I haven't been there yet. Last time I was there with the old owner and then two other owners had it and it wasn't doing well. The outside looks like shit. I think they gotta clean it up and make it more respectable right now. It looks dark you can't see inside. It was a place that people used to go to. They used to live in his neighborhood respectable people Sunday I will go in and do my own survey if they have the chickens yet and if they have the spare ribs, I'll go back or a pizza. I've been going to Champion Chicken for over 50 years through a few owners. I was in the area today looking for lunch to pick up to share with a friend. I saw that it's again under new ownership, so was a bit nervous. I believe it was the owner who took my order; chicken tenders plus an order of fries- $11. Cheaper than fast food and extremely tasty; nice well rounded spices. The fries were obviously fresh. It's not much to look at yet, but I hope she does well so everyone gets a chance to check out the varied menu; standards plus soul food. She was so very nice and friendly. Get in there! read more

Not what it used to be. before the pandemic I ate there almost every week and often had the chicken, it was well ,seasoned , if a tad salty. I just had it again a tonight and it was cooked fine but now has absolutely no seasoning whatsoever. it's now owned by Ashelys BBq, the BBq is excellent and I will keep coming back for that, but I won't make the mistake of ordering the chicken, it's just not the original champion chicken recipe. Ordered to go. Mashed potatoes were cold and the cover not secured so potatoes were all over the inside of the bag. The gravy must be powdered and made with water. It was also cold and completely broken apart. It looked like cloudy water with with floating specs in it. The French fries were under cooked and soggy. The mushrooms also cold and missing the sauce. The chicken we ordered was an 8 piece tub- it should be 2 breasts, 2 thighs, 2 wings, 2 drumsticks. What we got was 1 breast, 3 thighs, and 5 drumsticks. What a disaster. Not even close to the quality of the former owners. We grew up on Champion Chicken. It's so disappointing to see this happen to what was a classic Milwaukee institution. I'm sad to say, champion chicken has been suffering a massive decline since new ownership took over a few years ago. My mom and I - who have been going to champion chicken for decades - decided to try them out for dine in. We haven't eaten at champion chicken since pre-Covid so we thought we would give it a try and see what has changed. Wow. What an awful place. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a restaurant. It's not. It's transformed into a very seedy bar. Most of the tables have been replaced with a dance floor and the tables under the glass atrium have been replaced with couches. They BLAST rap music to an unbearably obnoxious level and the whole place is extremely dim and grungy looking. This is no longer a restaurant - it's a bar and and nightclub that serves sub-par fried chicken. I understand the owners wanted to focus more on making it a bar, but the bar area took over the whole restaurant. Why couldn't they leave half of the restaurant alone so that people who want to dine-in can still have a comfortable, quiet place to do so? It was so sad to see the state of champion chicken. Whenever I have a chicken craving, this is my go to place! Always consistent, hot and tasty chicken. The fries are just standard and nothing to write home about but the chicken makes up for it. The coleslaw is pretty good too. It was supposed to come with custard but it seem to have been forgotten this trip and my prior trip as well. So here's my take on the new owners. It's definitely not the same Champion Chicken that once was. They've changed the menu to be more like their sister store NYPD pizza on North Avenue. There's a little bit of something for everyone. They have appetizers, burgers, pizza, sandwiches and wraps along with salads and soups. I decided just to pop in for some takeout. I went with the Italian sandwich because the guy at the register said it was one of his favorites. One thing he stated that he liked about it was that it came with a side of dipping sauce Aka Au jus. Well when I got home there was barely any au jus in the container to dip the sandwich in which was very unfortunate. He also said that they Giardiniera on it and there was barely any whatsoever. The beef tasted fine and I got American cheese on it but the bread was a little on the greasy side. The french fries weren't bad. I also ordered some eggroll wrapped mozzarella sticks which were quite delicious. I did really like the marinara sauce that came with it. I will probably give them a try again in the future. My husband has been nagging me to go here for years now, and with State Fair in full swing Tomkens was not an option for his fried chicken craving. Champion has a definite split personality. The take out side is bright, decorated with racing pictures and has a few tables if you are waiting for an order. The restaurant side is dark & old - like an up north bar. In both areas things are pretty worn - a remodel/refresh would probably be a good idea. It's clean though. CC seems to be very popular with the older set, and has a lot of regulars. We sat on the restaurant side and found that there's quite an extensive menu - burgers, sandwiches, fish, etc. However, they are called Champion CHICKEN and so we both ordered dinners. For less than $8, you'll get 4 pieces of chicken, a potato, a side and bread. It's a really good deal without question. The chicken was "good" - mostly crispy, nicely seasoned breading, but my breast piece was really dry. I opted for mashed potatoes instead of fries - they're the instant kind which I actually kind of like. The Mister had waffle fries and they are truly good, and I say this as a waffle fry hater. Our server was pleasant and attentive too. They do have beer (some German imports no less), wine and cocktails too. After dinner, we wandered to the take out side to pick up some custard for later which took absolute ages, despite a good amount of workers standing around chatting. Champion Chicken is a solid, neighborhood place to have fried ("broasted") chicken dinner. It is a unique, home-made style of fried chicken, IMO. Not greasy. Good sized pieces. I've never had a bad meal here. The location has a large, carry-out area in the front of the restaurant, separate from the dining room. The dining room looks like an old style, woodsy/cabin like place from the '60's and it probably hasn't been remodeled since then, but it is clean and has plenty of booths to sit in. They also have counter seating. For side dishes, there plenty of choices including but not limited to salads, cole slaw, baked potato, mashed potato and two different styles of potato salad. They don't have a dedicated cocktail bar to sit at, but they do have full liquor service, a plus! Any time I've been here, I've had good, efficient and friendly service from the wait staff. Don't waste your time. Showed up and the dude wasn't even looking at the register. Chatting with the cook. Had to shout to get his attention after 5 minutes waiting to order. The wait for chicken tenders and fries was like 20 minutes with only one other customer in line. We saw someone open some packaging with their teeth after not being able to get it open with a knife. The locals know it, and share this info by word of mouth. They are low tech simpletons and blue hairs j/k. They get the news the old fashioned way by newspaper, and they like it that way. Internet, E-mail? Eh! Whats that? Plenty of beers on draft, spotted cow included. Any homemade Soups and chicken would have been my first choice at champion chicken but this Friday we were going to try champion fish. I had the fish dinner, 3 nice sized pieces of battered fish along with hot tasty fries, coleslaw and roll. I'm not usually a fan of creamy coleslaw but I was surprised since this was crisp fresh and not overly creamy with good flavor. Now the baked fish was a little smaller and the cheeseburger looked good as well. Service was good. Not to busy so I felt like yelping. Since they only had two reviews? Not something I do but Champion Chicken earned it. I place an order at 5:30 pm. Hearing nothing for 45 minutes I call to check status and am told "It just left with the delivery guy." I wait an hour for the delivery because they said they are busy and I call again. (I live less than 5 minutes from them btw) I am then asked 4 times what I ordered, provide my name, my phone member, and address only to be told they don't see it in their system but would gladly make the order again and I should get it in 45 minutes. I declined to pursue a three hour dinner order. It's been over a year since I ordered from them because almost the exact same thing happened last time I ordered from them so I initially wrote them off. Guess time doesn't fix bad service. I'm very disappointed that I felt the need to write this review. We used to live close to Champion Chicken and always liked going there. During this pandemic, we've been encouraged to shop locally. I found that Doordash delivers food for this restaurant. I'd hoped it would become our "go-to" place. Unfortunately that will not be the case for the following reasons after two tries: 1. Friday 2/19 -- we ordered two dinners: my wife I believe had the baked cod and I the regular cod fish fry plate. Her's was to come with the fish, potato and "seasonal vegetable". I suppose another kind of potato could be considered a seasonal vegetable but that was not her expectation. I, in turn, ordered the fish fry which was "ok". 2. Wednesday 2/24 -- we, again, ordered two dinners: my wife ordered the baked chicken dinner which included potatoes and salad. She told me the salad was great but the chicken was over cooked, dry and hard as a rock. She ended up throwing 1/2 of it away as not being editable. I ordered the 1/2 rack of ribs. They were disappointing -- tough and dried out. The description stated that they came with fries, cole slaw (which was very good) and frozen custard. There was no frozen custard. 3. Because my dinner was supposed to come with frozen custard, I did not want my wife to feel left out so I ordered a pint side of frozen custard swirl. Now, I am not a chemist or attorney but I cannot see how that frozen desert can be considered "custard". There are regulatory standards for custard and this seemed more like low-fat, frozen skim milk. Custard, ala Culver's or Gilles, is smooth, creamy and rich. Last night I ordered a "tub of fish". In the past what I got was a take out box that was pretty full, usually 12-14 good sized portions of battered and deep fried goodness. This also comes with a container of tarter sauce and I would say a quart container of fries. They can keep the fries because they usually suck. My experience last night was a half box of fish "nuggets", half a container of tartar sauce and a half of a container of really bad fries. I don't even know if they made it into the fryer. They put the food in a bag and staple it shut, I really didn't think I needed to check my order. I'm very disappointed in CHAMPION CHICKEN as of late. Being a neighborhood establishment for many, many years. I would rather eat "local" and keep my business in the neighborhood. I just do not see that happening. Fast good fried chicken. It's a clean bright place with friendly quick counter help, a comfortable place to wait for your order, and a crazy silly delivery truck (that's what actually caught my eye as I was driving by). There are lots of good fried food places around here, but they tend to have slow indifferent service, so I like the speedy orders here. read more

I think champion is doing better under the new owner. Building looks better and I believe it's in the process of being reformed more. I've been meaning to come back for a while now as it's just down the road. I will admit I was thrown off by the chicken wings I ordered as they weren't the typical bar style chicken wing with plump meat on them, these were literally wings. Not necessarily a bad thing, just different than what they had previously. Definitely not as much meat on the bone though. Still great teriyaki sauce though. One of the most important things about this place is that they have a chicken truck! (see photo) They also have some darn good fried chicken. As good, if not better than any I've had in the state. They cook it in these big pressure fryers. It comes out with perfect, crispy breading, good flavor. My only complaint is they don't have a spicy recipe. I've asked they said they only make it one way. I used to work in the area, and we would come here for lunch. They have good specials on their website, just make sure you print the coupon out and bring it in. Don't ask me why. The rest of the menu is large, with sandwiches, shrimp, ribs, ice cream etc... Their pizza is really good too. It's thinner crust and cut in squares. In the take out area, check out the neat pictures of local intersections from the early 50's. Wait. I can't actually speak to those things -- 1) I wasn't alive. 2) I'm fairly certain fried chicken has never been good (healthy) for you... ...But my goodness it is TASTY. Champion does it right with their 4 piece dinner -- juicy, crispy portions accompanied by crinkle-cut fries, coleslaw, and a small serving of custard to boot. Add a Stewart's soda or a ginger ale and you're sitting in chicken heaven, friends. I'm not a huge fan of slaw-based sides, but this was just the right amount and provided a fresh "bite" other than my teeth sinking into my formerly feathered fowl friend. The custard was a delicious sweet complement to the saltiness of the bird and potato combo; in other words, a perfect end to a fast and delicious meal. I enjoy the history of this place, especially the snapshots detailing the growth of the area (and Milwaukee) over the years. A sampling of old menus (when a chicken dinner was $1.89; holy hot wings!) is a nice touch as well. Though this wouldn't be a weekly haunt by any means (my doctor would have a fit), Champion will be my go-to on the quarterly/bi-annual basis when my chicken craving kicks in. Half of my order was missing. I ordered through Uber Eats. By Third time I opened it the delivery person was gone already. I called a few days later due to the holidays . The person who answered the phone asked if I had called the manager like I'm supposed to know the managers number by heart. All beware.. I was fraudulently charged by this business, have frequented the establishment for years however, the last few years service has declined. I contacted the Better Business Bureau and I am currently awaiting resolution for a charge on my credit card that should've never occurred. I want anyone considering using a credit card with this business to use great caution as my amount was not significant however, the breach is very concerning I have made repeated calls to reach a manager or owner with no returned phone calls or direction. I would give them five (5) stars for their chicken... but over the last half year or so I call concern to their business practices. In August of 2018 called in an order for a Four Piece Chicken dinner with and extra leg and thigh and was charged $12.04. A month and a half I placed the same order and was charged $13.79. It was not so much the increase in the price to which I objected as they had GREAT chicken! I objected that the price price on their web-site still reflected the old price. Some would call that "bait and switch". A few days ago (11 May 2019) I called in an order for the Four Piece Chicken dinner which according to their web-site comes with fries, slaw and a cup of frozen custard. My wife and I were going to share the dinner so I requested an extra slaw. When I picked up my stapled bag of chicken I also picked up one of the fifty to-go menus that covered the counter. When I open the bag at home there was only one (1) slaw and no custard. In speaking to the owner I was informed that it was the fault of the person who maintains the web-site. When I called to inform them of the missing extra slaw and custard, they apologized for the missing slaw, and informed me that they no longer include the dixie cup of custard... despite what appears in the multitude of menus on their pick-up counter. They informed me that they are under new ownership and that the menus were of the old ownership. They did offer to deliver to me the missing slaw, but as I live as far south as they are north that did not happen. This bland chicken with feathers had it not garlic sauce i would have puked all over the smaller container of fries i guess i didn't even bother past one which was the most gross potato flavor i ever witnessed. I ordered a vanilla shake it taste a bit salty took it back and i currently have a sore throat and runny eyes When the guy called me to pick up the shake he grabbed the tip cup so to add to my anger i just spent $20.00 with these characters and that's not all The older clowns in the back saw that i and another of their regular customers were engaged in a conversation about the food which at this point i never had The ole farts had hand on hips/ waist & Had turned 100% of their attention in my direction as if something bad was about to happen .
