You know the theory of dating up and dating down? That whole, reacher/settler thing in…read morerelationships? Well, sometimes I apply that to the businesses I support. For example, places like the Brooklyn Warehouse and Two If By Sea, make me feel like I'm becoming cooler just by association. Standing outside of Willy's waiting for poutine while its still daylight out? Still awesome, but yet, I draw just a wee bit of shame from it all. I'm adding haircuts at Saint Lou's to the 'dating up' column of local stops that I make. I've had a long love affair with my go-to hair place but c'mon...at a certain point a guy needs to admit that he can't afford $55 (with tip) every three weeks. So, when faced with the scary choice of new hair help, I decided to take a leap of faith and go with the one that all the cool kids are talking about. A wee space in the Historic Properties, Saint Lou's oozes cool factor. A gorgeous guitar and rotary phone share one wall, black-and-whites of Elvis in a barber chair and vintage gear hang on the other, and a single chair sits in the middle of it all. The main man himself, Rob, is bringing barber back with these sweet digs that have tourists and locals alike stopping to take pictures. No really - that happened! Now, a couple of things: 1) It's cash-only so come prepared. If you don't? Well, no big deal actually. Rob insisted I get my cut before running off to find a working ATM which was really helpful especially since the one in Historic Properties is usually bunk. 2) There are no appointments. "What? No appointments? That's crazy talk!" Yes. At first I would have agreed with you. But hey - no appointments means you can just pop in whenever...and that's actually pretty awesome. I showed up, I sat down, I left looking awesome. It was that easy. 3) While Saint Lou's definitely goes for the barber vibe (and succeeds), let's get serious and remember that Rob spent five years at Spirit Spa and the past three years working in Australia. This isn't just a buzzcut destination. You're working with a pro. 4) Yes - the rumours are true. Cuts at Saint Lou's ($27 for a full deal, but there are options for quick clean-ups in between cuts) come with a drip coffee from Two If By Sea down the hall or a beer if you feel so inclined. Which. Um. You obviously should. This one's a winner, gents!

Spent the entire experience with hair on my face in my eyes and mouth which made It more of a hair waterboarding then relaxing morning at the barber. barber admitted she worked at first choice before Tommy's and the quality reflects that, find it hard to believe they have any training cutting men's hair or cutting beards.

I was so…read moreimpressed by the job they did and the atmosphere and customer service that I decided to start coming here for my haircuts. My first trip to the chair was FANTASTIC. Naomi cut my hair. I usually just do a boring combover to the side. I told her this was what I wanted. However she left just enough hair at the front that it made a slight wave in the front, which modernized my look considerably without being outlandish. I was convinced I had found my new barber shop. Sadly my second experience was awful. Naomi was on maternity leave and I had to explain to another girl what I wanted. I don't remember her name but she screwed things up pretty badly. To be fair, I didn't even know what razor number I needed or how to properly describe the kind of cut I wanted. However after about a minute of description she very confidently said "I know EXACTLY what you want". So I trusted we had hashed out a plan for my hair: same style as what I currently had but shorter and with enough in the front to do a little wave. She was extremely slow, taking at least twice as long as any haircut I've had in the past few years. She barely engaged me in conversation (which I'm not too concerned about as I'm not a big talker anyways). However when we did converse she seemed really spaced out. After we left the shop my friend said he noticed her eyes looked a little red and glassy. I'm not sure if that was the result of fatigue or something...else. In any case, by the time my hair was finished I looked like James Dean! There was way too much hair in the front and I looked utterly ridiculous! So I asked her to take off some of the excess length. I looked at the end result again and still not what I wanted. At that point I abandoned my original plan and just asked her to make my hair uniform but with the ability to still comb it over normally. The end result it that while 80% of my hair can be combed over, there's a part in the front that sticks out and up. No amount of product can correct it either. I was just done by this point and thought that perhaps I could learn to live with it. I left without tipping, the first time in my life I had ever done that. To be fair, I will say again that I'm not the best at giving directions when it comes to my hair. However I have really good hair that's very difficult to screw up. And I've been equally as vague with hair stylists in the past and they've still managed to give me a semi decent haircut. Either this person was new, lousy at haircutting, or (and I hate to accuse anyone of this) possibly a bit stoned. I plan on going tomorrow to have someone else correct the mistake. In the end I may go back to a style I had years ago which was slightly spiky and combed back if they can't salvage what I have right now. I'll update this review once I do so
