It was a really hot afternoon and our first time back in this town in over 30 years. This cafe was…read morea five minute walk from the shrine and it was just the ticket: two cappuccinos, two Coke Zero with ice and a slice of unwaxed lemon and two sweet crepes. All delicious, it was comfortable and staff were real friendly. The cafe was full of Irish folks with the odd American. We had spent quite a few hours from mid morning at and around the Shrine, Basilicas and the Massabielle Grotto, the heat was draining and we needed refreshments and restrooms. Oddly enough, as we strolled the grotto it wasn't easy to find a cleric around the place - don't get me wrong I wasn't looking for one but the scarcity felt a bit odd to me among the thousands of quite silent pilgrims. For the most part the religious shops were staffed by nuns. We knew we would never return here but had no desire to stay for the nighttime candlelit procession as there would likely be thousands of pilgrims participating and as we were just about to leave the shrine I got a text from my cousin. He knew we were at the Massabielle Grotto and had cause to require me to do something for him. It kept us there about an extra hour and I was able to do what he wanted. Lourdes itself is scenically beautiful, in the Hautes Pyrénées Department, nestled in the foothills of Les Pyrénées. It has a thousand year old fort, a glacial lake, thermal spas and Pic Du Jur - a funicular railway. We were staying in Pau with spectacular views of the mountain from our hotel window which delivered stunning thunderstorms while we were there.

My husband and I visited this chocolate shop located in Tarbes. They also have a second location in…read morePau. I had read about the shop in the local paper when they received one of the highest ratings in France. They are also a member of Relais Desserts. The shop is lovely. You can pick from approximately 40 chocolates and make either a 28 piece or 40 piece box. The flavors run from the traditional to the exotic and they are all delicious. My favorites are coffee, maïs (sort of like popcorn), and passionfruit. Cookies and chocolate covered orange pieces are also available. The shop clerk was very helpful and friendly. I will be returning there at the end of the month when I have another appointment in town. The chocolates are a wonderful treat (and I imagine that they would make a nice gift for someone too)

The store is well located right off of the highway in a shopping center with several stores and an Intermarché gas station. I was very pleased to see the sushi station. This is the best supermarket sushi I have had since I have been in France. The rice was properly cooked, sashimi well sliced and the salmon was rich and buttery. The fruit and vegetable selection is abundant, as was the fish counter (poissonerie). The store is well staffed and there was a minimal wait at the check out. Lots of covered parking available.

In this case, it was a wet December stumble through Paris, wet and cold and happening upon this wonderful pop-up featuring La Ferme's wondrously honest family farm offerings. The baguette was lightly toasted with carapace of light crunchy goodness giving up its innards of soft, slightly moist and faintly yeasty bready wonder.   The mi cuit foie was sliced just right, about 1.5cm thick and had a hearty earthy flavor basenote.  There were also delightful and surprising flavors reminiscent variously of black truffle, wet oak, tanned calf-leather and cherry wood-smoke.   The flavor profile of the foie was less butter and more offal, which was a very pleasant surprise.
