Good use of historical space! They turned the old
city prison into a handicraft shopping mall and it's worth a visit for a couple of reasons. First off, it's an old historic site and has the history on a big poster on the wall. Secondly it's a good place to go shopping. Our taxi driver said the artesian shop next to Praia shopping is cheaper, with a much bigger selection but I felt the prices were only a few reais difference and the store owners were friendlier and more approachable.
If anything, it's definitely worth a look on the second floor to get a good overview of the courtyard and to look outside over the city, the ponte (bridge) and ocean which is an amazing view.
Also at night, they do a traditional forró dance session which is a lot of fun (they give lessons and then open the floor up). read more
