I was looking forward to having lunch at this spot today. Walk through the door and stood waiting to be seated or greeted or acknowledged. No one actually spoke, but nodded to where to sit and then l waited and waited and waited as they started bringing food. Confused I let them know. I'm not part of this party. I just want to eat lunch. As everyone in the restaurant looked on, I was told to move to another table that wasn't set up. Again, I waited and waited and finally went up to the counter. Got a menu and said I' would like to order lunch. Lady behind the counter took my order and brought me water, again I waited and waited. The group came in. I watched as they served them food, refilled glasses while again l waited and waited. I tried to get someone's attention to no avail. Approaching the half an hour mark, I walked up to the counter and waited to be noticed I spoke to the same lady who took my order and asked where my food was. She looks back at the kitchen and said my food isn't ready. I don't think they ever started it. I told her to cancel it as the same patrons watched me leave. I don't know if this was because of the large group or racism, but this place is not welcoming or friendly, I will not be coming back. read more

A friend asked me if I wanted to meet up with him and his family for Thai food. Unfortunately thats all that happened and there was no meet up. A year after that invite I decided to go and check out the place myself. Chai Thung is refreshing to see menu items that is not the typical pad thai, pineapple fried rice, etc. I saw other items like Chinese broccoli with crispy pork, Crispy trout w green apple salad, and Salty fish fried rice. Every item ordered was delicious. So much that I returned the following week with different friends just to try more items on their menu. They do have a thai only menu. I have been coming here since I was a little girl. Every time I would visit LA I would always ask my grandmother. Can we please go to Chai Thung? This place is definitely nostalgic for me. They have always provided outstanding service. They work super hard and very attentive. It is a small family owned business which is amazing. I definitely support small owned. They work really hard to provide delicious and the best quality food. Here are some of my favorite dishes to order here that are a staple of this restaurant. -Pad Thai Chai Thung -Pet Noi (little spicy in Thai) -Pad Se Ew -Rad Na (Like pad se ew, but with a delicious brown gravy) -Larb salad (beef) -Pork jerky -Tom yum soup -Thai Iced Tea -Thai coffee -Chang Beer (Thai beer) This place can get busy at times, but they were super quick. The place is super clean very neat and tidy. The restrooms are also super clean and neat and tidy, which is a plus. The portions here are very big and absolutely worth the price. The prices are great for what you get. I recommend dining inside. The food taste phenomenal no right when it gets to your table in my honest opinion, I prefer to eat in person rather than to go just because I like the freshness of the food. The outside of this strip mall may make you second guess your decision, but never judge a book by its cover is the moral of this story. We made the drive out from the westside and the food did not disappoint. We were a party of 3, 2 adults and 1 child. We were greeted and seated promptly. We ordered Chinese broccoli with crispy pork, papaya salad, pork jerky, and pad Thai with chicken for the kiddo. 75 bucks before tip and left there full and happy! Chai Thung Thai food is an underrated restaurant. This Sun Valley gem has some of the best Thai food Southern California has to offer - better than some popular spots in Thai town in Hollywood. Here they specialize in Central, Southern, and Northeastern (Isaan) Thai regional cooking. Location: This restaurant is located in the ugliest strip mall I ever seen in my life, but the great news is your here for the DELICIOUS food, also they have ample parking, and it's pretty safe. LOL, at least the numerous times I been there. Basically, if your serious about Thai food you will love this place! It's home style Thai food;however, elevated. Focus is on taste NOT presentation. And definitely your not there for the ambience! Another kinda cool thing is that there is a "SECRET MENU", not so secret if you can read Thai. Ask them to translate (good luck) or bring a friend that can read Thai. I personally ask the really nice owner why they don't offer an English translation for the "secret menu" and he said to me, "it is because the 'Farangs' (non-Thais) won't eat or like the menu". I absolutely disagree!! Another thing worth mentioning is the SPICY levels: it's either Mild, Medium, Spicy, or Thai spicy. I would stick to mild or medium even if you love "spicy". The Thai auntie (chef) doesn't play! Spicy or Thai spicy here can strip paint, am sure. Conclusion : I will boldly say that this is one of the BEST THAI restaurants (top five/5) in Los Angeles area that I been to (AND, the LOW Yelp ratings for this restaurant is absurd...one yelper gave this place 2stars, because they were "thristy" after eating here. WHATEVER!). Chai Thung is reputable in the Thai community. It truly says something when other well-known Thai restaurant owners and Thai chef eats here. This place is in a strip mall near the freeway w good parking. The ambiance is easy breezy and everyone is happy inside. The service was excellent both times the waitresses were cheerful and I got a smile and a wave from the guy in the kitchen. Excellent crab fried rice. Parking is not an issue as restaurant is located in a strip mall. Interior is simple and clean. Most importantly is the food tastes great.
