It is also a synagogue that hosts Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the basement. Yes, I'm not religious. Neither am I an alcoholic. Yet I find a lot of reasons to visit this synagogue, among them the amazing murals of Louis Pierre Rigal depicting a lion, deer and eagle. And the glorious stained glass that casts an ethereal sunlit glow to the synagogue in the mornings. Go and visit, you need not be religious nor be an alcoholic to find it worthwhile.

Rabbi Pearl and his family set the tone for how to make Shabbat special. I wish I lived closer, I recently moved to Bayside from Astoria. The congregation was welcoming and nice and I enjoyed it when I was there for the summer. I found the garden incredibly relaxing . . . the sounds of the city completely disappear and leaves visitors with the calming sound of the waterfall.

I sent my dad here while on a trip to NYC as it was the closest conservative (actually it's…read moreorthodox) synagogue to the hotel we were staying at. He went for services on Saturday morning, and said there were tons of people there and he was very impressed generally. They noticed that he was new and invited him to roll up the torah, which was cool of them if you ask me. He also reported that the kiddush was the biggest he's ever seen and the cholent was a lot like his grandmother used to make. Overall, the most glowing report about a synagogue my dad's ever given. So, if you're in the area, go. Also, they have an emeritus rabbi who was ordained in 1935 and still attends services regularly. Pretty cool.

The diversity of congregants and heimish style services really makes this a prime choice if you are hunting for the right shul. Sometimes it is packed, sometimes it is small and cozy. But one thing is always constant--great spiritual services and a great kiddush to socialize and mingle with fellow Jews. Scotches, bourbons, chulent, kugels are some of the selections you will find on any given shabbat. The contrast of the old and new, Rabbi Kleiman and Rabbi Shloush, a 150 year old congregation and building, versus an energetic young professionals group called "The L'Chaim Club" just makes this place a must see. It is the last remaining full…read moretime synagogue in Co-Op City, after the passing of Rabbi Solomon Berl and the subsequent closure of the Young Israel of Co Op City in section 1, and before that, the closure of several other synagogues, such as the Co Op City Jewish Center (Conservative). Despite the official name, this shul is Orthodox and a member of National Council of Young Israel, although members of all levels of observance and affiliations are welcome. The shul is friendly, welcoming, and heimishe, a warm place for all to come, worship, and enjoy a delightful kiddush luncheon after services. I encourage all in the area to come and pay us a visit.
