Subject: Serious Concern Regarding Treatment of My Daughter During VBS…read more Dear VBS Staff Members, I am writing to raise a serious concern about an incident that occurred today involving my daughter, Abigail Musser, who is in the Red Class. Abigail came home in tears after being mistreated by several of the teenage volunteers in the Snowflake Room. According to her, the teens were discussing food allergies and began making cruel jokes. Abigail has a mango allergy, and she was understandably frightened when they said they were going to make a mango pie and smash her face in it. That kind of behavior is completely inappropriate and unacceptable--especially from those entrusted with the care of young children. Trying to distance herself from them, Abigail went to play with the Snowflakes group but accidentally bumped into one of the teen workers. Instead of responding appropriately, this worker grabbed Abigail by the wrist, got in her face, and told her, "If you touch me again, I'm going to hurt you." Later, when the children were gathered in the main room waiting for pickup, Abigail and her friend Olivia--who is a member of your church--were playing together when the same teen volunteers approached and pushed them apart, telling them they couldn't play together. I am not a member of your church, but I have attended Vacation Bible Schools since I was a little girl, and I now bring my daughter to multiple programs across Knoxville each summer. What happened today is not only troubling--it reflects poorly on your church and the values being modeled by your youth volunteers. When I trust a church with my child, I expect her to be safe, respected, and treated with kindness. If this is the behavior you allow from your teenage workers, I'm afraid it damages the credibility and reputation of your congregation. It's smaller than some Cathedrals and the architecture and stained glass are quite stunning. I felt drawn closer to God. My husband and I try to attend mass when we travel. We are visiting our daughter in Knoxville. We chose St John Newman because it's the closest Catholic Church to where we're staying. I think every Catholic should visit Catholic churches when they travel and should certainly visit Cathedrals as often as possible. It's amazing what you can learn about the differences in the parishes. It's an important part of our travel. A few times we have been invited to breakfast or similar events afterwards. Once in Taos, New Mexico during the Christmas season, we were invited to a festival which included a feast. We got to experience the culture of the parish.

This morning marked the third time I've attended a Silent Quaker service. There's something…read morespecial, a calming, tranquil setting and experience. The Quakers are very welcoming and inviting. I've discovered no two meetings are ever the same, no telling what message the spirit may prompt from worshippers.

I grew up in this meeting. A refugee from the Christianity around me, I sought something that was…read moreradically different and challenging. I found a humble, small community that was not quite what I read about in the history books. The passionate sermons about turning inward to the light of Christ, the quaking, I didn't hear or witness any of that. Instead was a community of people each seeking to find and know that of God within them and each other through study, silent worship and activism. Not everyone is an activist at West Knoxville, but Friends support each other in the work they do. I was amazed to learn how many Friends seek to integrate their spirituality and their work lives. People are tender with one another here, and look out for each other. It's like a big family. I moved away to go to college and only come back to visit family in the Knoxville area. When I do, I try to make it to meetings here. Also, after leaving Knoxville, I stayed a Quaker, sometimes going over with the Evangelicals or other kids of Quakers far different than West Knoxville Friends. They provided me a solid foundation that has lasted me 33 years. I only give a four because they have a super small young people's group. So it's usually one or two Friends who tend to the kids while parents attend meetings Still, the kids can feel more a part of the broader community here than they might at other churches. Parents have been negligible in consistent attendance in years past, but for a while there was a strong program.

I have met several members of this church and they are very inviting and caring. No discrimination no matter race, color, or gender. I feel that if every community had a church congregation with the same morals and values as Spurgeon chapel, it would only make for closer community.
