This is definitely one of several places I wished I'd had time to go back to more than once, or indeed, ideally, that they'd somehow decide to open an offshoot in the exact place I live in the US (counterpoint, that that would *suck* for my arteries)... I'm very glad we stopped here while we were in Porto. I'm also glad we managed to find two *seats* together - the place is tiny, and well-attended. It's a bit cramped if you're dining in, but worth it (assuming you can find a seat.) I was also spoiled after the first fried cheese-dog arrived like 2 minutes after ordering it, despite it being so busy - the pica pao took a longer time (not an unreasonably long time), as did the second cachorrinho I decided I needed to get even though I wasn't *terribly* hungry after sharing the first two items, cause it was so good, and I knew I wouldn't be back any time soon, if ever (was fine by me, as I was also enjoying trying a bunch of Portuguese spirits for cheap - 3.5 euro for a decently large glass of ginja, 3-5 euro for various Portuguese brandies... they thought I was weird ordering a large glass of ginja, but it goes *so* well with the salty deep fried food served here.) Cachorrinhos are super unhealthy obviously, being basically a fried hot dog stuffed with cheese, but excellent, totally worth the roughly 5 bucks. The pica pau Americo was also a pretty good value, as a "small" is... not small. I figured I should try both of the things they were most known for - the pica pau was great too, but if I were ever back, I'd probably just stuff my face with wonderful fried crispy cheese dogs.
Cachorrinhos were pretty tasty. I liked the cheese inside. Quick and casual eatery. Pica Pau was way too overwhelming. It's basically a heart attack on a plate, with just pure meat and cheese. The acidity of the olives helped us barely make it through the dish. It was also too salty. I would just stick to the cachorrinhos! The staff member who was checking on the line outside was not friendly. However, the staff behind the counter serving the food were efficient and kind.
Situated on a side street near the picturesque Church of Saint Ildefonso in the charming city of Porto, Gazela is a no-frills Portuguese eatery frequented by the likes of Anthony Bourdain. At around noon (opening time) on a Monday, there was already a thirty-minute queue to eat inside the restaurant, but my party of five was able to be seated immediately if we opted for outdoor seating. There's a large space within the town square with ample seating and covered umbrellas, which would have been much lovelier had it not been so windy! The interior seemed a bit cramped, but reminiscent of a Portuguese sports bar, with pictures lining the walls, and fun wooden countertops. The menu here is short and sweet, showcasing Portuguese bar/snack foods at affordable prices. Two of my companions opted for their Steak Sandwich with Ham and Cheese (€4.90), which came with a small piece of steak atop a ciabatta-like crusty bread, slices of deli ham, and what seemed to be some sort of melted cheese that was mild in flavor, similar to a Provolone. At under €5, this is certainly affordable and relatively filling, especially when paired with a side of fries (€2.70). Another two friends ordered the Steak with Egg, French Fries, Ham, and Cheese (€12) - I ordered this same dish but without french fries and cheese, and it came out to €10. This was quite a curious platter - I'd say there was about 5oz of a sirloin-type steak, and they don't ask you how you want it cooked, so it all comes out to a medium. It's lightly seasoned and tastes a bit of red-wine vinegar, which masks the mediocre quality of the meat. The ham is fine, but just doesn't seem to belong on the dish. The egg was expertly fried with a lovely runny yolk, and my friends enjoyed dipping their fries (which were golden-crisp and warm) in it. They didn't really enjoy the cheese, which was not melted at all and simply just in lukewarm slices on top of the fries. Overall, I assume this would probably be a much more enjoyable dish in the presence of alcohol! You'd be hard-pressed to find anything light or fresh-tasting here (you can order an anemic-looking salad or pickled vegetables for a couple of euros), but that's really not what this restaurant is for anyways. Service was fast and friendly here, the food came in generous portions at affordable prices, and I think that if you know what you're getting into here in terms of expectations (greasy Portuguese bar/snack food), this is a great spot to try at least once, but not necessarily a place I'd come back to.
Since 1962 this has been a booming business! And it's continues to be booming... The wait wasn't as long as expected and it was perfect experience from beginning to end. I experienced the original cachorrhinho from Porto and tried a couple other things. I'm glad I was able to make it here Definitely must try when you come to Porto!!!
This place has been featured on so many food shows and famous YouTube foodie influencer videos that I fully expected it to be a tourist trap. The line out the door and down the street only strengthened my opinion. Ugh, did I want to wait 30min for one hot dog? Well, I waited...and I have no regrets haha. It was one of the best "hot dogs" I've ever had in my life. For the classic, famous item (what everyone comes here for) order the cachorrinho. It should be the first item on the menu. It's a classic, no frills Portuguese hot dog - hot with melted cheese and crispy bread. I can't explain why it's so good, it's just the perfect beer snack. The staff were so friendly and efficient. Definitely recommend stopping by for a quick bite!
Because Anthony Bourdain ate here, it might seem a bit touristy, and there will likely be a line (no reservations taken), but do not skip it. The food is absolutely next level good - their speciality is a local hot dog with a crispy bun cut up so it is finger food. It is even better paired with a cheap bottle of local wine. The menu is small, so when we ordered, food arrived less than 5 minutes later! We waited in line for about 30 minutes, but food came so fast it didn't matter at all. The vibe is loud and casual but in a fun way. The local futbol club was playing the night we visited, and staff occassionally started pounding on the bar and leading the crowd in a chant. Super fun. For two people to have dinner and a bottle of wine, we paid $20! Unreal.
Came here for the Cachorrinho featured on Anthony bourdain. Some call it a hotdog; it's not even close the only thing that resembles a hot dog is the skinny long bun. The meat is an uncased sausage cooked in a panini press then again with the cheese and bread that has a French baguette texture. They bread is incredibly crispy, the cheese so melty and stretchy, and the meat is flavorful. And still under 5€, It's perfect beer food. It's cut into 10 small bite size pieces, so don't ask for a fork. There are toothpicks on the counter so use those if you don't feel like using your fingers. They ask if you want it spicy or not I got it spicy and it was perfect, not too spicy just the right amount of heat. The place is a small beer bar, just a small counter that holds around 10-15 people at the bar and a few seats behind. There is an English menu and they have other items like steak or steak sandwiches. I've seen a few locals order some kind of steak dish they put some of the stout and lagger bears on the steak, not sure what that's about but u might want to give that a try. One of the best things I've had in Porto. Definitely give this cachorrinho a try. Anthony bourdain was not wrong.
Such a cool atmosphere! Very lively and I could just sit here all day, drink beer, talk with people and eat their hotdogs! The staff member who served me was so funny. Came here because Anthony Bourdain did. I ordered one of their cachorrinhos (Portuguese hot dog) with spicy sauce (4.30E) and wow, it was delicious. The bread was crispy, it was oozing with tasty cheese and the meat inside was very flavorful. Great experience!
I understand the hype now. At first I was wondering if I should brave the potential wait to be at the original location. They do have two locations extremely close to each other. I'm glad I went. I ordered one to begin with, not expecting much, but once I had it, I was super happy. It was so good, I ordered a second one, and that's not something I really do. For the price I paid, it was extremely worth it. They aren't that expensive, and they take both card and cash. The cachorrinhos are great. The bread was toasted, and the filling was good. Cheese, sausage, and more. It really is good. After eating here I was curious if they really were the best. After trying other places and their versions of cachorrinhos, Gazela was absolutely top dog. I'll be back next time I'm in Porto for sure.
My partner and I came to gazela upon recommendation from a colleague of mine and we were so glad we did for multiple reasons: 1. The hot dog was amazing - we also really appreciated the way it was served, making it much more snackable than a typical hot dog 2. It was the first place we got to try the super bock stout - incredible! We also got fries which paired nicely with the food and beer, and a small serving was plenty for the two of us! We got lucky and had no wait, but it would still be worth it if we did have a wait.
Gazela was on Anthony Bourdain's list for cacchorinhos, or Portuguese hot dogs, so we knew we had to try it during our visit to Porto. My family and I (party of 6) stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday, close to 8 pm. There are two locations near each other - one has no seating and meant for a quick bite, and the other is a sit down, which is the one we went to. We had the caldo verde (soup), steak with French fries, eggs, ham and cheese, original cacchorinhos, and I think the special steak sandwich - whichever one that was covered in a blanket of cheese and gravy, very similar to the francesinha. The soup was fine, steak was okay but French fries were a bit sad. I also found it a bit odd they just top it with slices of cold ham and cheese. I didn't care for the steak sandwich because I don't like sandwiches smothered in sauce. Plus, I didn't like the taste of that cheese, maybe because it wasn't melted? But the cacchorinhos were amazing. I regret not ordering more because I probably could have finished another one of these on my own. So the four stars are really just for the cacchorinhos. Don't order anything else. Just order a few of those with a cold beer, and you have the perfect meal.
Go for the famous "cachorrinhos," aka little sausage sandwiches, stay for the vibe and the rest of the menu. I'd read about this place online and was glad we went. It's one of those incredibly soulful spots that I feel are, low-key, becoming extinct in big cities, where everything is starting to look homogenized. We queued for about 15 minutes and grabbed seats at the bar. This was with awful weather and before peak tourist season, so I imagine the lines can get quite long. Pro tip: don't head inside just because you see someone leave. I made that mistake and was told to wait for someone to call me over. The people working here have zero sense of urgency, and that's part of the magic. You're in Portugal. Relax. The cachorrinhos were great, but we also had a steak sandwich that was phenomenal. Think greasy street food in a compact, hole-in-the-wall spot. Pair it with a beer and fries, and you've got the perfect lunch. They take cards! read more
What they do here is as it good as it can get. Simple ingredients that are recognizable, nothing fancy served simple but oh boy Oh boy,It was Fantastic. I can eat a lot of these and be happy with a beer . A must try when in Porto. read more
Local favorite no frills meal spot. Cervejaria Gazela is not only where the local crowd gathers for cachorrinhos & beer, it's also where many tourists including Anthony Bourdain have come for an affordable bite. Cachorrinho (€4.70) is essentially Porto's version of the hotdog, featuring a thin Portuguese sausage served with melted cheese in a long toasted baguette. It's worth the long lines outside. We arrived at 8:30pm to find a lively crowd gathered outside the packed restaurant. The line moved quickly and we were seated by the bar within minutes. While you can order local favorites like the Francesinha, there's nothing more exciting here than seeing cachorrinho efficiently cut to bits by the kitchen staff, and then drenched with spicy piri-piri sauce. It's a greasy goodness that goes down easy with a cold sip. We made sure to make another order of this crunchy addictive bite. While the food is good and the staff seem to have a good time among locals, they did appear to have a slight disdain for tourists like us crowding the establishment. But as long as you can put up with the attitude, you can still enjoy the popular food and have a good time. It's a quick meal stop if not just to complete the Porto itinerary. Skip it or hit it? Cachorrinho is a local bite you'll love especially if you enjoy the hotdog. read more

A local ceramics shop manager recommended this spot to me. She recommended their staple franchesinha with an egg, as well as their cahorrino. Both delicious. Definitely more casual, diner-esque experience. Service was friendly and inviting read more

If you're looking for an authentic and delicious local spot in Lisbon- look no further than Gazela. We got there right when it opened and were seated immediately. No frills dining but every dish hits the spot. We started with the local beer on tap- super bock. We ordered the cachorrinho, a local hotdog on grilled bread and sliced up in smaller bites. It hit the spot. We then split an order of the famous francesinha, a sandwich with various meats, covered in cheese, an egg on top, and smothered with gravy. This is a must do in Lisbon and it was so good!! Definitely check this spot out! read more
Went after watching a YouTube Bourdain video recommending the pressed hot dogs. The food did not disappoint. And franchesina was also pretty decent and filling. The staff are friendly and will walk you through options. They also have a somersby on draft that's pretty delicious read more

I genuinely did not enjoy this place one bit. The service was terrible. We were seated in a space where the staff were constantly reaching over us in a fashion that wasn't at all welcoming. They also took forever to get our food and even lied about it being on the way. (The grill is in eyesight so you could see it wasn't true). You get the strong sense that this place heavily relies on notoriety. They did not even try to be hospitable of decent. The food was fine, but nothing to write home about. read more
Genuinely one of the best meals I had in Porto!! I came on a Friday night and there was a huge line outside. Luckily, as a single diner, I was seated immediately at a bar seat facing the outside. If you don't want to wait or are in a rush, I suggest splitting up your group for faster seating. There's limited indoor seating (and no outdoor seating that I saw). The service is fantastic - the waiters are really funny and friendly. I wanted to try the traditional hot dog and also the "special" hot dog, which is the same thing covered in sauce. Both were honestly out of this world!! Crunchy buttery bread, sausage, and melty cheese. Yum!!! I'm glad I tried both. They are actually small so two is not too much food. You can pass on the fries, they're just ok. The beer was great too. I would definitely come back the next time I'm in Porto and highly recommend as a must eat in the city!!! read more

Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Cost to worth it rating: 5 (such a great deal for 2 sandwiches and 2 drinks) Opentableable: no reservations Return worthiness: yes! Eve award: best steak, ham, and cheese sandwich snack Highlights: - Steak, ham, and cheese sandwich: ended up being one of the top eats we had all weekend in Porto. Simple but delicious combo of the thin slice of steak, ham, and cheese served in 2 panini-like small triangles. 5 stars - Green wine: My first experience with it and I loved it. This ended up being my favorite glass of my weekend Porto visit and was only 2 Euro! - Hot dog: what they are known for. Sausage was very tasty and a bit spicy though bun was a bit cruncher than I expected. Nice that it's cut into small pieces for sharing. 4 stars - Fries: fluffy inside. Almost In n Out like but better, 3.5 stars - Atmosphere: reminded me of a soda shop diner with seats at a serving bar area, stools along the front, and tables in the center. Smaller than I anticipated. Lowlights: - Closed on Sundays: we really wanted to get another sandwich! LOVED this spot and would return to Porto just to come back and eat here. read more

The cachorrinhos is small but delicious. It's not what you would expect from a hot dog sandwich. I think the english translation doesn't fit it. The bread is extremely crispy like a light and fluffy cracker. The "hot dog" is not meaty but flat. The sandwich is actually spicy...don't know if it comes from the "hot dog" or from a spread/sauce. I liken it to chili oil. It makes for a great snack with a cold beer. read more

The original purveyors of the cachorrinho and loved by Anthony Bourdain, it's a must visit in Porto. Warm and cozy with friendly service. Crouton crispy bread packed with sausage and cheese and painted with chili oil (you can order non-spicy if you like). It's the perfect snack to grab leaving the Dom Luis after watching a sunset. Bonus if there is a futbol match on - the place gets lively! read more

This late night spot was packed and small with very friendly service. We were immediately greeted by someone who spoke English and handed us an English menu. He asked if we wanted to eat inside (all seating around a bar) or eat "take-away" on the ledge outside. We opted for the ledge so we could enjoy sooner since we had major jet lag. Our beer, fries, and cachorrinhos (Portuguese sausages, in a toasted bun with cheese) were served up pretty quickly. We actually watched the cachorrinhos being made behind the bar. This place was incredibly affordable. The sausage tastes amazing and good, high-quality cheese. Unfortunately, my bun was hard and crusty instead of just toasted on the outside like my husband's, which made the entire thing not very enticing to eat. Fries were fresh, large portion, and well-seasoned. Cold beer that was refreshing and just what the doc ordered after a long day of travels. Cheers to new adventures! read more

There are two locations very close together so if you can't find space at one, you have a second option. The staff was very friendly, this was our first time trying Cachorrinhos and we really liked the spicy one! read more
Cheap cheerful and friendly. There is limited seating, so if you can't get a seat you can always eat by the takeout window outside. This restaurant was good overall. The French fries were cooked perfectly--crispy and golden. I wasn't a huge fan of the hot dog, but the other options on the menu looked great as they were served to nearby tables. I'd definitely come back to try something different next time! read more
If it's good enough for Anthony Bourdain then it's good enough for us. Simple food but very delicious special hot dogs. We also enjoyed the garlic steak with toasted garlic bread. We dipped our multiple orders of fries in the sauce. We were at big group and they were able to put us in one table. FYI. There are two locations near each other- one is more bar seating only and the other is bar/restaurant. Service is impeccable. Most servers spoke English. They were efficient and quick. Make sure to have the spicy chorizo as well. Also enjoy the sparking sangria and super cold super Bock. Very simple place. Still great food. Make room for dessert. read more
So simple but so good. I was not expecting this place to be a good meal because the hot dog looks so simple and not that impressive. However, if you are in Porto you need to give this place try. The line is long, but it was worth the wait. Make sure you get it with the spicy sauce! It makes it so much better! My husband asked for extra and he still wanted more of it! Excellent energy and great staff. Come for the hot dogs and beer. That's why people all come. Have it either the chili oil and don't come with luggage as the place is tight except if you sit outside. read more
