Awesome adventure off the beaten track! We had heard that there were some amazing Cenotes in Homún that were not very commercialized - and we were not disappointed. Our adventure started by driving into the center of Homún where we were approached by two local Mayan guides - Rosendo and Carlos. We had only very limited Spanish and the guides spoke only Spanish and Mayan, but it became obvious that Rosendo was a great communicator. So we decided to go for it and our party of six adults jumped into their motorcycle driven transportation and headed out of town to the first cenote - Canunchen - which was our favorite. We climbed down steps to a platform that was surrounded by the clear water of the cenote, about 25 feet below ground. As we stepped down we passed by the twisted roots of the Alamo tree that drank from the cenote. We spend nearly an hour swimming in the cool water - just us, our two guides and a few bats. We then went onto two more Cenotes, Bal Mil and Hool Cozon, which we also had to ourselves and were equally memorable. In summary, this was a great experience and I recommend that you visit before it becomes too popular. read more
