Dreamy, incredible and full of awe!…read more This gorgeous opera house is everything. We came here for Simon Boccanegra by Giuseppe Verdi. Disclaimer: I'm not heavy into opera or know a whole lot about them. However, this place was a WOW moment. Being in Vienna, the most incredible, historical, full of life, music and character, city in the world - a visit to the Opera House was needed. We are so glad we did! They have all kind of seat selections, balcony, floor and even standing for a more budget friendly approach. Our little balcony section was awesome though it had a heavily blocked view we were able to hear everything so clearly plus we had the little screens where you can follow along with the vocals. It was an unforgettable experience and so worth it if you're in Vienna visiting. You can also book tours and learn all about the history of the opera house which I think would be fascinating to learn.

Yes, the end of suor Angelica made me cry, haven't seen that kid stunt in another rendition before. I'm completely on board with the modernization of set design, costuming thing that they're introducing, think that's really cool. HOWEVER, and it's a big, big butt: the sound balance was completely off for me. The singers were amazing, the instrumentalists were amazing, conductor amazing but in the middle of the floor seats you almost couldn't hear the vocalists, esp lower parts of soprano. Bass and tenor parts were mostly fine, don't think there were any alto arias. but man the soprano balance was kind of rough. This could be attributed to a lot of things, I know, but y'all gotta ensure that the listening experience is fire for everyone at that price point. Puccini has such amazing ways of building tension and beauty, and a lot of it was lost for me in this (of course, beautiful) wave of lower strings. OTHER than that, completely perfect. ensemble skills (timing) perfect, drama and acting perfect, and I quite enjoyed the set and costuming. The neon signs were a little on the nose tho lol. minor point - what on earth was the fascism thing in Gianni Schicchi it's been two days and I cannot for the life of me figure out what the point of that was. Im all for inserting stuff like that, but don't really know what the sort of purpose was in relation to the story of Gianni schicchi. maybe my media interp skills need to be refined hmm. (does not affect my rating) 9.8/10, unfortunately. came expecting PERFECTION from the Vienna city opera, can't in good conscience give y'all 5/5 when something so big was off for me :(

It was a little frustrating because the tickets had "musikverian" in all caps but the concert was actually in the konzerthsus down the street. Our uber was still outside when we realized the mistake so we hopped in and were at the correct hall in under 5 min. There were multiple performances going on at once and we accidentally got ushered into the wrong area. If you don't speak German give yourself plenty of time to find the correct hall. The concert we saw was open seating with no bad seat in the house. The room was small enough that you could see all the musicians very well. There was a brief intermission which served drinks and lite snacks. The program was one euro. Highly recommend so that you can follow along!

"On the Ground Floor and First Floor" by Johann Nestroy was playing at the Volkstheater. Although it was completely in German (a language I do not speak), the play was wonderfully costumed, acted with fantastic music. The Volkstheater is perhaps the most beautiful theater I've ever been in. The old playhouse layout, the side loges and adorned balconies are reminiscent of my idea of a "Mozart-era" venue (although it was only constructed in the late 1800's). In the winter, they do have the heat cranked up pretty high (as is the case in most places in Austria/Germany in the winter), so expect to take advantage of the free (and mandatory) coat check.

The acoustics are great and though it is large with three tiers, its design makes every seat feel not that far from the stage. I have seen so many shows here over the years but the latest new musical - Don Camillo und Peppone - is one of the best ever. The famous characters from the popular books by Giovannino Guareschi come magically to life and are supported by exceptionally tuneful music and clever staging including a thunder storm. Don't miss the cool action on stage during the intermission, I can guarantee that you will def leave this musical and theatre feeling happy and ready to hug everyone you meet in the streets!

I initially had some trouble booking this too far in advance. The site kept telling me that there…read morewere no tickets available, but it wasn't clear if I was trying to order them too early (several months out), etc. Eventually I must have entered the active window as I was able to see dates / times; this was probably 2 - 3 months before our trip. Your options for seeing the Lipizzaner horses are, IIRC, a live show, an exercise / rehearsal session, or a behind-the-scenes tour. Prices go down and flexibility goes up as you progress through them in that order. Giving our schedule, I opted for the tour. You also have to pick your language at booking time, which makes sense. You are given a specific time for the tour. The venue is in the Hofburg complex, in the same 'tunnel' area where you can buy tickets for the Sisi Museum. The entrance for the Lipizzaner events is across the road. It is not that obvious, but they had a TV running video of the horses, so that helps. There is a desk where you check in and then you wait in a lobby area for your guide while the rest of your tour party assembles there. They have informational displays about the horses in this area. Our tour started with seats at the main performance arena. The guide went over the history of the place, how things are run today (i.e., how you become a rider, etc.), where the horses come from, etc. It was interesting. The arena is fairly large. We then progressed to check out an adjacent training pavilion just outside. After that, we crossed under part of the building and across a road to a courtyard where you could actually see horses peering out of some stalls. The guide would stop occasionally to continue his narration and to answer questions. We then entered a large room where they stored bridles and saddles for the horses. You were free to take photos up to this point. However, you cannot take photos when in the enclosed area with the horses. We spent a few minutes in close proximity to the horses. The guide discussed things like how they varied in size and how their color evolved as they aged, plus how their naming represents their lineage, etc. We then emerged back into the courtyard where the tour concluded. Here, you are just a couple minutes' walk from where you started. There is also a small gift show nearby if you are interested. Everyone in our party enjoyed the tour and I was glad we booked it. Recommended.

No photography or video allowed of the horses, even in their stalls, although I've seen posted pictures from attendees. Actual performances are on Saturday and Sunday evenings, and start at 108 euros, with price depending on seat location. If you are seated in the cheap seats in the upper tiers be mindful of obstructing support beams. The cheapest seats are for standing room only. A 1 hour show, but much of it is of announcements and historical background talk, before the arrival of the horses. Got to buy these tickets in advance online. Training sessions are 30 minute slots of 5 horses walking around along the edges of the arena, starting at about 16 euros, from 10am to 12pm Tuesday through Friday. We arrived on a Wednesday too late to see the training session, and forked over $18 euros to see a tour. We first went to the empty arena, where the horses do their practices. No practices and no horses to be seen just a vacant lot. Went over to the stalls where the horses were housed. Just look like any other horses and you we're not allowed to take pictures. Finally went to a small museum where horse saddles were displayed on the wall along with associated commemorations. Complete waste of time and money. Could have been worse. My fellow travelers on the Viking Grand European river cruise paid $90 per person expecting an actual performance when signing up months in advance, but getting only a tour.

I NEVER like going to the Drachengasse Theater as it feels old and dirty, as it is so small and old…read morethat you just have the feeling lots of stuff has happened in this place over the years, which this feeling is a good one. It is run by chain smokers so everything stinks of smoke with is not the nicest feeling to have, but luckily i go only once a month here, if it smelt better i would go more often. But of course i go here only for the shows they have, not for the theater itself, i would much prefer to go to another theater to watch the same shows of i could.

I go here a lot as the Drachengasse puts on avant-garde shows in German, English, and sometimes French. Tonight was the annual "Pay What You Wish" European Night of the Theatre in Austria ... and the Drachengasse was one of many venues in Vienna participating in this yearly event. I chose to attend the Drachengasse Theater as they were doing "Oder Nicht Sein" in German. Last month I saw an awesome musical here called "Tick,Tick, Boom" about a starving young writer trying to make it in this world. It was in English. It really hit home!! There is also a cabaret-type theater at the Drachengasse in addition to the main theatre that has a varied program (Spielplan). A couple of years ago, I attended a unique concert in that small space which I still haven't forgotten - believe it or not it was Viennese-Brazilian music sung in Wienerisch and Portuguese.....def cool. So anyway keep the Drachengasse Theater and its offerings in mind for a fun night out in Vienna .... and THANK YOU Drachengasse Theater for your "Pay As You Wish" performance tonight. That fit into my budget ... and I loved the show!

Unbelievable! She decided to leave the tour and go downstairs as she could not climb more stairs, and they pushed her to keep going up! She did not, I complaint and they just did not seem to care.
