***THIS IS A LONG OVERDUE REVIEW of Dr. Catherine DeUgarte & PFCLA. Gosh, where do we begin. In or about March, 2020 to June, 2022, we attempted at conceiving naturally but to no avail. We discovered that one of her tubes were blocked and a few polyps needed to be surgically removed. In or about June 2022, it dawned on me that IVF was a viable option (mind you, I've never considered IVF prior to this and possibly even had subconscious bias towards it). With the new epiphany, came the relentless due diligence on Yelp, Google and the internet at large. We narrowed down the potential doctors / clinics to: 1) Dr. Wendy Chang of SCRC (Southern CA Reproductive Center in Beverly Hills) and 2) Dr. Catherine DeUgarte of CMD Fertility. (NOTE: PFCLA was not on our list at this juncture because Dr. Catherine DeUgarte had her own practice at CMD Fertility and had not yet merged with PFCLA). We ultimately took a leap of faith and went with Dr. Wendy Chang of SCRC - and our experience was disastrous. The final IVF result was an abject failure. Throughout the entire IVF process, interactions with Dr. Wendy Chang of SCRC v. our subsequent interactions with Dr. Catherine DeUgarte of PFCLA were literally night and day. Since this Yelp review is not intended to be a scathing repudiation of Dr. Wendy Chang & SCRC, I will refrain from delving into the specificities. The aforementioned account is predicated solely on our personal experience with Dr. Wendy Chang & SCRC, so it's advisable to conduct your own due diligence. After our disastrous experience with Dr. Wendy Chang & SCRC, the process of which consummated in or about December, 2022, we were disheartened, dejected, reeling and livid all at the same time, so we decided to implement a hiatus and respite from IVF altogether. Lo and behold, in January, 2023, we proceeded with the unthinkable - we began choosing an egg donor and surrogate via HATCH (an affiliate of PFCLA). We executed a contract and paid all fees up-front in order to secure a spot on the surrogate waitlist, while we began searching for an egg donor. Talk about desperation on our part. The silver lining, however, was Greg Wiles, the President of HATCH, who was phenomenal during the many telephone conferences and email exchanges. Greg was such a breath of fresh air as he patiently walked us through the entire egg donation / surrogacy process. I truly appreciate him. In or about March, 2023, we miraculously rekindled our spirits and decided to give IVF another chance. Mind you, we were then [concurrently] proceeding with both IVF and Egg Donation / Surrogacy pathways - no one has ever heard of such a concurrent process. Then came Yelping and Googling all over again for an IVF doctor / clinic. Our due diligence this time around resulted in 1 clear choice: Dr. Catherine DeUgarte of PFCLA (Note: Dr. Catherine DeUgarte of CMD Fertility merged with PFCLA in 2023). Dr. Catherine DeUgarte is literally GODSENT. After thoroughly reviewing our prior IVF case files from SCRC, Dr. Catherine DeUgarte was genuinely confident and optimistic. We trusted her through the process and she exceeded our expectations 100x over. We netted 6 healthy embryos ( "Zero" with Dr. Wendy Chang of SCRC). Go figure. Fast forward to March 28th, 2024 - OUR SON WAS BORN. ***You may take this review with a grain of salt and conduct your own due diligence. As a seasoned lawyer, however, I perform in-depth due diligence vis-à-vis any and all major decisions I make in my personal life, with the unparalleled meticulousness that you will rarely see in any individual. I want to thank PFCLA and in particular, Dr. Catherine DeUgarte. Catherine, we just want you to know that the countless hours you invest in your patients; the incredibly genuine and caring personal attention you confer to your patients; your steadfastness in providing your cell phone number to your patients; your deliberate decision to take on only a limited number of patients per year in order retain quality over quantity; and of course, your amazing clinical acumen, ARE NOT IN VAIN. Dr DeUgarte saved my life. Did I get your attention? Good. It's the truth. I met Dr D in 2014 when I decided to freeze my eggs. I was 36, single, and not even sure if I wanted kids, but I wanted the option to have them if Mr Right ever showed up. She was so compassionate, funny, down to earth and kind that I continued to see her for regular exams. Her all-female staff and spa-like exam rooms turn what is usually an uncomfortable doctor visit into a welcoming, supportive environment. At 38, I casually mentioned a dull, numb pain in my right breast. Even though I was two years away from the recommended age of mammograms and had no family history of breast cancer, Dr D sent me to get a mammogram. Two months after my wedding (Mr Right DID show up!), I was diagnosed with HER2+ Stage 2 breast cancer. Dr D not only called me lot tell me herself, but she told me that she'd already called the top breast cancer surgeon at UCLA and gotten me an appointment for the next day - on the surgeon's day off. Additionally, she'd already told the surgeon that she wanted to do an additional egg retrieval/embryo preservation before I started treatment. I got the news that I had cancer on Tuesday and I started my retrieval meds that Friday. Dr D also reached out on my behalf to non-profits that aid breast cancer patients with the high cost of fertility treatments since my insurance wouldn't cover any of it. For years, Dr D walked alongside me, supporting my women's health needs as well as my spirits. She continued to guide our fertility journey and made recommendations for acupuncturists and non-traditional methods. Of course, she used the most recent data from the scientific fertility world as well. When the time came to face the reality that my body just had been through too much and that we could only have a baby via surrogate, she was caring, nurturing and honest. She guided us through the complicated process during the even more complicated time of covid. I'm thrilled to share that, at 45, I am cancer-free, healthy and the mother of a perfect baby boy, made from one of those eggs we froze back in 2014. Dr D made a speech at our baby shower that still gets people emotional when we talk about it. We are now starting our sibling journey with the same surrogate and with Dr D's guidance and friendship. We know that we would not have our family without Dr D. It didn't happen in the way we planned or hoped that it would, but it happened in a way that will give our children one hell of an origin story! I also know that I would not be alive today if she hadn't encouraged me to get the mammogram I thought I didn't need. She truly is the most caring, most thorough doctor I've ever had and I feel so fortunate to have her in my life. read more

In early 2024, my wife and I found out we would need to go through IVF in order to conceive a child. At first, it was devastating. While IVF is incredible, no couple wants to do it if they can help it. It's expensive, it's stressful, and it can really test you as a couple and as individuals. We quickly decided that if we were going to go through with this process, we would need to do our research and find the best possible clinic and physician. Before long we realized that Dr. Catherine DeUgarte at Pacific Fertility Center is one of the best in the business. We were patients at UCLA, but it was clear that in the big hospital system, we would be just another couple on the conveyor belt. Pacific, however, offers something much more personal, a boutique style care with doctors and staff that genuinely love what they do. Flash forward to today -- My wife is about to enter her 16th week of pregnancy and it wouldn't be possible without Dr. D and Pacific. If I could give Catherine 6 stars I would. The level of service and care we received from both her and her staff was excellent 100% of the time. From the moment we walked in she began educating us about the fertility process. She was always available to answer our questions 7 days per week, morning and night. Whenever we arrived the staff always greeted us immediately. We rarely waited more than a few minutes. Also their billing was 100% transparent. From the first day we were told what all the fees would be for visits and medication and the costs were exactly as expected. And most of all the process was SUCCESSFUL! We are now expecting and are very excited to be first time parents. I should contrast this by saying that we went to another facility a couple years earlier and had a TERRIBLE experience at a place called Santa Monica Women's Health. The staff were cold and terse. We saw a different doctor every time. The doctors never knew what we were there for. When we asked questions they would say "You should already know that. We explained that to you already." And they charged us 4x the price the promised, then would not reverse it. While the doctors were nice, the overall experience was a nightmare, largely due to poor service from the office staff and poor communication between the doctors about what procedures we were having. What did I tell you guys about trusting only Dr D and staff at CMD Fertility for growing our family?! That time has come and our family just grew with another sweet member thanks to the loving professionalism of Dr D. Having a baby through a pandemic it's not an easy thing, my wife going alone to the multiple appointments so that Dr D can make the right decision when to transfer is hard, but the staff and dr made us feel good, safe and secure and like going to a friend's house, even through FaceTime. You even get a graduation present when you're discharged from her care. Even if you're discharged from her care, she occasionally checks in with you, during pregnancy and after birth as her busy schedule permits. I had a great experience with Dr. D and the CMD staff and am now 17 weeks pregnant with my first child! While no IVF experience is going to be inexpensive, I found her prices to competitive if not lower than the other places that I looked. With CMD you get the more intimate experience of a boutique office with the benefits of the larger facilities of PFCLA (which is across the hall) when it comes to retrievals and transfers, etc. The nurses and staff there are also very kind. To add to the convenience, the lab for blood draws is right down the hall and you get priority over walk ins as a patient of Dr. D. Dr. D is very kind and personally followed up with me via phone call after procedures. She was also personally accessible if I needed something after hours. IVF is an overwhelming process and Dr. D can be very busy. But if I felt like an appointment was moving too fast, I would just let her know I needed more time with her for additional information, advice or just to process what I was going through and she would always take the time I needed. She had great communication with my OB and the transition from Dr. D to my OB for my prenatal care was seamless. I am very grateful for Dr. D as well as her staff. I was a patient of Dr.D for over a year, we started treatment just when the pandemic hit, throughout the tough times she made sure that we kept on track, never faltered on our goal to have a baby. Dr.D and her staff became like an extended family. I always loved visiting her office, I was welcomed by caring people, that I am now very fond of. The nurses, Andrea, Christine, Maria, Jaquie, they're all incredible, Dr.Nefertiti, Karla in reception, Alan in LabCorp even the embryologist that I can't remember her name! They are all beautiful people that do their jobs with glee and it shows. I felt so cared for during my treatment, Dr.D performed every ultrasound. She remembered everything we talked about, addressed my questions and concerns. She was always reachable, I can't tell you how much this meant to me. I felt like I had an expert guiding and taking care of me throughout this crazy journey, she was present. This is priceless and I'm very grateful for her. My IVF experience was not easy, there were moments of heartache and despair, and through the tough times, she was honest and straightforward but with empathy and kindness. She tweaked the treatment each cycle to get better outcomes in the next rounds. After the third round, I was ready to give up but Dr.D wasn't, she knew we were almost there and we did one more round, and in that last round, we got one egg, one golden egg. The nurses that primarily worked with us were Andrea and Christine, and occasionally Maria as well. During our time under their care, the nurses were super helpful, did a great job at teaching us how to do all of the injections, were always quick to respond to our emails, and felt like friends every time we entered the clinic. Front desk Carla always has a quick smile and lighthearted positivity that sets you in a good mood before your appointment. Acupuncturist Dr. Nefertiti lends the perfect support that's needed, she will help you with supplements and diet guidelines, help you feel strong and prepared for your embryo transfer, and be by your side as much as you need her. She's absolutely wonderful. You will also get to know the LabCorp staff on a first-name basis, and they are all great at painlessly drawing blood, which you will do a lot of. No parts of infertility are easy, there are ups and downs, small successes and many failures. But what remained the same was Dr. D's belief that we will become parents, that it is possible, and that she would help us no matter what. She went through all of the ups and downs with us, holding our hands along the way. She's a person that will never give up on you, never lose hope, and is always striving for a better outcome. We felt completely comfortable and confident in her hands; if one treatment didn't have great outcomes she was always prepared with a new protocol to try. If one level or factor is not on point, she will reschedule your treatment - which may be hard but we just trusted her expertise fully and let go to the process. We always appreciated that she was a perfectionist - even if it meant rescheduling a transfer - because she wasn't looking for "almost", she always wants the best odds for success. We also appreciated how she delivers bad news, always with a maternal warmth of support. The more time you spend getting to know all of these amazing people at CMD you see how they celebrate all the little steps forward and that they care for their patients success. Dr. DeUgarte is a great fertility doctor. She has a warm personality and has patients' best interests in mind. She will ask you take supplements for three months before treatment to ensure the best result possible. Her staffs are wonderful as well, Jacqueline, Maria and Christine are friendly and responsive. The office sends you an updated calendar to follow after each visit and provide details written instructions on meds, so you are clear about the next step and don't feel like just another headcount. My review was deleted 3 times so I am posting this again to let everyone know how horrible this doctor is. Dr. DeUgarte is the most incompetent and unethical doctor that I have ever come across.  Having used her as my fertility doctor,  I lost everything I had planned for years and suffered a lot as consequences.  The damage done was extensive and irreversible.     1.  She twice implanted my 2 normal embryos at the wrong time, resulting in killing both of them.  Those 2 embryos were my last chance of having a child because they were from my frozen eggs when I was younger.     2.  She was against doing ERA testing claiming it was not good for my body.  I later consulted other doctors and they all disagreed with her.   3.  After 2 failures, for the following IVF, she suggested doing the ERA.  She couldn't do the procedure due to her lack of skills.   She spent a long time poking inside me and didn't know what she was doing.  Then she said she might have to use a more intensive surgical procedure to perform the task.  She then had her nurse ran to another clinic to get a doctor to do the procedure for her.  The other doctor did it easily in few minutes.     4.  I left her place and asked for my medical record.  Two other patients' medical records were also sent to me.  One of patients' husband's sperm analysis report was also included.  So 3 people's personal information were sent to me.   5.  She refused to speak to me afterward when I asked to talk to her about my negative experience at her place.   6. I saw on Trelis that there is a medical malpractice case under her name that spanned for over few years.  All these positive reviews on yelp make me think this is a true con artist at work. read more

If there was an option for 100 stars, Dr. DeUgarte and her team would get every last one of them. Aside from the fact that my wife and I were just blessed with our first baby, which wouldn't have been possible without Dr. D, my review (and compliments) is actually for the love and care from CMD throughout the process of getting us to this stage. Every phone call, every visit, every check up was done in a comfortable state. We were never rushed, never treated like a number, never felt that our questions went unanswered and ALWAYS felt like as if we were family to Dr. D and her team. Visiting and using the services of a fertility clinic is never an ideal one but sadly is the case more and more often. Once the reality sets in that using a fertility clinic is the best option for your family, you have to decide which clinic to go, and when the stakes are so important and every move by the doctor is so vital to a successful result, you have to go with one of the best clinics and doctors in the country and that is why we went to Dr. D and CMD. 100 Stars. read more

I love Dr DeUgarte. I can not begin to recommend her highly enough. I even flew in from DC just to see her and I would not trust ANYONE else with such sensitive procedures. If you or someone you love is looking into fertility treatment of any kind, or freezing of your good stuff, Dr D is the most honest, forthright, gentle, kind and intelligent physician - possibly on the planet for this kind of thing. For annual care, NO. Dr. DeUgarte did not see my ovary on one of my annual check ups, could not find it, and wasn't concerned. I ended up having emergency surgery for a GRAPEFRUIT sized dermoid cyst on my ovary and ended up losing my Fallopian tube and ovary after experiencing the worst pain imaginable after it contused. These cysts are slow growing and she missed it completely over the years. Conveniently for her, her office had zero pictures in my file. Yelp needs a 10-star scale! I cannot recommend this doctor or office team more than I do. Dr. DeUgarte and her team are an amazing part of my journey. I recently graduated from her medical care after 10+ weeks of a good-looking pregnancy to move on to an OB. It's been hard for me to sit down and write exactly how I feel because I never pictured that I would be here. To sit and write this would mean that I'm at the end of my journey with CMD Fertility, and I feel so happy to be in this place, but simultaneously it is bittersweet to part ways. My story. I was married in 2014, and my husband and I immediately tried the idea of "whatever happens...happens." But after 3 - 6 months....nothing happened. Hmmm...that's odd, no pregnancy? I was 36-ish at the time, and had an OBGYN, who liked the wait and see approach. I wanted to get a little more aggressive, but it still took almost two full years before I did an HSG, a SA, and went to 2 other fertility doctors. Fast forward to finding Dr. D in May of 2016. I was instantly impressed with her high energy, good spirit, and sense of humor. She is incredibly smart and knowledgeable, but at the same time. It just always felt like we had a partnership, and that she legitimately understood my body and deeply cared. After a few rounds of cycle tracking and medication, ultimately, she requested an MRI and she honed in on the major culprits, which were "downplayed" in my HSG report by other doctors--uterine fibroids. With the MRI, she wanted to more deeply evaluate: how many, where, and tried to determine if these were likely barriers to successful implantation. Chances were--I was conceiving, but not implanting. In the fall of 2016--she recommended me to and worked very closely with Dr. William Parker of UCLA (see my other 5-star yelp review for him) so that I would have a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Dr. DeUgarte was there for me, as I consulted with Dr. Parker, and checked in before and after my surgery because she has incredible bedside manner. So, I had surgery in March 2017, and was informed by Dr. Parker and Dr. DeUgarte that I could begin to try again in June 2017. In May, Dr. D and I set up another plan, we'd try naturally during the summer--no medications, maybe move on to IUI, and ultimately be open to IVF. I supposed you could say, we found the magic beans. We tried on our own, and on the 1st try, I found out I was pregnant in June! After 2 years of trying, and only 1 year under Dr. D's care--I was overwhelmed with tears and emotion that I saw my 1st positive pregnancy test. It was like a puzzle had been solved. Wow! Overall, the entire staff is phenomenal: Maria, Karen, Joselyne, Jacqueline, Zuzana, Costina, and Alan the lab tech. Who likes to have their blood drawn? Almost no one, but Alan was always so amazing and comforting and patient. Maria always greets you with a smile and knows you by name, and I never wait long. Karen, Joselyn and Jacqueline were 100% invested whenever they would call, schedule things, or follow up with test results. Everything that this staff does is with a smile and with great attention to detail. I'm sure that they know that they are all angels, who each have a special calling. Being in the medical profession is already so selfless, but this line of work takes a different type of compassion, sensitivity, and social intelligence. I can't imagine the level of emotions that they deal with on a daily basis, but I have only experienced complete joy and positivity even on their busiest days. Therefore, when I graduated, it truly felt like leaving the nest. I'd grown so accustomed to this sweet office and staff. But my heart is warmed--knowing that my beautiful baby has a very lovely origin story that will forever include Dr. DeUgarte and the team of CMD Fertility. All I have to say is hands down Dr. Deugarte and her team since day one have given their all when it comes to the needs of their patients. I have known Dr. Deugarte for 3 plus years now, Dr. Deugarte and the CMD team will go beyond and above to make sure all patients are doing well in any procedure that is being done. I came into Dr. Deugarte due to abnormal bleeding. Honestly, pain for everyone is different, as for me the first step was the Fluid Ultrasound (not the best procedure to go through but well worth it) Dr. Deugarte then advised me that I was going to need a polyp removal since that was most certainly the reason for the abnormal bleeding. Although any type of surgery or procedure big or small scares me, Dr. Deugarte and her team made the process so easy. Day of surgery I was extremely nervous but Dr. Deugarte made the experience less nerve-wracking by talking me through the process and answering any questions I might have had before the procedure. I left the procedure with no pain and honestly yes I was a little off due to the anesthesia but once I got home and ate I was perfectly fine. Within a week I had my follow up appointment and was cleared. (let me add procedure was done in 2017) Today March 2020 although we have a lot of stuff going on in this world I'm glad to say that after the procedure I am now 18 weeks pregnant. If it wasn't for the whole process I went through with Dr. Deugarte and her team I don't see how this would have been the next chapter of my life. I love everything about CMD Fertility. I went to another ivf doctor and had a terrible experience so I know what good looks like. Her pricing is reasonable for the quality of care you receive. She is thorough, caring, realistic. Her staff tells you lab results when they come in which is so nice because you don't have to nag them and every lab result is important to you in this process. Dr D (before Covid) would give me a hug at each appt which is very nice- this is such an emotional process. I tried a few round of IUI with her and then moved onto IVF when I was ready. I did get pregnant with her from first go of ivf! She had a lot of tips for acupuncture, supplements etc. she doesn't sell her own - she just has suggestions which I like. Dr. D and the staff at CMD are absolutely amazing! Dr. D is so warm and welcoming. She spent over an hour with us on our consultation going over every possible scenario and step of the process, answering every question we had. We were happy to find an LGBT friendly doctor that we loved so much! She even made sure to get a history and information on my wife, who was the non carrying partner, in case she wants to carry in the future. She seemed genuinely interested in our life and getting to know us on the virtual consultation. Every visit at the office, she made us feel comfortable and took the time to answer any questions. She was good at being flexible with my schedule as well. She's easy to reach and gives you her cell phone to text when you need. Our journey with Dr D began 2 years ago, and I am currently 9 weeks pregnant with our first child. When we first started this journey, we were so lost, we had no idea what we were doing. Our doctors and the friends we asked all pointed us in different directions but a few people recommended one facility so we went with them. Big mistake. We were cattle there, waiting forever for our turn to get herded in, poked and prodded, and then pushed out, always thru the credit card turnstile. When we finally had enough, we gave Dr. D a try largely based on these reviews. To all of you who reviewed her so well - that's everyone - thank you!! We are forever grateful to have found her. UPDATE: This was my review from 2014 when she worked for PFC. She is the very best in fertility!!! Where do I start. Dr. Duguarte is the best....the absolute best. I saw her for a little over a year. A very hard year it was, but so worth it in the end. Let me start by saying how knowledgeable, trusting, and sensitive Dr. D is. She is very honest, and does not beat around the bush. This is something I like in a doctor. She told me she could get me pregnant, but it would take time and patience. I trusted her and I am so glad I did. After a few early miscarriages she wanted to run a blood panel for genetic testing. I tested positive for MTHFR. This was a huge deal for my husband and I. We found out my body did not produce folic acid and I had an issue with blood clotting. Finding out that I had MTHFR gave us a lot of answers. Between MTHFR and my low quality of eggs, we were ready to take the plunge. After being on a regimen of vitamins, acupuncture, a clean diet and exercise. We were ready, I did my part, now it was time for Dr. D to work her skills. SUCCESS!!! I know this does not happen for everyone and I am aware how lucky we are. Finding Dr. D was the best thing that ever happened for my husband and I. I can honestly say I do not know if we would have our son today had we gone with another doctor.
