First stop was Matlock - cute little village, powerful river flowing though town, nice views all around. We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special. The cakes on display looked so inviting and its the first time I've seen cornflake cake since I was at school! As it was breakfast time though, we confined our menu choices the wide variety of breakfasts on offer, from toast to the requisite Full English. We plumped for scrambled eggs and poached eggs on toast, well presented and freshly cooked, but just a little under-seasoned. It didn't really matter overly though, listening to the radio, in comfortable surroundings, revelling in the fact that we were on holiday, more than made up for it. The Orangery is the better of the two, but the Cavendish is definitely a close second. What we liked: the ham and tomato chutney sandwich, the smoked salmon and lemon & chive creme fraiche sandwich, roasted vegetables tart, goat cheese tart, cherry scone (could be warmed up though), lemon and rhubarb posset (so wonderful and refreshing), and the chocolate and raspberry tart. Misses: the egg mayonnaise and cress sandwich (no egg, just mayonnaise really), and the glazed pineapple savarin (too soggy). If you want champagne with your tea, that is an additional GBP 8.5. I had a glass of Prosecco at the Bubbles Bar for only GBP 6 an hour before our afternoon tea reservation, so it's a better value having your bubbles outside! My friend and I both chose lighter teas. I had the Oolong and my friend had the Nilgiri from India. The Nilgiri was the better of the two. Thanks to the hostess for accommodating us half an hour earlier than our original reservation. This gave us more time to enjoy our tea before closing.

We sat in one of the backrooms which was very cozy and inviting, albeit a bit noisy from a rowdy group of "ladies who lunch," but it was fine once they left. We all really appreciated that savory items were included in the the afternoon tea. The menu features a selection of sandwiches, savouries, a cup of soup, a bucket of chips, a selection of cakes and a mini trifle. Plus your choice of a pot of tea or cup of filter coffee. I was happily surprised at the wide variety of teas! There was ample to eat. My husband and I ate our entire afternoon tea, but everyone else in our group had a few sweet treats left to take home. The food was very delicious. I loved the little quiche best along with the soup served in a cute tea cup and saucer! Plus, the little basket of chips was a nice touch! Scrumptious! Also, it's just 14 pounds for Afternoon Tea which I think it a great value for such a delicious savory tea. Afterwards, my family browsed the farm store and boutique which featured a lot of cute country style home goods and seasonal produce and artisanal food items. I was introduced to Black Pudding, an acquired taste for even the English- pigs blood and intestines mashed into a hockey puck. I have nothing to compare it to but a taste of it was good for me. It was crispy, soft like pudding and a bit sweet. I opted for the tuna panini which was terrific. I read it came with chips which I figured were fries but got actual potato chips which was fine I guess. Michael said his All Day Breakfast was spot on except for the sausage which he described as cheap or watery. The other lads said there's were fine and devoured it spite being hung over. Before breakfast I asked to walk past the gates to witness the sprawling fields. I was welcomed with a bit of apprehension and took a few photos as you may see. Apparently no one asks to go back into the farm. I breathed in the cool air and appreciated the beauty of the English horizon. I was met by the owner, Bill Williams, in a tractor who stopped me to have a bit of a chat. He is a funny man when he said the view was "alright" and there wasn't much to see. I learned the farm was 400 acres and how he had a kick travelling the California coast line several years ago. When I return to Chester I will be sure to come back and eat here and say hello.

This place serves real traditional Austrian food, sausages, sandwiches and soups as well as the best apple strudel I've ever eaten! The aesthetics are super cute, cuckoo clocks and paintings of Austrian scenes on the walls as well as traditional music playing in the background. Super friendly staff, amazing food (if a little expensive, but its totally worth it).
