Accidentally found this place, so we stopped in for lunch on Sunday around 1:00pm. It is nicely decorated and very clean. We were the only ones there, which felt really odd. The server was very friendly and brought out our drinks right away. We got the crispy egg rolls which were delicious, perfecting cooked. We had the Gyoza pork dumplings, these were very good too. We split an order of Sesame Chicken. Nice pieces of actual chicken meat, cooked with a slightly crispy exterior. The sesame sauce wasn't my favorite, almost had a strong catsup taste, but it was better than some places I've had. Went to Chakara last week. Love this place and wish I was able to go more often. They remodeled a while back so the dining room is updated, clean and cozy. It was bustling when we were there which was great to see. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive. She took great care of us. I had the Japan with their delicious spinach noodles. I somehow finished it, and still had room to share some of the sushi my daughter ordered. Her eyes are always bigger than her appetite. She ordered the Pink lady, Mango dragon, and Lobster tango rolls. The sushi here is great and definitely recommend. My wife had the Japanese Teriyaki which I think is newer. It comes out sizzling like a fajita dish and was delicious as well. I know because I finished the leftovers. read more

I reviewed this restaurant about a year ago when we ate in for sushi. We weren't huge fans. We recently needed a late dinner (around 8:30 and nothing was open!) Wow! We were looking for a bite to eat and happened to be near Chakara so we decided to give it a try Service was fast and friendly. We split the lemon grass pepper, shrimp noodles, requesting the homemade spinach noodles and the Maki combo B The sushi was fine, side salad, a bit bland, BUT IT WAS the noodle dish that will bring me back to try more The house made noodles were a great texture and flavor but the sauce over the shrimp was amazing. AMAZING. hands down Chakara is now my absolute favorite sushi place around. The food quality is always fresh and presentation is fantastic. I can't rave about this place enough! The yellowtail jalapeño and avocado ball are now my new favorites! My boyfriend says try the honey sandwich, but we also love the wonton soup! The restaurant is nice and clean and put together, the servers are on point and work as a team, service is speedy and friendly! We went a while ago and Andy the owner was so nice and welcoming, he's a great host! Gotta give him props for the tight ship he runs! Then we went again for Valentine's Day! Highly highly recommend! Why have I not been here before now?? The food was EXCELLENT! We started with the Steam Pork Buns--buns were light and fluffy and the stuffing was savory and delicious. Then we shared a chef special entree: Chakara Chicken over Udon Noodles--the glaze was sweet and flavorful and the udon noodles soaked it up perfectly. My dining partner appreciated the doneness of the vegetables included in the dish (they weren't raw and they weren't mushy). We also shared 2 signature sushi rolls: Fall In Love Roll--1. I would have enjoyed the lobster salad with avocado and tempura flakes that is on top of the sushi. 2. The topping went perfectly with the rest of the roll (salmon tataki, asparagus, and crab stick). Passion Roll--this was my favorite if i had to pick a favorite (nothing was even remotely close to just plain good) YUM Vegetarian options: Clearly marked items as "MV: Make Vegan" As well as a section labeled Make Your Own that is all vegetables--but you can add meats if you wish. Enjoyed the salt and pepper tofu but would enjoy larger pieces of peppers, or more sauce so it could all be enjoyed together better with the tofu. Always eager to sample sushi offerings when I am traveling. We were in the area on a college visit with my son to tour the Eastman School of Music. After a day of tours, information sessions, and a private lesson with one of the esteemed faculty, we were all hungry- so we headed to Chakara Sushi located about 20 minutes outside of Rochester. As it was 3:30 in the afternoon we were the only diners in the restaurant. The decor was simple - but the dining area was clean and spacious. The food was good, with only a few missteps. The tempura appetizer came with two shrimp and an assortment of vegetables. I loved the different veggies- onion pieces, green peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, zucchini. However, the breading was a little on the heavy side- too thick and inside was slightly undercooked. The gyoza were delicious. The sushi was good. Artfully made, with fresh ingredients. Again, my only criticism was that on some sushi dishes the rice seemed either slightly undercooked or maybe it was rice that was sitting for a while- a bit dry and "not-sticky". Overall the food was good despite these few missteps. I would return if I'm ever in the area again. read more

Wow, just absolutely wow. This is the latest sushi restaurant my fiancée and I have tried between Rochester and Syracuse, and of the 10 we've done so far, this blew the rest away. Not only was the quality of the fish superb, but even the cocktails and sake were next level. My fiancée and I both started off with miso soup and I also ordered a salad. The miso was great, but the seaweed in it was a bit rubbery for my liking. The salad was excellent. Though it didn't have the typical ginger dressing, this vinegar base dressing was super delicious and refreshing. My only other note is that if you do both soup and salad, have the soup first because the vinegar in the salad can make it taste bland. For our entrees, we both had the daily catch sushi and sashimi lunch combo with an AAC roll (avocado and cucumber) substituted for the California roll, then I also ordered imported striped sea bass nigiri and my fiancée ordered unagi nigiri (eel) and since they both came with two pieces, we shared them. To go with our meals, I ordered the lychee martini and she ordered warm sake. My lychee martini was expertly balanced between the alcohol, lychee flavor, and sweetness. Not one overpowered the other but instead, they worked together in harmony. The sake was also incredibly smooth and delicious, and I'm not normally a fan of sake. The quality, cut, and texture of the fish, both as sashimi and nigiri, were absolutely phenomenal. Each piece was cut thin, melt in your mouth soft, with exceptional flavor profiles. The rice in the nigiri was soft but held its shape perfectly. The AAC roll was also fantastic, but I do wish they had more options for rolls with multiple vegetables. What was cool was that eating a piece of the AAC roll and then drinking my lychee martini actually made the martini taste even better and more refreshing! We were so impressed by our meals that we went and ordered an additional sashimi sampler and it was just as amazing. Every bite of our meals here were absolutely euphoric. I cannot recommend this place enough, do yourself a favor and go here!!! read more

Recently ordered the Daily Catch Sashimi dinner which I have had many times in the past. This time I did not get the miso soup or the tasty bowl of rice that always came with the meal. In the past, I have received this order in a beautiful fashion on a bamboo plank with flowers, decor, cucumber, lemons, radish with ice and 16 pieces of fresh fish. This time 14 pieces of fish just came on a rectangle plate. The roll I also ordered fell apart which doesn't happen too often either. I'm not sure if they got new owners or a new sushi chef, but for the prices, it's sub par at best now. Hopefully it was just a fluke and they can return to the restaurant they used to be. read more

Salmon and white tuna are thicker. $32 spent on 15 pieces of sashimi with a side of sushi rice. Tiny portion of rice to go with the tiny pieces of fish. The quality of the fish is standard. Nothing special. Ripped me off!!! But it will happen one time only. I paid twice as much as I should have. So visibly skimpy, it was extraordinary. Wow. Do yourselves a favor, just get it from Wegman's. Notice how much filler they had to put in. Ordinarily sashimi is cut A LOT thicker. $32 spent to then have to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich after. Shame on you! Update: I went to Wegman's for sushi a few days later and spent $22 for the tuna roll and salmon. Way more full than $32. Tasted way better too! read more

Absolutely fantastic! Great atmosphere great service and amazing quality of food. I have a very high standard for sushi and this place takes the cake. I recommend any of their specials and the wonton soup is probably the best I've ever had at a sushi restaurant. However the bar isn't that comfortable to sit at, I wish there was more leg room- your knees hit the front of the bar but that's okay, there are plenty of other places to sit. If you are a sushi lover I highly recommend this place ! You won't be disappointed. read more

I didn't have any expectations coming into this restaurant. We arrived just after they opened and were quickly greeted and seated. The ambiance is quiet, clean, and intimate in the dining room and includes a small sushi counter where you can watch them prepare your sushi. You can also watch tv on the monitor behind the sushi bar. The other side of the restaurant has a full bar. I'm uncertain what they offer because I didn't walk over there. I ordered the lunch special of 2 sushi rolls and miso soup for $8.50. We split some green tea, and my friend got a 3 roll bento box that came with miso soup, salad, and edamame. I chose the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls because they don't have avocado (i'm allergic... I know, unfortunate). The miso soup is great. I like how they cut the tofu into tiny cubes. The sushi rolls were filled nicely, flavorful, the fish tasted fresh, and nori was a big chewy. The edamame was fresh and seasoned well. I would return again totry different sushi read more

I am ONLY reviewing the sushi I sat down at Chakara on Christmas eve, for no other reason than I love sushi, and ONLY reviewing the sushi. Chakara is a beautiful restaurant with wonderful service and that's what you're paying for. The tuna lover sushi dish ($20) was a disappointment, just flavorless and cold. Also ordered just a regular hot green tea, which was unbelievablely bitter, maybe try the organic instead? The salmon sashimi ($5 for 2 pieces, pretty high) and sushi was great but it's not like you can mess that up. A green tea, + tuna lover + 8 pieces of salmon came out to $45. Love the authenticity of this restaurant. I often order the dish called 'china' under the chef specialties. It uses traditional chinese spices. It's so delicious! They are best for lunch, their lunch specials are a good deal and include soup. They have a beers around the world option on their drink menu, good value and super fun to try all the different ones. Then an order of Singapore Curry noodles with vegetables, and an order of Pad Thai with chicken that we split for lunch the next day AND dinner the next day! This restaurant is right next to the Budget Inn. It's also the first sushi place I successfully dragged my husband to because it has some BYO protein/carb options. He really liked their plum wine. It tasted like maraschino cherry juice to me. I had the passion roll, which is king crab, spicy salmon, avocado, and cream cheese in a lightly battered deep fried roll topped with scallops, tobiko, and crab salad. It was excellent. What a wonderful lunch!! We came for lunch with a baby and they were baby friendly. Our waiter was so nice, kind and efficient!! Sushi was so great, our 16 month old had cooked sushi for the first time and loved it! We had the lunch special with three rolls.
