I have often walked on the pedestrian side when jogging/walking on the Bay walk. It is a bridge where you meet all sorts of people at anytime of the day. May people jog the 5km run that can start and end at the bridge. Also you meet our local law enforcer who always hides on the south side of the bridge ready to catch the driver in a hurry. The view from the bridge is beautiful. On one side you view Birkenhead Point and on the other side is Canada Bay. The old bridge has a new bridge beside it looking like a new generation of stability.

During our recent several days visiting Sydney, Gayle and I caught a Tram here (twice), took the Ferry to Manly (and back), and took Ferry in from Watson Bay. It was also the jumping off point to our tour of the Opera House and the Rocks. The other cool thing we did was reading the brass plaques recognizing 60 important characters of Australian literature featured in the Sydney writers walk.

Well ... unless you're a…read morebird or a train, the Devonshire Tunnel is the only mobility solution for getting from the Surry Hills side of Central to Railway Square. Though I regularly daydream about being a bird (or a train, for that matter), I'm stuck with these two feet, no wings, and a long tiled tunnel owned by Railcorp. Or at least I think it's owned by Railcorp, because of the incredibly ugly rail-related mural images decorating the tunnel. I agree with Jo - the best (and worst) thing about the Devonshire Tunnel is the buskers. They're Surry Hills standard NOT New Orleans standard, so don't expect miracles. This tunnel is hot and airless, and the art is bad, but one can't help feeling a certain affection for the buskers and the dated tiles. A tip for whoever makes the Railcorp public art: It is never a good idea to run an ordinary digital photograph through multiple "effects" filters on Photoshop and then print it at a large scale in a pedestrian tunnel.

Clomping tiredly to catch my train, I always look forward to seeing who might be brave enough to stand up and busk today. With less of a tourist element than the buskers you see in tourist hotspots like Circular Quay, the ones here range from the talented to the downright oddball all in search of a gold coin or two that you may have to spare. The other day I passed a dreadlocked guitarist with a surprisingly deep voice and an old bluesman with a face that had seen the devil if not made a bargain with him. I've had some amazing encounters here over the years, from a young Aboriginal artist selling her work, to a glorious untrained operatic voice that swelled right the length of the tunnel. Only when you got close could you see that the owner of that voice stood with a white cane; she was blind. Perhaps the weirdest was a little old lady perched on a stool next to a handwritten sign that said 'Virgin Advice'. As I was running late for my train, I didn't get a chance to ask her whether her advice was in regards to maintaining virginity, or whether her virgin state allowed her a particular authority in giving advice. I've never seen her again, I wish I'd stopped.

Well, there are two expensive ways, one that goes underground, and the other one that crosses the so-called iconic bridge. However, While I suspected that there was a free way I theorised that it involved taking a really long way round. No, she pointed out, and proceeded to take me over this bridge. Yeah, it does actually look a lot better than the other one, and it does take a little while longer to get over the harbour (particularly since a lot of others like the idea of not having to pay), but it is pretty handing. The bridge was named for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) who served in World War I. Interesting to see both the flag of Australia as well as the flag of New Zealand flying to honor soldiers from both countries atop the respective eastern and western pylons. Statues of soldiers from both countries also honor those soldiers who fought in WWI. If you visit the Sydney Tower Eye, definitely look for this landmark. Not as famous as the Sydney Harbor Bridge, but a historic and impressive site.

But wander past the Pool of Reflection and up the stairs. Inside a feeling of serenity, and respect take over as you enter The Hall of Silence. Over the rotunda rail you look down upon the sculpture Sacrifice. It sets the entire tone. Off two sides are small alcoves, one with an eternal flame burning. Definitely wander downstairs. I didn't realize there was an entire larger museum beneath the memorial. Several rooms off the Hall of Service take you from World War I to more recent military actions. These rooms house a significant historical collection of approximately 7,000 objects that relay the personal stories of servicemen and servicewomen, and their families. The collection includes medals, badges, uniforms, field equipment, photographs, documents, manuscripts, framed works and books. There are also several screens that run news reels and other footage on a loop. I underestimated how much information was here. Allow almost two hours. Admission is free. Truly a must see.

The trip takes about an hour and is a good alternative to the train.
