I had booked a stay at Perisher Manor earlier this year, paying top-dollar for a season of…read moreunprecedented demand. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown in Greater Sydney, I was unable to go. I notified the property as soon as lockdown was announced for the dates of my stay. They offered to rebook me for the same season (useless with the extended lockdown) or provide a partial refund. They ended up charging me $1,578 in cancellation fees--that's more than enough for a weekend stay even in 2021! Their T&Cs had no provisions for COVID-19, so they made up that policy after the fact (or at least didn't publish it). What is published is that no refunds are offered at all for cancellations, so I suppose I should be grateful. That is if I were to ignore the fact that such an unfair term would likely be void under Australian Consumer Law.

I must admit I was unimpressed when my wife announced that she had booked a week in Perisher at the…read moreheight of the NSW school holidays. Skiing is expensive especially with three kids and the snow can be hit or miss. Sure enough, we arrived to not much snow. The apartment we were staying in was great, even though the stairs were designed for mountain goats. It was comfortable and big enough that the teenagers could find their own space to cope with a lack of snow. It had all the cooking facilities that you could ask for, there was no reason to eat in the Stables restaurant. The thing is that its the sort of restaurant you go to for no reason. It has an early happy hour, with good mix of cocktails but the fun goes on for hours. The restaurant manager had a mix of charm and cheer that made eating there a great experience. On the second day the snow came, then came and kept coming. Each day the weather conditions varied and more snow came. The snow was great despite conditions that were sometimes less than pleasurable. When we finally left and we were all in the car on the way home, the kid's verdict was best holiday ever.

The new owners are great, Bob and Anna really tried to make sure that everything was just perfect. From the pencils on arrival for little miss 2 to even offering to hold our 4 month old whilst we ate dinner. They were really family friendly. Now word of warning: there is a "Kids Dinner" at 6pm each night for all the kids staying in the lodge, you may want to schedule dinner at a different time if you want to avoid younglings. The menu is a Table d'hôte affair so there is only a limited number of options. Two course for $40 and three courses for $50. To help the chef out they ask you order when you book which is a bit weird. The food was great and even though we only had the two course option, we didn't leave hungry The wine selection is great and the house wine is only $6 a glass (again a great price for a bar on snow) In short, give them a shot!

The room was warm, cosy and clean. It has all the facilities you need at a ski resort. It's not a far walk to the snow and the pub is a very short walk down the hill. At the end of a long day of skiing, the Hans Oversnow service will drop you off at the door so that you don't have to trudge up the hill - and this is included in the accommodation costs. There was no Wi-Fi or Internet access or television, but some may consider de-tech'ing to be a bonus. The water pressure was poor, and the water temperature was sometimes fluctuating in the shower. I could live with that and suggested to them that they put in low-flow shower heads to get a proper spray. All in all, I felt my money was well spent. Would definitely stay again.
