The administrator, Steve G., was so rude and unhelpful, he left my father in tears. The temporary priest who performed the service, repeatedly said the wrong name, in the church and at the gravesite, despite being corrected. Steve G., would not allow a reception line, nor guestbook at the service and instead argued that Funeral directors were taking advantage of churches as he spoke over me. He informed me of this restriction two days before the service. The church also didn't allow a eulogy nor any words of remembrance, to be said during my mother's service. When I asked if a few words could be said in Portuguese, on her behalf, Steve G. said, "No!", and suggested that I move the funeral service to a church in downtown New Bedford that offered full Portuguese mass. These experiences with Saint Julies Billiart Parish made my mother's passing even more traumatic. -- Addendum: After this review was posted, I met with the church administrator before an intentional mass for my mother. I asked him that my mother's full correct name be used during the service; Despite being argumentative, he acquiesced and her full correct name was said during her intentional mass.

This church is super awesome!! It is small and there's not much to see, but it provided the…read moresetting for the preacher's Jonah and the Whale sermon in "Moby Dick." Upon entering, make your donation please (seriously, they don't charge admission which is awesome) and take the information about the church. It's comprehensive and explains everything you're looking at in the first and second floor sanctuaries. I love old churches so this was a very fun experience. I think it's great that they still hold services here. Upstairs there is a plaque letting you know exactly where Herman Melville sat when he attended services here while writing "Moby Dick" and a lot of tributary "gravestones" for men lost at sea over the past two centuries. The best part of the upper sanctuary is the boat podium. Shaped like the front of the ship, the pastor gets in there and gives his sermon - a true whaling church for sure! This was my favorite part of the entire museum because it was never there until the movie version of "Moby Dick" came out in the 50s. Filmed in Ireland, the director decided to put this podium in the movie to add to the "whale-ness" of the church. However, people started visiting Seamen's Bethel to see the ship podium and it wasn't there! The church decided to add it to be true to the movie and it was obviously a big success. I don't know why, but I think that's a really awesomely fun story. Get yourself in here to experience what Herman Melville saw and heard while he was writing "Moby Dick." It's a great place to go to see where the actual crews of ships come before they set out to work.

That said, I recently felt the power of Jeebus compel me to pull over immediately and wander onto the grounds of the Unitarian Memorial Church in Fairhaven, MA. What others might call a church, I'll freely dub a cathedral. It's the renegade in me. Gargoyles, massive and intricately carved wooden doors along with ornate iron work bespeckle this Southeastern New England gem. Standing in the majesty of the structure feels analogous to having taken a direct flight to the 15th century. Kings would hold ordinations here. There is no sense of urgency surrounded by such calm and tranquility. The demands of life seem less significant when you're enraptured by such grandiose beauty. The architectural wonderment forces time to slow. But as a practical matter, church tours tend to end before vespers.
