Tell me more about this Cream you speak of: Oh, I'll just show you. My first stop on my first DSM food tour in a decade was Hiland Donuts - and it was the best of the lot. I was so impressed by the delicious fluffy taste and their excellent pastry, that I'm actually making a movie about it (Hilander). Prices are cheap and everything was delicious - especially the apple turnover. One of the best I've ever had. The cream filling powder donut was really good - although their cream filling is extremely sweet - so you'd better like sugar. Wait, are we in America or something? Oh yeah. Not sure why they call it the Heartland. Maybe the Heart-attack-land, or the Heart-disease-land? The cream cornet is also really good. But I'm a little bit biased by the one at Hamada-Ya in Edgewater New Jersey. Also there are really friendly people running this little neighbourhood bakery - so make sure you give it a try and skip the big chains. Sort of like rappers should probably skip the big chains. A local treasure. New owners after the original retired, but they got the recipes for the donuts. Each donut was delicious in its own way. My favorite is the creme filled long johns... My husband enjoyed the round filled donuts. We're trying to watch our calories, so we froze some for later in the week. (My grandma would do this to them when I was little). Some of the donuts were actually better after being dethawed and warmed up in the microwave. I haven't had a cake from there new owners, but if the recipes are the same, then they'll be fantastic! We used the bakery for all our high school and college graduation. Cookies are wonderful, too. Basically, everyone is delish. You won't be disappointed! read more

Less than ideal experience buying donuts this morning. We had some questions about the varieties they had and the employee helping us did not seem interested in explaining or answering our few questions -- there was no one behind us in line. As we selected donuts, they were stacked on top of each other in a paper bag, which made them all stick together. Then the employee dropped the bag and did not check to see if they were okay--just tried to act like it didn't happen. I inspected them quickly and they all seemed okay, but when we got home they were completely stuck together. Donuts tasted great though. read more

This place desperately needs some soul and character! The acoustics can be really noisy and obnoxious when it's crowded. Noise panels in the ceiling would help. Hard to have a convo when families bring their children in- too much noise. I have lived in Des Moines for almost 30 years, but had not heard of Hiland Bakery. My daughter recently brought a box of their donuts to my birthday brunch. I would describe their donuts as THE perfect traditional donut. They are the best example of the raised and frosted donuts I grew up with. Light and airy like Dunkin, but more flavorful and just the amount of frosting. I particularly liked the the frosted cinnamon role with slivered almonds. I gave it four stars instead of five simply because the perfect traditional donut is good but not great. Still, I will be back. Hiland is on my breakfast rotation list. read more

I grew up on the North side of town but haven't been to Hiland Bakery in a decade or so before this year. They have totally revamped and expanded the space!! When you walk in, you have just hundreds of delicious donuts waiting to be eaten. I think the donuts I chose were just $1. What else could you even get for a dollar nowadays? They've also expanded and now offer special coffee drinks. They seemed to have some seasonal drinks but I just went with a vanilla latte. I thought it was great, especially with my donut treat. Have made trip here twice. Their hours make it difficult to give them much business. First time I was there they expected me to know what I wanted without taking a peek around the case. I didn't care for the in-store diners staring at purchasing customers. As for baked goods they were just okay, certainly not worth a cross town special trip. First time as an adult going to this bakery and I am a huge fan. The creme longhorn is just awesome. Now I know why when I a little kid growing up in the 70's my father was such a huge fan of these awesome pastries. I've eaten this pastry from local stores, Hiland's are hands down the best in city. If you're trying to find the best donuts in town, they are here If you're trying to get a hold of them, get there early; especially on Saturday. I almost considered giving them four stars because they're closed on Sundays, but these donuts more than make up for their being unavailable on one of my favorite days to eat donuts. As for the donuts, they are the stuff dreams are made of. The best endorsement I can give is that the types of donuts I don't usually love are just as amazing from Hiland Bakery as my all-time favorites. Jelly-filled donuts don't usually make the cut for me, but from Hiland they are unforgettable. As an apple fritter connoisseur I can say theirs is a thing of beauty.
