In the meantime, I may just play tennis at the Henleaze Club. I went as a visitor with a friend and only had to pay £2.50. Unfortunately to play regularly you have to become a member which can set up pack up to £118; well worth it if you go regularly, not so much if you go once in a blue moon. If you do join as a member there are lots of things to take part in, they offer coaching, leagues and tournaments, as well as open club evenings. The club has four courts and the club house is newly redecorated.

My one criticism of it is that it is never well advertised and therefore the poor stall holders lose out terribly which is such a shame as they pay so much for the privilege of peddling their wares as this event. They sell everything from pottery to toys to jams to art. They have a great little cafe which sells sandwiches andhot food and wine and coffee and of course tea. A good day out in the dry and the warm with lots of goodies to buy your loved ones for xmas

This is a place parents come on kids parties with a gang of kids who are high on sugar and excitable to the point of explosion. So if you're not the parent of any of these kids and you just want a few games of ten pin bowling with your mates if I were you I'd go late in the evening and you can be the big kid without real kids getting on your nerves. It's a bowling alley - by now surely we all know what to expect - accept that sometimes there maybe a long wait to get a lane at busy times so as soon as you get into the building register to bowl then get to the bar and sink a few and you'll probably bowl better. Last time I went there I asked for the biggest sized shoes - they gave me a size 15. Why? It was funny and they were brand new - no chance of getting a varuca there then!

It can be expensive on the weekend to bowl but if you fancy a midweek dabble and there's a few of you then it can work out pretty inexpensive. It's always worth booking just in case because even though there's a million lanes, you never know in Cardiff. The bar is nice aswell with quite a modern feel to it. It's totally soulless and overpriced as you'd expect but it does a job if you're waiting for a film in the cinema nearby. It's also got some of the nicest pool tables in Cardiff outside of Riley's. I love going here though and it's got that typical hustle and bustle that you always get in bowling alleys. It's the same kind of background noise and fun atmosphere that you get in a good casino, except it's great for kids and you might just have some money left at the end of the night.

The reason why it drops a couple of stars is that you need a SatNav or a very good local knowledge to find the place. Once found you walk up some old rusty stairs and I did wonder at one point whether I was going to walk into an empty warehouse. Inside it is also a bit drab and dreary. However, it was packed and the music blaring out was really good fun. Although I did feel a good 5 years older than most people in there, at least it has given Bristol's youths an alternative to robbery and underage street drinking.

My dignity was also bruised by watching the many seven year olds hurtling around the rink, with the odd trick just to rub it in. Right, so I'm bitter about ice skating, of that much we can sure. I haven't really told you too much about the actual ice rink, yet. It's not the prettiest of things, built long enough ago to seem a bit run down but not old enough to have a particular style. This isn't, I suppose particularly important in an ice rink, but means you certainly don't get the same experience as you would at some open air places. The flipside is that this rink is bigger and cheaper than other places. When they boom music out of stereo system it can be pretty fun here as well. They do ice hockey ('Bristol Bulldogs', I think ) and synchronised skating, so if you're slightly more talented than me there's plenty to preoccupy you at the ice rink.

It's lovely, a nice big (but not too big) main play area with 2 other smaller rooms, the toys are really fantastic, my 16 month old especially loved playing in the room with the small slides and climbing frames, she loves climbing and these toys were small enough so that if she did fall she wouldn't fall very far and it would be a soft landing. Around the outside of the main play area there are tall seats around so parents can sit there enjoying a tea or coffee and watch the children play. There are lots of snacks hot and cold drinks and things like paninis and sandwiches, I had a cheese and ham panini and it was delicious ! I've been meaning to go to Portico for ages as everyone I know with small children raves about it!…read more My time finally came on Friday and it didn't disappoint. My only grumble came from trying to find some where to park, so if you are able WALK!! I sadly didn't have that option and had quite a stressful 10mins with a screaming child trying to park. Once inside I ordered a coffee and some lunch and found my friends. The menu is simple but nice. I had a panini which was fine and the coffee was really good. The children's menu is perfect and simple. Once we'd revitalised ourselves with refreshments we hit the play area. Most indoor play places I've been to have a soft play and a few toys but this is so much more. The play area is full of great toys, there is a whole kitchen and shop which kept my son entertained on his own for far longer than any other play. This is also closed in with seating around so you can sip coffee and chat with your eyes on your little one. Genius! It's 3.75 for the day and worth every penny if you want to meet friends and chat while your child is entertained.

Bowling clubs seem to have a great knack for hiding themselves away in places that you don't expect…read morethem to be. This club is just such a place, literally hidden between Marlborough and Sandringham Road - you don't even notice that it's there, which is remarkable given the size of it. There are both men and women's bowling teams that play both competitive and friendly games. Penylan Bowling Club now also supports the Cardiff Bridge club which meets on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. They have over 150 members, and it's a great social club. Both of these games are usually associated with more mature people, but I there are a lot of younger members here. The two clubs often hold social events like barbeques which often feature live music and dancing, and occasionally include a game of bingo.

The tennis staff are great, very helpful, great fun and during my many years as a member I was always made very welcome, the Racquet Manager in particular (DML) is a star. The club membership prices are a bit too high in my opinion; the café prices in particular are a bit expensive. That said there are some pleasant members at the club and once you get started with the tennis leagues you will always have good people to play with at all levels. Finally, it's only when you leave the club and go elsewhere that you realise the quality of the tennis courts at David Lloyd, Cardiff. There are 14 courts in all (7 indoor and 7 outdoors). Great for playing tennis all year round and I personally loved the indoor courts.
