I have noticed this shop when I have been in the Southover Grange gardens before, but I had never…read moreventured in. I expected it to be small, but actually it expands down the length of the north wing of Southover Grange House. It is a shop/gallery which sells the work of the Sussex guild, a group of designers artists and craftspeople, whose members live and work in Sussex and the surrounding area. The various artists' and designers' work for sale includes pottery, jewellery, furniture and art. It ranges in price and style, from homey crockery painted with cartoon-y chickens, to elegantly painted silk clothing, to wooden furniture for upwards of two grand a piece. The guild also runs classes, such as how to make fused glass jewellery, or turn wooden bowls, or do quilting. To inquire about courses you can telephone or visit the shop.

This shop/gallery is inside the grange next to the tearooms. There are lots of beautiful arts and…read morecrafts in there. With everything from embroidered cards and pictures, to hats, bags, clothes, gorgeous jewellery, glasswork, workwork (the wooden bowls are amazing, but you do pay for their beauty!), paintings, furniture. A lot of it is a bit out of my price range i have to admit, but its very inspiring to look round and see what people have crafted out of various materials. Its the sort of place that leaves you wanting to go home and make something!

I was a bit confused when I went into this shop. At the front they have a sort of mini-gallery of…read morebooks and pamphlets that have been made either on a printing press, or with relief printing (e.g. woodcuts, lino cuts etc.). As well as the booklets, there is also a workshop space at the back with a printing press. I asked the guy running the shop if he made the art and the booklets at the front, and he said mostly not, but didn't really expand about what he actually did do in the shop. However, since visiting the website, I have a clearer idea. The website states: 'The Tom Pain Press is a not-for-profit educational organisation. It is based around a working 18th-century-style wooden 'common press', as used to print Paine's massively influential pamphlets and books', it is intended to be an educational resource and tourist attraction. The website also says 'Posters, broadsheets, pamphlets and books are printed on the press, which is also used to instruct students of all ages in the complexities of letterpress technology and the crucial importance of the printed word in disseminating ideas.' They also intend to use the press to allow local artists to print their works, It's a pretty cool project, and I think if school kids were allowed to have a go of printing stuff on the press it would be great fun. I just hope the man that I met in the shop is a bit better at explaining to any children on school trips what it is he does than he was to me.

I am biased (the owner is a friend) but I think this is a lovely little shop. You can buy all sorts…read moreof Tom Paine related posters and memorabilia - and art by other local artists. And there's a real printing press! Refreshing in an age of outlet stores selling identical goods.

Until 1975 a parish church, All Saints is now a community centre and home to a variety of leisure…read moreactivities, courses, arts events and performances. History The church was built close to the former Greyfriars Friary, but little is known of its early history. Early 19th century drawings show a largely 15th century church, of which the heavily buttressed tower survives. In 1806 the church was largely ruinous, and a new nave was built by Amon Wilds in the classical style in 1806, with galleries supported on thin cast iron columns. To this was added in 1883 a new chancel and transepts by W Basset Smith and E J Munt, in the Gothic style. The result is a curious amalgam. In 1975 the church was declared redundant and is now in the ownership of Lewes Town Council for use as a Community and Arts centre. The building The exterior survives largely intact, with the tower the main feature. A 15th century doorway to the immediate east of the churchyard on Friar's Walk may be reset from the original Friary. Inside the tower are two kneeling figures, of Robert Hazzard (d1624) and wife, all that survived from a more substantial monument in the 1806 rebuilding. The 15th century tower arch, on octagonal responds, is well preserved. Also in the tower are two 18th century figures taken from the nearby National School. The rear part of the nave retains its original form and some memorials survive on the walls, as well as the arms of George III, but a modern reception and offices have been inserted in the western end. A stage breaks the line between nave and chancel. Practicalities Details of courses and events can be found on the Lewes Town Council website. Access to view the interior depends on what courses/events are taking place.
