Visited Cathedral High School after many years due to the 2026 Middle School Academic Decathlon Quiz Bowl where more than 38 private schools competed academically. We had a good experience at Cathedral High School hosting this year's Middle School Academic Decathlon Quiz Bowl. Campus is just the right size however their athletic department and field seemed to have increased in size over the years. It seems like they did some renovations and expansion. The only draw back here is parking. It is difficult to find parking if you come later in the day. Thankfully for us we came in at 7am on a Saturday and found parking right in the front. Thank you Cathedral High School for hosting and making all of us Catholic schools from the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles area feel welcome. read more

I would highly recommend Cathedral HS, based on my personal experience with my son (Class of 2018). These are the most compelling reasons: 1. MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY. Your son will get the individual attention that he won't get from bigger LA Catholic high schools, like Loyola and Notre Dame (They don't have a focused STEM program). The curriculum is demanding, but your child will be guided all the way to graduation by no other than their indefatigable Program Director, Dr. Humphreys. Support covers financial, paid summer internships (i.e. Cedar Sinai), through the entire college application and testing experience. My son went to Johns Hopkins University (Pre-Med). He was also accepted at UCLA, UCSD, Boston U, and Villanova. 2. AFFORDABILITY. The tuition fee is unbelievably low for a private Catholic High School (half of Loyola's and Notre Dame's). Scholarship is given if your son gets accepted to the M&S Academy. The financial support and incentives do not end there, depending on your financial needs. I personally felt the school went out of their way to be as financially supportive as they can in our son's case. 3. STUDENT-CENTERED. The faculty and administration simply care. Your son will not be treated as just a statistic. With student population half of the likes of Loyola and Notre Dame, it is easier for the school to look after the students. University acceptance is 100%, or close to it, and it is by design. Your son will also develop a strong sense of brotherhood with his classmates. 4. VALUE FOR MONEY. My experience is that, at minimum, your son will be able to go to a State University by simply doing what he's supposed to do. The past few years, the school has been sending their top students to Ivy League schools and tier 1 Universities without costing the parents their arms and legs. As a graduate from the class of 2019, I can honestly say that this is not just a high school, this was a home, brotherhood, and a family. In my four years I was involved in KCHS/Video Production for 3 years, 4 theater productions, Basketball, Track & Field and Service C, I can honestly say that these were the best years of my life! To say our experience with Cathedral was poor is an understatement comparable to saying Covid19 is a mild Flu. Race based profanity directed at Black students is common place. Our son and several of his friends were the object of such a verbal assault which to this day the administration still fails to acknowledge. The facilities are mediocre and the school is close to homeless encampments. Better not to pay $10,000 a year for a bad experience that you can just as easily have at a low end public school for free. read more

A motivated student is not the only thing needed when it comes to their own path to success. It needs a school that EXPECTS you to succeed and provides the academics that are needed. It needs caring teachers that WANTS you to succeed and parents that are actively engaged in their son's school activities. We are fortunate that we did our research when it came down to picking a high school. What sold us was this Biology teacher, Dr. Humphreys who is also the Director of the Math and Science Academy at Cathedral. She was approachable, accessible, and relatable. When we first met with her, she already had an outline plan of what she expects from each student and recommendations of colleges that tailors to our son's grades, interest, personality, etc. I firmly believe that because of teachers like Dr. Humphreys and what Cathedral High School instilled in my son are the main reasons he is currently at a prestigious Ivy League College . When it was time for my other son to pick High Schools, we checked out several of them in the vicinity. At the end of the day (to no surprise) Cathedral High School once again came out on top. My son graduated from Cathedral High School in 2019 and had such a great experience!! The care and concern shown by the Administrative staff and faculty is outstanding. I recommend Cathedral because of its strong academics, good guidance system, very good counseling for college preparation. Graduated in 2017 and my experience at Cathedral was nothing short of amazing. As someone who was apart of the Math and Science Academy ran by Dao Humphreys, I was able to see firsthand the value of having teachers and staff who genuinely care about your success both personally and academically. Thanks to Cathedral and Dr. Humphrey's help I was able to land an acceptance to UC Berkeley, where I studied applied mathematics. Even now as a I start my professional career I find myself using a lot of the lessons and skills I learned during my time at Cathedral. 10/10 recommend for anyone looking to get a valuable education and experience. read more

I went here for 4 years... wow that was about 6 years ago! Man I am getting old. I liked my experience it wasnt as those clicke ones that you see on tv, never met a bully and didnt get into fights and I was friends with every click out there. The rallys held here every month was spectacular they really showed pride in the school and tradition... will I go back? I can visit, I guess. it seems as if they added some new things onto the school since I left. Great institution and I hear the sports teams are pretty good now read more

This is literally the worst school that I've attended, well it's only only one I've attended. I am currently a Junior at this school and I am in the academy program. Let me start by saying that the principle, Br. John is a horrible person and wants to work his students to the bone so that he doesn't have to spend money paying teachers for AP sessions. This year Br. John removed "classes" after school where we could go and have extra time to go over material as a class but because of the damn budget cuts because of the new building, he has absolutely become focused on collecting money for the building (starting with adding $20 extra to tuition). Do to there being no more AP sessions, we have to do double the work in our science, history, spanish, and math classes just because of dumb budget cuts. read more

Ah yes Welcome to the Graveyard! Students still welcoming us now elders haha. Strong Alumni Association and knowledgeable teachers and Brothers. So much improvement through the years. Now with the new theatre and classes I can't ditch through the annex gate anymore haha. Such a clean football field who vacuums it? Would like to check out the open house one day. Good experience had there. Always dreamed of being a student there since I was a little child ruffling through my relative's Chimes Yearbook during Saturday Family Days. From then on I said that Cathedral was for me. Although my mother wanted Loyola and I placed tested at Murphy I found a way to get in Cathedral in the nick of time. So close I didn't have to test and my first semester was kind of Mickey mouse. But when the semester grew it was very challenging even summer school. You really have to work hard. It is a Lasallian School. Back then we were like a cheaper Loyola. Most of my mates were accepted to Loyola but wanted Cathedral to be with their grade school mates and it was more affordable due to the fact coming from big families. The Brothers there were great. Special mention to Brother Rob Walley wherever you are. After I went to public my former Phantoms would visit their girlfriends at my school and always greeted me and kept Brother up to date about my writing. He was so humorous. To make us write he would say "You better bust a move with that pen!" If Algebra didn't become my Achilles's heel I would be wearing that purple ring. But I'm happy for my time at the Graveyard and kept in touch with Phantoms even when I went to Crown Hill. It is true "Once a Phantom, Always a Phantom." Luckily i got one of the hip brothers. br. rob. very cool. by the next school year we had official uniforms that we voted on the year earlier. we voted not to have preparatory on the logo. the christian brothers do have a distnct was of teaching. not just here and abroad. that's why many grads become brothers. this is highly recommended instead of loyola (too much moolah) and now that murphy is closed (not enough moohlah) almost went there took the darn test, suggestes summer school hell na. got in the graveyard cuz it was easy to get in. once you have graduated relative, boom you in. But it was cool. all the history and uniqueness of the campus and student body. It's highly competive now which is typical for a catholic school. hopefully tuition is not too high, since the bros have a tradition of serving low income families. read more
