and then ate alone. I think this place is probably better than that and will go with my gut next time and insist on over medium well. (First world problems are SO difficult. Hahaha!) read more

The food was good and made well. Severely, overpriced for what you get though. This place makes you pay for the hipster vibe more so than the actual quality of the joint or its product. We froze the entire time we were there because we were seated in front of the stairs to the door. This made it hard to enjoy our breakfast as we were all shivering. Meh. I ordered coffee, and an item on the "Weekend Specials" menu called "Eggs and Links" - two eggs, sausage links, potatoes and blueberry coffee cake. I spent $17.75 not including tip. Sadly the potatoes were undercooked, eggs unseasoned, blueberry coffee cake under-blueberried (I could only find 3-4 at the bottom and no blueberry flavor whatsoever), and the sausage links from the menu were - without my knowledge- replaced with the day's special: a very, very dry patty. Service was good, and when asked how my meal was, I mentioned the dry patty. My server looked at me with surprise and said she'd "let the kitchen know," but no offer was made to replace, remake or substitute. I ended up not finishing it. Overall I'd say I could have an identical breakfast at an iHop or Denny's for half the price. Perhaps I should have sensed a red flag from the extensive list of half-funny, half-passive-aggressive instructions for customers, including not asking for coffee when you've "yapped" so long it got cold, and "if you have a fork, you don't need a spoon for your coffee." Kind of cute but also kind of annoying when the food turned out to be so underwhelming. read more

By the second piece it was mushy and unpleasant. The potatoes were pretty good. The service left something to be desired also. I don't want to completely give this place a bad rap. Found the cateye cafe on Yelp the morning after a great evening in Bozeman. My wife and I had already had a wonderful dinner at the copper whiskey the night before so I wasn't sure if it would be possible to bat 1000 on great dinning experiences in Bozeman however the catseye was the cherry on top to an already wonderful weekend getaway to Bozeman. The staff was very nice and an old brick bldg. converted into a cafe, we timed it right because we walked in and a table was available however the masses began showing up and there was a small wait for others, sometimes everything just falls into place and the cateye was a wonderful way to end a great trip. read more

We stayed at The Lark and happened upon this amazing little nook for breakfast. Just north of Main Street. The ambiance was absolutely the best, warm, not divey but far from corporate stupor decor. Perfectly inviting. Giant pancakes and sausage patties the size of a hamburger patty. I just wish I could eat and drink here once a week. Oh, the huckleberry 'man-mosas' were delicious and dangerous. I used to love coming to this place for breakfast. However I went yesterday and the staff was extremely rude. After moving us to another table (I understand they were worried about needing a bigger table for larger groups as they tend to get busy) they told us as we were finishing that they knew we were finishing up but they had tables waiting (we were there for 1.5 hours and had continued to order weren't just sitting). I have NEVER been asked to leave. I won't be going back. There are plenty of amazing restaurants in town that treat me wonderfully and I will be supporting them instead. read more

Disclaimer: I've only been here for breakfasts. Everybody else in town seems to love Cateye, but I wasn't that impressed with their breakfasts. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing because the waffle and pancake lovers really like it. It's likely I was spoiled by Dad's breakfast potatoes, because theirs didn't really do it for me. I would actually like to give this restaurant no stars. The manager was our server and didn't even serve us, except to bring out our side of bacon. Apparently when you're the owner of a joint you don't have to do you're job on the floor. And then we had to wait 10 minutes until she finally came to our table to grab our bill to pay. To end the grand breakfast at Cateye, she didn't even split the bill in half like we asked because she walked off with our cards in the middle of us trying to explain what we wanted. I've heard advertisements on the radio featuring the Cat Eye Cafe's belief we should wash our melons during preparation to avoid harmful soil contaminants from entering our bodies. This stuck in my mind enough to take my partner here for breakfast, but the irony of how terrible the food was remained fresh on my tongue while attempting to finish my "food". We went on a Biscuits and Gravy Run around the area trying to find the best in town. After entering we both commented on how kitschy the interior was. This wasn't the problem. The panel windows separating the kitchen area from the dining area had a lot of promise. We saw the potential. However, there was so much dirt and dust in the curtains and up high in the air vent filling the dining room we wondered if they hadn't thoroughly cleaned since the vintage wall hangings were first put up. I kept looking at the "Litter Boxes" signs (bathroom) and felt enveloped by a sense we were in a dive. The bacon arrived dry, overcooked, and barely warm. The over easy eggs were certainly runny, but to the point the whites weren't cooked either. The biscuits were decent, but the gravy was a flavorless, floury sludge with a formed skin on the surface. It wasn't until attempting to eat the fruit and yogurt bowl, however, that the nail in the coffin had been hammered down. Canned mandarin oranges adorned a soupy yogurt texture that reminded us both of an unknown body secretion. While looking through the menu, we noticed an interesting disclaimer that in order to not be "rude" patrons we should finish all of our food. This might explain the waitress' disgruntled demeanor when checking out at the register, but frankly, with food like that, they should lower their expectations of what someone should have to consume. We clarified that she was speaking to us, because it was in the tone she may have used to command a dog. "Go inside!" she repeated. The service there is consistently below average. We live in Bozeman and have been to breakfast here a number of times. After a half hour wait to be seated, we sat down and ordered coffee and our food. It was just the two of us, and we got our usual breakfast favorites. I had not even had a second cup of coffee when our waitress came over and said that they were going to have to ask us to leave because there were so many people waiting. I expressed that I was wanting a refill of coffee and another girl came over, slammed down a to go cup and said, "If you want more coffee, here's a cup...we have a no camping policy !" I was very offended. I will probably never go back there and will warn my friends. read more

This is the best breakfast joint in town. I'd highly suggest going on weekdays though. There's a line out the door every weekend morning. For lunch, I love the local burgers and meatloaf. The first time I brought my family here I was impressed. Great food, good service, cool campy interior. However this visit was terrible. We stopped in for brunch for my twin's birthday. The staff's attitude bordered on rudeness, at one point stopping my 5 year old son midway through his order and telling him to say please... Enforcing manners in my children is my job not yours. My wife and both kids ordered pancakes which were fine but came covered in what appeared to be fruit yogurt (not mentioned). And my chicken fried steak would have been more accurately called chicken fried hamburger patty. For the price there are lots of other breakfast options in town. read more

The menu did not clarify that this was really NOT a chicken fried steak and instead some inedible Frankistein concoction. The only reason they got any stars was that the pancakes were very good. Seriously, an awesome place. The staff is delightfully odd, with one of those good ol' fashioned snarky attitudes that are pleasant, and reminds everyone of an at-home cafe. The food is delicious, and the pie was to die for... and I'm not usually a pie kinda guy. For anyone who complains about the attitudes of the staff, just look at their "rules/guidelines" fliers throughout the restaurant; it's not rudeness, it's uniqueness.
