My child has attended this school for a couple years now and we love it. The principal is very attentive and thorough. He's easy to talk to and takes all concerns of the parents very seriously. We have loved all the teachers so far too. My child has learned and has grown so much. He loves going to school there. The school is small which I love. There's a strong sense of community there. The PTA is also robust and active in starting new programs and keeping the school safe and fun for our kids. read more

The bullying problems have gotten worse. Principal is so useless in her attempts to get parents and district involved. And trust me, she'll let your kids be a punching bag till those resources decide to roll in... whenever that may be. Literally witnessed her complaining at teachers taking a fun picture on Halloween day, because they took 30 seconds from her unoccupied time to look like they were actually in the spirit of things and happy. God forbid anyone do anything to add some liveliness to the holiday activities. Can't wait to see the SAME songs from the last 5 years (if not more) sang for a the holiday "celebration". Any chance they could move it into the auditorium? How about a play? Their fundraiser pulled in $50k+ this year, for "field trips and activities"... still waiting on that. One plus, they fired that curmudgeon of a nurse. Happy to report that the old one is gone as of 2019-20. The new one seems to be quite nice. read more

I love Chandler ,my boy started there when he was 3 in prek special ed class and he had a great teacher.He is not there anymore but another great teacher came and now my younger son is in the same class! Chandler Elementary School - Elementary Schools Near Me - Sherman Oaks, California

From day one, the PTA and teachers are there to help the kids (and parents) acclimate to the new environment. The school and PTA stress that parental involvement and partnership is the key to a successful education. Having great teachers also help. We hit the jack pot in Kindergarten with Mrs. Truex and Mrs. Miller in the First grade. Both teachers are caring, capable and committed to my son's educational success. They are available by email which is a plus for parents with a non forgiving work schedule. The PTA has done a phenomenal job at raising funds for the PE,Music and Arts program to give every student at Chandler an equal chance. There are many after school enrichment programs (Spanish, Tennis, Karate, Music, Cooking, there are too many to name) . All the Enrichments programs are on Chandler's beautiful campus (play structure, basketball court and track). The principal, Mrs. McIntyre, is always visible and involved. She is well respected among the teachers and parents. I can't say enough good things about the school. If you are on the fence, about coming to Chandler vs. Private school, don't even think twice. Chandler Learning Academy is a wonderful community school that recently became a California Distinguished School and a charter school. I have extensively researched Chandler and other local elementary schools in the area and I felt this school was the best fit for our family. It is a small public school within walking distance of our house and the class sizes are smaller than average, especially in K-3. The principal, Mrs. McIntire, is an excellent leader and used to be the Assistant Principal at Lanai Elementary School in the Encino hills. Under her leadership, Chandler has dramatically improved over the last few years. The teachers are very well qualified, nurturing, accessible and get along with each other and the principal. The teachers with elementary age students send their students to Chandler which speaks volumes about the quality of the school. The after school offerings are top-notch and much better than other local elementary schools because the school contracts outside companies that specialize in their field. The after school classes include: art, cooking, karate, music, Spanish, sports and STEM robotics. The school has an after school drama program which puts on two musicals a year. The school also has three after school programs to choose from, one of which is free for older students, that run until 6 pm for working parents. The PTA is inclusive, receptive to new ideas and works hard to make the school a great place for the students and families. The PTA puts on a variety of events such as Movie Night, Game Night and the Spring Fair to create a strong sense of community. The PTA funds an edible garden project where the children learn how to garden and harvest what they grow. The school has a GATE program for gifted students and effectively differentiates learning. In each grade, students are grouped in math and reading groups to meet their individual needs, whether they need remediation, are on grade level or need extra enrichment. My son has made many neighborhood friends and enjoys playing handball, basketball, soccer (and Pokemon!) during recess and lunch. He is very happy at his school and proud to be a Chandler Cheetah. read more

I love this school I want there when I was little I had miss Terra Billy as a teacher but sadly I needed to leave that school my mom was making us move to the gated part of Bellaire but what ever I had a fun time a lot of friends although the principal when I was there was so rude !! The principal is horrible. Kristine McIntyre is the most unprofessional rude woman I have met in a long time. I have a special needs 4 year old and her staff denied him use of the office bathroom when he came for a 30 minute special education class, She spoke to me in a disparaging manner without identifying herself. I had no idea who she was. She was dressed in a slovenly manner (t-shirt and worn jeans) and another staff member had to tell me who was berating me and my 4 year old. We own a house on Chandler and will be renting this home out so that we can move out of this school district. I CAN'T IMAGINE DEALING WITH THAT UNPLEASANT, UNSYMPATHETIC, UNREASONABLE WOMAN FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR MY BOYS. The rumors are true about her. She is not a good principal. read more

Principal, Kristine McIntyre, has no leadership abilities and lacks a total sense of responsibility. My daughter was in session for 6 months and had 4 different teachers. In that time, the class size was 30-35 students per classroom to one teacher. She was bullied twice: once when hit in the face with a lunch pail and the second, when a child kicked her in the stomach while she was on the apparatus. She had to find an adult to mediate the situation herself, Principal McIntyre, who neither called or sent a note home to inform us. It was not until our daughter complained of her rib hurting that we knew. I called principal McIntyre to seek to understand the situation, who took zero accountability for any of the events. Her only apology was, "I'm sorry you feel that way". Coincidently we received a letter home that week that stated our daughter was reading and writing below expectations. She is now in a private school where she has received 2 student of the month awards & 2 report cards above average. My 7 year old cringes when we now drive past Chandler Elementary. If you want an enriching, safe and tolerant environment, I would not recommend Chandler Elementary to you. read more

After reading all the reviews posted I found myself wondering what school did I pull up? Because the Chandler Elementary these parents are talking about doesn't exist. At least it didn't for us or a great number of parents who have removed their child(ren) from this school. My child attended this school. While the campus is nice & the total number of students enrolled was smaller than surrounding schools, it was NOT supervised well at all! On more than 1 occasion parents had to notify the office of fighting on the grounds while supervising staff were not paying attention to the children they are being paid to observe. This school has a lot of bullying problems that go unresolved. Maintance at this school was an issue too. Due to cutbacks there was only 1 daytime custodian. He was a very helpful & professional worker but if a teacher didn't do their part to notify him of a problem, nothing was done for a day or more. When you bring this issue or any others up to the Principal, your words fall on deaf ears. It is in my opinion, & that of MANY others who also removed their students from this school, that the current Principal does not have enough experience to run a school. Or simply doesn't put many issues on her priority list. If this were her children's school, I am sure issues would be handled MUCH differently. We not only had to deal with bullying from other students but my child had to endure bully from the teacher as well. (Did u know that teachers in LAUSD get tenure after only 2 years?!) There were many conversations with the Principal as well. I went through the procedure for the bullying which was to get the form from the office, fill it out & return it to the office. But after a couple of weeks of not hearing anything I called the Superintendent's office to inquire. Much to my surprise I was told no compliant had been received. I was then given the fax number & asked to send it directly to his office. (SEVERAL of us parents got together & faxed the Super's office that week. Then & only then did we finally see some SMALL change.) The office staff was often rude, condescending & gossipy. The only good person they had ended up leaving, which says a lot in itself. The turnover in office staff was noticeable. In the last year my child attended I again informed the same Principal of some issues. Oddly, she then informed me that my child had a low grade in a subject there was never a problem in before. It seemed as though she back pedaled a lot during meetings with her parents & often tried to dodge the issues or make light of them instead of correcting these problems & serious concerns. If a child was not her favorite , you could quickly tell. Children that should have been recognized for their good & kind behavior went overlooked. Special talents went unnoticed also. In those 3 years my child only had 1 good teacher that made a difference. In our new school, we have not had 1 bad teacher, no issues of bullying, we are encouraged as parents to talk daily (if necessary) to ALL teachers involved in our child's education & my child has made the High Honor Roll not once, but 4x consecutively! (Even in the class I was told his grades had gone down in.) The field trips are plentiful, exciting & educational! Whereas you wait ALL year at Chandler for 1 lame trip that the children are as disappointed as the chaperones are. The music teacher that we did all that fundraising for was awful! She made children cry! The P.E. Staff was not much better. They blatantly disregarded medical orders as well as parental instruction. This school has potential, just not with it's current leader. To anyone reading these posts that are still going to send their child here, make sure you stay on top of what's going on DAILY! Watch for changes in your child's behavior & take their conversations about their day seriously. & keep the Superintendent's number on speed dial! read more

The principal is THE WORST. In my opinion doesn't seem to have the kids safety and peace of mind in mind, but rather how much money the school won't get if a kid who is violent with another kid misses a day of school. The administrators who are above her are not any better. No thank you. If you can put your kid at another school, that would be my advice! read more
