If you're thinking about going wine tasting while in Barcelona - go to Cavas Codorniu! It's only 45 min drive from the main city... and totally worth it. Their tour that includes a train/trolley ride through the underground caves is so fun, impressive, and all in all, very informative. The grounds of the winery are gorgeous, after the tour we hung out in the garden, where we had lunch and more cava. All staff was very nice and attentive the guests. I felt that the pricing of the tour and wine were reasonable - I remember paying $18-20 for a bottle of delicious Cava. Nothing like the Sonoma/Napa prices! Heck, even lunch was fairly priced, plus you get beautiful views of the mountains and the winery. FYI: there are other wineries to explore in this area. also, the Monserrat monestary was only a 45 minute drive from Cavas Codorniu. read more

One of the best things you can do if you're visiting Barcelona is take a day or a 1/2 day trip to Sant Sadurni d'Anoia. When you get there, be sure to make Codorniu one of your stops! First, you'll need to call a taxi upon arrival at the train station in town. We were not prepared for this and it was a headache, so just make sure you have that number in your phone ahead of time. The train and taxi are well worth the trip once you get there. Codorniu is a cava lover's oasis. Not only is the property picturesque and historic, but the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. After touring the stunning grounds, you'll get to take an underground tram through the property. Eventually, you'll arrive at a tasting room where you can try several of their cavas. It's basically an adult playground and I can guarantee you won't regret your visit! read more

I would be lying if I said I didn't absolutely adore and I was hashtag blessed to be in cava country in Spain. However. I found that the website and info to this paritcular winery was a bit misleading. The website listed there was a special bus from three different areas in the city to the winery - but that bus did not exist. Or we couldn't find it. We got lucky and got some train tickets out to the stop. About 35-40 minute ride. BUT THEN we had to walk along a highway essentially to the winery. It was about 2-3km from the train station. Not for the faint of heart to make this walk. When we got to the winery and asked about the bus they said it didn't exist. I'm not sure why this was on the website but it was a bit frustrating. Now for the tour - after the initial buzz of being ok a gorgeous vineyard wore off I began to get a little annoyed. First, we got there a little early and wanted a quick coffee and snack. The man behind the counter was quite rude to my boyfriend who started off by speaking English and not Spanish. I would have been okay with this if the man wasn't just speaking English to someone before we walked up. The worker handled his wanting us to speak Spanish very poorly. The tour starts with the most pointless 3D movie I've ever seen. Onto the most pointless mini golf cart ride. And then finally we get to something kind of cool and get to go into one of the buildings that will lead us to the cave *yay*. We get a history lesson, see some photos, see some bottles and move down to the cave. Our guide was quite friendly and spoke well enough English for us to enjoy the tour. The caves were cool and we got to go on another ride on a mini golf cart train. Finally we end the tour with two glasses of cava. However nothing was really explained about what we were drinking. What an amazing winery just outside of Barcelona! My husband and I are members of Artesa in Napa, and this is a sister property. We obtained a private tour on a Monday at 11:45am, which started off with a quick video regarding the history of the winery, and followed with a walking tour of the property, caves, and rundown of the Cava making process. We ended the tour with a tasting, and a purchase of 6 wines shipped to us in the US (shipping was only $94 - not terrible considering a small box runs you $140 from Rome). To arrive was quite tricky, we took an Uber there, which ran about $95, and to return, we took the train from the Sant Sadurní station back to the Arc de Triomf - took about 25 minutes to get there walking, cost about $4 to get back to Barcelona and ran every 30 minutes. Overall, pretty amazing, would recommend allowing enough time for the train and walking if you're going to do that round trip. My husband and I would have preferred to do that, but we would have missed our appointment at 11:45am since the train took a long time arriving at the station. read more

Absolutely gorgeous venue; perfect for a banquet of 1,800 business partners to celebrate in Spain! Of course the Cavas are top notch and all the other wines served were delicious. I was also happy with the food. We had a good salad, amuse broche, fancy meat loaf, and my absolute favorite...the sea bass. It was so tender it just melted in my mouth. I'm drooling just thinking about it. The high vaulted ceilings and carved out tunnels make for some unique and beautiful scenery. With such a big space, our company was able to host a huge dance party that felt almost like a rave with spotlights, lasers, and loud blasting beats. What an awesome night. I didn't want to leave! The only thing I'd do is revisit and take a tour with plenty of wine tasting. DATE TIP: This is such a romantic atmosphere your date will also not want to leave. But that's okay, you can drink Cavas and dance the night away to your heart's content. read more

I love Cava. Actually, I like prosecco too. And champagne. In fact, I like pretty much ALL sparkling wines (with some notable exceptions including that headache inducing sweet, cheap Asti Spumante). I'm a sparkling wine kind of guy! Guess you could say it matches my personality! But I especially like Codorniu cavas and almost always have some in my wine cellar at home. So when we planned our visit to Barcelona I made sure to book a trip to the Cava caves of Codorniu. It's only a 30 minute train ride from Barcelona and it is SO WORTH IT! Yeah, I know, there's a Freixenet right at the train station in Sant Sadurni but it's not my favorite. So it was worth it to take the short cab ride up the hill to Codorniu. So glad I did. What a great place!! We got a tour of the spectacular grounds, of the extensive underground caves, learned about the history (18 generations of the same family since the 1500's!), how its made, bottled, corked, and stored. The caves have over 80 million bottles in storage, aging to perfection. With dozens of kilometers of hand dug tunnels, its quite an impressive sight! And the tram ride through the dark tunnels was better than most amusement park rides. After about an hour of interesting info and touring, we arrived at the tasting room. And wow, what a fun time that was!! We got to taste some cavas that you can't get in the US including a Brut Natural (no sugar) and a pinot noir grape version that was awesome! You can buy some in their shop at the end and of course I did. Hey, I needed some for the hotel! If you find yourself in Barcelona, make sure to visit. The tour & tastings at Codorniu ranks up there as one of the coolest things I've ever done on a vacation! First of all, I love and regularly consume their Cavas. They produce a truly delightful product and as I discovered during our tour, they've been producing Cava since Michelangelo painted the Sistene Chapel. A long time! Needing to control the temperatures of a sensitive product like Cava in a hot climate required the building of underground Cava Caves before climate control became possible. There are several kilometers of underground corridors and tunnels to tour to see how things were done in centuries past. The employees used to enter the caves back then carrying candles to light their way. We even got to ride a tram at one point through the caves before our tasting. My husband and I said it was even more fun than something Disney could do! And then the tastings! Sampling their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Cavas was extraordinary! You can't just walk into most stores in the US and get those. Amazing fun indeed! read more

Founded in 1515, Cavas Codorniu is basically a grown up Disneyland - it even has a tram ride! I recently visited with a conference group to learn more about this family owned winery. Our tour guide was phenomenal, and I loved hearing about the loyalty that employees have to this business. Our tour guide has worked for the winery in various roles for over 20 years, and when I asked him if that was common amongst employees he said yes. Most started working for Codorniu because a family member also worked there. I love to see family businesses treat their employees like family, which is evident from their retention. We learned about the process of making cava and toured through the old production building. We even got a tram ride through the wine caves! It was so cool! Most of Codorniu's grapes come from independent growers. We were lucky enough to get to have a tasting in the family's previous private residence. Although the family has not lived in the home since the 80's, it was wonderful to get a feel for the people who once resided here and those who continue the legacy of the winery. The winery grounds are beautiful and the wine is fairly inexpensive (think about 40 euros for a really nice bottle). Codorniu does ship wine to most of Europe, but sadly does not ship to the states. read more

Attended Cavas for a catered business event for the top 5% performers of my wife's company. Everything from the food, service, and of course wine was top shelf! The views were spectacular and it felt like I was on location for the next Entourage movie. My favorite dishes were the monk fish and scrambled eggs with chorizo.
