Came here as one of my friends sent me this special that they're running for 5 year anniversary. Didn't even know they've been here this long. It was lunch time and maybe 3 or 4 other tables, so we were quickly seated. The waitress was nice I think, but her tone of voice with her deep accent was very hard to understand. We got the basic bulgogi and wife and son got the galbi, all with soup. Overall, service was quick and efficient, but food taste was just average. The soup was and tofu was good, but it wasn't anything that stands out. Meat and banchan were good, but once again, it just seemed typical. All in all, it's probably 3.5 stars, but I'm giving it 3 as the value wasn't there. Yes, we got the specials which was a few dollars cheaper than their regular price, but the size or portion was all about 25% smaller than other Korean joints. Chanmaru is pretty average overall for a Korean restaurant, but not in a bad way. I have been here several times and the food is consistently decent for the price, which is really what keeps me coming back once in a while. The tofu soup is fine but nothing special. It tastes similar to most Korean spots in the area and does not really stand out. Where this place is more unique is the number of side dishes. They give you a lot more banchan than most places around Carrollton, which is fun if you like variety. That said, while there is a big selection of side dishes, the quality is kind of mid. Some of the more popular banchan are actually a bit below average compared to other Korean restaurants nearby. It looks impressive on the table but flavor wise it does not fully deliver. It was pretty empty when I went for lunch, but the wood interior aesthetic was nice and made the space feel warm and comfortable. Overall a decent place for Korean food. I'd really give it a 3.5 star. It's clean, service is prompt, and in a shopping center with lots of other food options and desserts. We ordered the intestine tofu soup and grilled mackerel combo. If you order a combo, the bowl for the tofu soup is slightly smaller than a standard order. The soup comes with white steamed rice in a special pot to eat that scorches a little on the bottom in which you add a little hot tea. They give lots of banchan, 9 total which is more than most places. The mackerel came out battered and fried which I wouldn't have ordered if I knew since it said "grilled", not fried. The tofu stew was a bit too salty. It does come with a nice amount of tofu. Other than taking our order and bringing out the food, no other contact with the server. Chanmaru really hit the spot after 2.5 hours of straight pickleball. I got the beef tofu soup combo with kalbi. The server was nice enough to let us know we should order first before this big group otherwise we might be waiting a while. I guess there's no questions about spice level? Mine could have used a little more kick, but the flavor was great. I love love love that there's so much banchan provided with this meal and they asked if we wanted refills here and there. When I come home for a visit I love to stop by. This is my 2nd visit. The staff are so sweet and friendly. It's great that they put the soondubu soup with a grilled meat. It makes it easier for you to order. I got galbi and seafood soup. The best part about coming here is they serve so many banchan varieties. I was served 14 wonderful banchan right after I ordered. I liked them all but their kimchi is so good! They bring an egg out so that you can crack it on top of your boiling soup that comes out. Everything was delicious. But still unhappy with the ahjumma (older lady) service. 4 of us , we ordered galbi $29 I think , soontofu $16 and tteokbokki $13, she saying we didn't order enough food. My kids are female , they don't eat much, they are 90 and 105 lbs. ahjumma said tteobokki didn't count bc it's appetizer. Ended up ordering extra bibimbap $16 just to please her. Ended up taking home the bubimbap and tteokbokki bc it's so much food. Didn't get banchan refill bc it's too much food. My kids barely touched the bibimbap and tteokbokki. I knew it was gonna be too much food right off the bat, that's why I just ordered galbi, tofu and tteokbokki. If the service was good, and no forcing us to buy more, we would have come back. Chanmaru was highly recommended to me as a quintessential Korean food spot. When we arrived, I was impressed by the array of banchan we had. We had the soondubu jjigae/galbi combo for $30, which sounds like a good deal, though they were slightly on the small side. The soondubu jjigae was rich and mildly spicy - overall delicious. The galbi cuts were thin but delicious and well-seasoned. I ordered the japchae, which was deliciously savory and had a good mix of meat/veggies in it. The staff here were accommodating - we were running late and cutting it close to when the kitchen closed, but they took our order over the phone and had it ready when we arrived! Unfortunately, I had an upset stomach shortly after eating here. I ate more of the japchae and certain banchan than my partner (who did not have such symptoms). Overpriced, inconsistent taste in food, and if you get their food to go then you get half of what they offer in restaurant with no discount. These guys have ok food on a good day. Some days the food is great and some days it is absolutely terrible. I thought it was because they were busy but it was not a busy day at all when we last visited. The food was just bad. Then on another day my mom and I decided to get some food to go and boy were we shocked. The to go container was super tiny compared to other equivalent places. They only gave us 1/3 of the side dishes (not even half), the rice was a different kind of rice (not cooked the same way as dine in), they did not include an egg with the soup, and even the service was bad .. and it was a to go order. How was the food bad? The soup was not flavorful but also VERY salty. It tasted like salt soup. When they tried to fix it they made it worse. It came back with a completely different color broth and even smelled different but not in a good way. It smelled gamey. The meat dishes we ordered were overcooked, dry, and more than half of the meat on the bone was fat - like huge chunks of fat. This last time I think I finally decided to stop giving these guys the benefit of the doubt. Just don't go here. Don't waste your time and money. I thought Chanmaru was just OK. I'm not sure if it's because my fiancé and I only ordered the soondubu & galbi combo to share, we were just treated a bit coldly (we didn't realize the portions were gonna be quite small for the price). We ended up ordering their 4pc mandu towards the end to feel more full (we didn't want to be too full since we live far and try to make the most of our Carrolton trip by getting desserts in the area). Also, while they do offer a lot of different banchans, they all tasted almost the same/bland. Food wasn't anything memorable. For the same price, I feel like the portion and flavor at BCD is better. The main reason why I wanted to try this place is because of their banchan but Dal Dong Nae, Sura and Seoul Garden offer tastier ones. They weren't busy by any means but no one stopped by to check in on us and when the bill was dropped off, the lady just placed it on the table without saying anything or looking at us. We weren't thanked even when we left. I mean.. I guess we're not obligated to a thank you but don't restaurants usually thank their customers? We weren't rude or needy so to be treated like that made us not want to go back there. 3 stars is on the higher side but it's because others talked highly of this place. And looking at other pictures, it seems they do offer better banchans depending on the day. Just because I didn't like it or had an OK experience, I hope it doesn't deter people from trying it. Chanmaru has become my favorite traditional Korean spot in town. Fairly new and away from the traffic of ktown, at least on my side. The food here is quality. Not overly pricey and good deals on combo sets. But I come here for the galbi tang (short rib soup). It's fantastic, filling and just tastes clean and delicious. But the tofu soups and meats are just as good. Another fave thing about this place are the wide array of sides they give you. Wish I could give 0 stars, stay far away from this horrible place!! My god I can't even remember the last time I had such a terrible dining experience. From the moment me my hubby and baby walked in we felt cold vibes. The older lady serving us was rude from the beginning, I could tell my hubby was irritated and I asked him 3x if he wanted to leave. We had already drove a distance to get here because I really wanted to try the raw spicy crab. The server KEPT on asking us if we were ready to order and my man didn't know what he wanted, she seemed to be mad that we weren't ready and was rolling her eyes huffing and puffing, MIND you we were the only people in the whole restaurant.......... The server seemed upset in general that we were even dining here and now I wish I went with my first gut instinct to just leave, there are plenty of other restaurants that would love our business. A few other table started to arrive while we were deciding what to order and we both noticed that they were being brought a bunch of appetizers to there table. We were never brought anything............ I had to look on Yelp and see that the banchan was complimentary and asked another server for them. Thats ridiculous, it's like we were being judged the moment we walked in and had we not asked about the appetizers we never would've received them. The food was actually disgusting. Everything from the apps to the main dishes were horrible. The spicy raw crab was ok, however the bulgogi ribs were bad and cold. The soup was cold and gross. And to top it all off we were charged more than what was priced on the menu. The raw crab was supposed to be $29.99 and I was charged $32.99 the other entire was an extra 2 dollars as well. They purposely charged us more. When I asked another server said it was "a combo". I was NOT in the mood to argue with these people so we just took the extra charge out of there tip. My go-to is either the perilla mushroom soontofu or the clam one. Both are nice & light, which offsets the meaty galbi dish. Side dishes are plentiful. The five of us had a great lunch here. We were given a table in one of the "private" sections which was perfect for our group. One person ordered the galbitang, which he said was really good. Others ordered the soondubu "tofu" soups, two of them as combo sets. The soups were nicely seasoned and very flavorful. The rice, served in heated stainless bowls, was cooked perfectly. The selections for the combo sets were the sauteed spicy squid and pork galbi. Both were excellent, especially the pork, which had a subtle seasoning but was grilled nicely and very tasty. The banchan variety was the best I've seen in any Korean restaurants in the area. There were traditional cabbage and radish kimchi as well as many others made of fresh vegetables, fishcake, and seaweed. Our table was filled with delicious banchan dishes. The staff was truly impressive. As busy as they were, they did not miss a beat. They checked on us frequently and were friendly and accommodating. Prices were very reasonable and the food quality, as well as the portion sizes, were excellent. The restaurant is located in a newer shopping plaza, largely occupied so far by Korean restaurants and stores, most notably the new Korean grocery store, Fresh K International. What a gem! Chanmaru is our go-to place for tofu sundubu. If you're unfamiliar with the area, you can easily miss it! Chanmaru is in a shopping area behind Starbucks. You can also find other Korean restaurants, a hair salon, bakeries, and ice cream spots. There's ample parking, if you can't find one in front of the restaurant, there's more available a little ways down. When we walked inside, we were immediately greeted and seated. The restaurant is bright, clean, and comfortable. Since we knew what we wanted, we didn't waste any time. You have an option for mild, regular, or extra spicy. If you haven't noticed from my previous posts, I like mild. The vegetable sides are a must try! They gave about 12 sides - all were well seasoned. The sundubu was tastey and enjoyable. I highly recommend it especially on a cold day or clear your sinuses. We have sundubu where I grew up, but this is very authentic. The other food on the menu looks very tasty as well - kalbi, kimchi pancake. YUM! Like many Korean restaurants, they serve soju. We will be returning soon! read more

There were bites of squid in the soup and some clams to enjoy as well. LA Galbi: 4.5/5 Serving was a little smaller than expected but the flavor was on point. The meat was tender and slid right off the bone. Daeji Galbi: 4.5/5 I don't even like pork but this flavor was so addicting. There was a great smokiness that enhances the rich flavor of the pork. The food and atmosphere here is phenomenal. The interior of it is bright and they actually have small closed off areas if you wanted a private place to eat your group. SUMMARY: We had a near 5 star experience here. Food was good to excellent, service was on point, and atmosphere was clean and cozy. We even ran into our friend here we haven't seen in 6 month! During my visit, I got the Meat soontofu. The soup had a wonderful spice to it. The meat within the soup was slender cuts of beef that were also delicious. The tofu was leaning more towards being soft which was easy to eat. All the soontofus come with a container of rice. The bottom of the rice was crispy which added an additional texture to my dish. The meal was also accompanied by several small dishes of appetizers that ranged from bean sprouts to kimchi. They have a large variety of side dishes. I've visited Chanmaru several times since I live nearby, and I've always enjoyed their food. I'm moving away from Dallas soon and had to stop in one last time! An obvious highlight of dining at Chanmaru is the extensive banchan spread. All of the sides are very fresh and tasty, especially the kimchi. The menu also features a wide array of classic Korean dishes as well as several variants of soondubu, so it's certain there will be something for everyone. The soondubu always is bubbling and warms you up with both its spice and temperature. The kimchi pancake is also very crispy and flavorful.
