This was on my list for our Alaska cruise, and it definitely didn't disappoint! I had to restrain myself from buying everything in the store. I had made a list of quilt shops to visit at the ports we stopped at on our Alaskan journey. Thankfully my sister, also a quilter, was with me on the cruise and we left the husbands behind. We only had about an hour, maybe slightly more, to find the shop, look around and purchase something to remind us of our trip and get back to the ship. We accomplished what we set out to do. I wish we had had more time to look more closely at all they had to offer. The ladies in the shop that day were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. If I ever get back there, I'll be sure to stop in. read more

One of the pleasures of a trip, for me, is to visit a new quilt store. In fact the more quilt stores the better! I had searched quilt stores on YELP and this had not shown up. What? I am here to rectify that wrong. Our ship stopped in Juneau and we had a wonderful visit to Mendenhall Glacier, then lunch. I recommend you do these same things as well. What I don't recommend you then do is meander down the street, looking at this touristy t-shirt shop or that fudge joint. NO! We did that and it was a huge mistake. What we should have done is run down the street, or at least walk briskly for heaven's sake, to Changing Tides. We were taking our time and suddenly I spotted the promised land, a quilt store. I told my husband to sit and relax on the first floor, I was going to the second. He shouted after me, we only have 20 minutes. 20 minutes is all? I tried to see it all and make some decisions when I started getting texts from my hubby. I ignored them, of course. But I started grabbing stuff to buy and was just paying when he came up to drag me down. Something about not missing our ship, being stranded, I don't know. I wish I had had two more hours here. It's a spectacular quilt store. In the name of all that is holy, allow yourself at least an hour or you'll be sitting at home bitterly writing a review. Or wait, maybe that's me? read more

Changing Tides - Storefront on 2nd Floor - Fabric Stores Near Me - Juneau, Alaska

As I traveled north, I loved how the quilt stores seemed to get better with each city we stopped in. My biggest challenge in Changing Tides was restraining from purchasing too much, because there was SO MUCH temptation (and only so much space in my suitcase). Fat quarters, patterns, kits, handwork: embroidery, cross-stitch...sigh! My sewing teacher once told me that each quilt store is a reflection of the person who owns it. Looking around at this store, I can truly believe that, a) the owner of this store is my quilting soul-friend, and b) they truly love quilting and hand-work. Not only is there an amazing variety of things to purchase, but there are quilts all over the store... beautiful examples of what is being sold in the store. I always think that a great quilt store should be a combination of things to buy, and things to look at (almost like a art gallery-walk though) My goal, as I made my way through Alaska, was to only purchase patterns/fabric that were truly representative of my travels, and this store had that, and more. Picking something up, holding it close to my heart, only to find something else to love just a few steps away... now, to make a choice... oh, the travesty... why can't I just buy it all!!! I finally decided on two patterns and some fat quarters. Knowing that I can order on-line from them made parting just a little easier!! Whatever you do on your travels through Juneau, make sure you block out plenty of time to walk through this celebration of quilting... you won't be sorry (just a little lighter in the pocketbook!). read more

If you are a quilter, this is a must stop place. They pack a lot of wonderful into a small store. I was impressed with their huge selection of unique Alaskan themed batiks. They had many items I have not seen elsewhere. They also had a large selection of Alaskan wildlife printed panels and unique patterns. I went to 3 different quilt stores in the 3 ports our cruise stopped and this was by far the best. read more

I was an employee with Changing Tides for a few years. Out of all the jobs I have had, the employer--Jan--has been the best employer. Her base of knowledge in crafts and fabric is vast, but if she does not have the answer, she knows someone who does. She generally hires employees with some background and all of them enjoy working for her and enjoy sewing of some sort. Furthermore, she doesn't push people to buy things, she lets the customer fall in love with the creativity in the room and lets them choose what calls to them. But if someone needs an opinion or advice, she's there to help. She balanced professionalism and friendliness well, and taught me many skills that have become tools for me to succeed. One of my favorite things about this shop is that I learned where her fabric came from and it is higher quality (more durable, longer color duration, etc.) than many other lines of fabric. read more
